Duck Egg Roll
Napa and bean sprouts with a hoisin dipping sauce.
Batter fried chicken with onions, carrots, and snow peas in our homemade Szechuan Sauce.
Great for sharing. Shrimp or minced quail, mixed with vegetables on rice noodles.
I have never had a bad meal there!! Always a pleasure to go.
always consistent. Friendly staff always attentive. Owner accessible and collegiate .Recommend as local and fine night out establishment,
This was our second trip this month; prior to this we had never eaten here, so that says a lot! Food is great! Last time I had one of the more expensive dishes with scallops and shrimp and it was worth it! It was full of both and not just veggies. This time I was undecided until I saw a tray with another tables food and it looked yummy. The told me it was Nu Chicken. I asked about the veggies as I don't like peppers, they let me chose mine:) Lightly fried, not heavy, chicken was not chewy and gross.
Spring rolls are terrific!
As far as "social distancing" the are doing a great job!
The only thing I can even say as slightly negative as there are so many people waiting on us that they weren't communicating. So we had to ask for a drink 2x, but no big deal.
I would certainly recommend.
Excellent hot and sour soup!!! Nice menu and great service!!!
The owner Matthew does a great job, where the food is good and consistent. Drinks are great and glad this restaurant is still going strong.
We first went to China Gourmet back in the 80's. We have been infrequent guests over the many years since then. I must admit that the food was even better than I remembered. It was flavorful and the portions were very large. The only negative was the short walk in the rain necessary because of the resurfacing of the lower parking lot! I guess that's a really stupid thing to complain about. As you can, I hope, tell, it was a very pleasant experience over-all.
Delicious as always. Service a little off-kilter due to COVID, but attentive. I hadn’t been in for a while, but we’ll be going back more often. Best Chinese in Cincinnati.
Lived in Cincinnati pretty much my whole life. I have no idea how we missed this place until now! We went right when things were opening after Covid. The took every precaution and it didn't feel awkward. I was impressed with the service. The food is worth every penny and they do not skimp. Mixed drinks are good too:) Will definitely return .
It has been over a year since I have been here. We were seated immediately upon our arrival and didn’t see any wait staff for 20 minutes. I finally got up and returned to the reception desk to get our drink order taken. After that our wait staff was more attentive. I was seated on a banquette seat which had no foam or spring left in it. Also the vinyl was roughed up and looked sad.
All of that said, the food was very good and exactly as I had remembered it. We had the pot sticker appetizer and split an order of China Gourmet stir fry. The wine list here is good. Overall a good experience but a little refreshing of decor and the wait staff might be in order.
Have eating many times at CG over the years - always excellent. Not your traditional Cincinnati Chinese restaurant; better. I strongly recommend the steamed whole fish; can't get such a tender morsel anywhere else in town. The wine list under Matthew has been improved with a few better selections for those who want something a bit better than the usual low end fare.
The food is delicious ! The fish is always great. I took two friends with us that haven’t eaten here before .
One is on WW and they were thrilled with the food , menu and wait staffs knowledge !
Outstanding. Best Chinese restaurant I’ve city.
Hostess was no where to be found for 10 minutes as the line formed upfront, and questions started to pour out by other customers awaiting direction as to where to stand mixed with takeout orders. Waiters/waitresses attempted to not make contact with us when cashing out customers who had paid, and when the hostess finally showed up as clearly not happy to be there that evening. The waitress we had took our drink orders about 30 minutes in, then a manager I believe delivered the drinks and the waitress came back about another 30 minutes for our order, which we didn’t get for over an hour as tables that sat after us had their food and were on their way out already for the evening.
Valentines date. Service wasn’t bad but very slow. Must have been short handed. The table next to us left without receiving their entrees.
Absolutely wonderful. I went there with my mom on Valentine’s Day. They gave us both red roses and there was a piano player playing. There were a few different servers that took care of us, and one of them was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave us great recommendations. Definitely an awesome experience!
It may not be fair that I just came back from 4 nights in San Francisco, but this was some of the most mediocre Chinese food I have experienced in years. It is no wonder that there was not a single Asian anywhere in sight, including the staff.
We had potstickers that were overly firm and I could not tell the pork from the shrimp. You can do better in Costco’s frozen food section. The lo mein was really Shanghai noodles and again completely tasteless. The salmon had a thick, heavy, black bean sauce on it, and that was definitely the best item we had. The crispy duck was not only not crispy, it was covered in an overly salty duck sauce. We gave up trying to cut it with a knife and just left it there. Maybe we should have asked for a steak knife or a sword.
