What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.5

Jose Andres’ new place isn’t quite up to the level of his other spots, but it’s a fun time for Peruvian, Japanese, and Chinese fusion.

Ratings 7.0-7.5:These are your neighborhood standbys - the places that you’ll happily hit for some pasta or a quick salad, but not a restaurant you are bringing your parents or (god forbid) a date to. The true embodiment of good but not great.

Good selection and lives up to its name of fusion. Plates and prices were good value .... loved the dim sum soup dumplings. A little loud but a large restaurant with lots of patrons. Service was good. It’s not high end restaurant so didn’t expect the “ambience” but restaurant was set up well and met What I expected.

Most dishes are small plate tapas-style. We enjoyed being able to taste each dish. There was plenty for both of us to have 2 servings of each of the 4 tapas we ordered. We really enjoyed the Peruvian cancha (like corn nuts but lighter and not as hard). It brought me back to Peru. The menu is vegetarian friendly and there are plenty of options for fish, meat, and chicken lovers.

Really nice experience to try the fusion dishes. Please turn on some air conditioning though. It was super hot in there and made it somewhat uncomfortable.

Food was surprisingly good with an interesting combo between Peruvian and Chinese. Way too noisy (Friday evening, so understandable); the $55 tasting menu had plenty of food samples from each section of the menu (11 plus 2 deserts). One thing to note is not everyone gets their own dish - it’s family style so presumably they gave us the shareable portion for 4. Ceviche classico was delish, shrimp in butternut squash was a good combo, yucca fries very good but the fried wontons and shu mai were underwhelming. We’d come back for individual dishes but not the tasting menu a second time.

Great food and a great value. The restaurant is noisy, so consider that if you are planning a business dinner or other occasion where lower noise levels may be desired.

We enjoyed our meal but for $50 per person not including drinks it was a bit of a splurge for the amount of food we got. Better to come with a large group so you can sample many different dishes.

Amazing dinner at one of my favorite places! Tried the Chilcano dish - $55 per person for a sampling of the best on the menu. It was amazing - food just kept coming and coming! Had some of my favorites included, but also found some new favorites. Highly recommend this as an option, whether it is your first visit or you twenty-first visit!

Food was excellent, but our shared entree arrived extremely late (easily 30 minutes after we finished our appetizers). We had to check with the server several times and we were assured that it was on its way.

The service and decor is good. The food is a whole other story. Besides being a bit overpriced, which you don’t mind if the food is really good, but that was not the case. The worse dish we had was a chicken stew. It was horrible. It’s also served with a portion of rice that couldn’t even feed a child.

A birthday dinner gone wrong...

We’ve been to other Jose Andres restaurants and have always had a great experience; we wish we could say the same for our dinner here. The food was good but the service left much to be desired. It took 10 minutes for our server to greet us, and another 10 for her to bring the bottle of wine we ordered to the table. She took the bottle from the table and we were left waiting and having to ask to refill our glasses multiple times throughout the meal. She was not welcoming or friendly and made us feel that we were a chore for her.

We wanted to enjoy our time here so badly, but the service distracted us from our meal and our time together. For the price of this meal you can get as good of a menu and much better service at many other restaurants in DC.

Fabulous food and service! This place did not miss a beat. We took the recommendations of our server and enjoyed everything - he even chose our wine and it was a perfect match with the food. We plan to come here again and again for the unique and fresh flavors and friendly staff.

Dinner with four old friends - ultra foodies - was a joy at this lively, innovative spot in Penn Quarter. The blended Peruvian/Chinese/Japanese cuisine - dim sum, sushi, Latin favorites - is surprising & satisfying. Try the cilantro dumplings, the lomo saltado, the creamy chicken stew. Fabulous cocktails (Pisco sour a must) and desserts, thoughtful server recommendations, and reasonable prices are a win-win-win!