Sure, it could have been just an off night for the kitchen, but I am more likely to believe that the large number of people in SW Ohio that have given this place rave reviews have just never eaten even good, much less outstanding, Chinese fare. Again, I direct you to Costco’s frozen food section for a much better example of Chinese food.
I did not quite get out of the restaurant before I needed a trip to the restroom. Can you say mono sodium glutamate!
Great place for a great dinner and the ability to have a quiet conversation. A go to restaurant for good comfort Chineses food. Don't miss their steamed walleye or green beans.
We chose to go the China Gourmet because if was the night before the start of the Chinese New Year and they had a special menu for the occasion. Unfortunately, several employees cancelled that evening, so from 5:30 to 6:30, nothing went right.
When our party of 3 arrived at 5:30, the restaurant was empty. We ordered from the New Year Menu - 6 pan fried dumplings and 6 curry and lobster dumplings, 2 spring rolls and hot sake and cranberry juice. The drinks arrived, immediately.
Around 6:30, it was starting to get crowded, and we had not yet received our appetizers, so, we decided to place the rest of our order: steamed rainbow trout with rice; 1/2 order of spinach and 1/2 order of string beans; and one wonton soup. Shortly, thereafter, we received the two spring rolls' the order of dumplings never did arrived.
By 7:00 there were at least 100 people in the restaurant and there was a line out the door. We asked about the dumplings and was told the order for them must have gotten lost because the kitchen had not made any for us. Then our entree order arrived; and each item was either lukewarm or cold .
The shortage of staff was resolved when additional staff were finally called in to help.
One member of our party is a longtime customer of China Gourmet and started going to the restaurant when it first opened in 1977. She refused to eat the food and sent it back to the kitchen to be reheated.
The fish entree did include, however, 4 fried dumplings at no charge to compensate us for the mix-up on our dumpling orders.
Around 7:45, we ordered tea and almond cookies and one carrot cake; all of which was perfect.
When we left around 8:10, there were several hundred people, possibly 300 people, in the restaurant. I gave what for me was a generous tip, because the staff worked extremely hard to make sure that everyone was properly served.
I look forward to returning to the China Gourmet on a less busy night and will bring a friend.
While the taste of the food, which was ordered from the holiday specials (lunar new year), was good, the food was lukewarm in temperature. So was the hot sake. Our reservation was for 5:15 p.m. and the restaurant was not crowded, but service was slow, inadequate, and seemingly untrained, as they were unable to explain the various menu items. The poor service continued through the conclusion of our meal. We do not anticipate returning.
Always wonderful. Love the steamed trout!
Just not like I remember at all - the food was very bland -- wont be going back any time soon
Always the best fish in town!!!
Service a bit slow but everything else was great
Tasty food ,excellent service ,and nice ambience .What more can one ask.My favorite place in area to eat Trout.
First of all they didn't seem ready for us, though I had called twice that afternoon to let them know that we would have 10, then 9 instead of 12. They had designated the make-shift round table for us, which would have been nice for conversation. However, it wobbled so much that the water placed on our table nearly spilled. At our insistence we moved to another table.
Though the food was nicely presented and delicious, the server never came back to make sure everything was fine. Drinks and water went dry before someone came to check. One person's beef medallions were tough to chew. He didn't get a chance to tell someone until almost everyone was nearly finished eating.
Though our bill was $311 and I gave a tip of $50, my evaluation of the service would have been much less.
Always excellent food and service. A gem.
We went on a night where they were greatly understaffed. Everyone working there was trying their best, but it was a complete cluster! The owner should have been there to see and to appreciate how hard his staff worked in a situation that was out of control.
Great food and service. Dimly lit upscale atmosphere. Will definitely return.
China Gourmet has been a favorite for many years. We moved away about 11 years ago and at this return visit found everything as delicious as when we ieft!
Love this place. The rainbow trout with ginger and scallions is incredible. I get it every time.
Matthew continues to provide a wonderfully warm and comfortable venue, with friendly, well-trained staff, at an exceptional value. Excellent bar tending as well!
This is one of favorite, go-to restaurants. The food, the service, the ownership, and staff are second to none. Just waiting for our next visit.
Always wonderful. The walleye was steamed to perfection. And the veggies were a great accompaniment.
Always good service and good food.
