If it was allowed. we would give China Chilcano 6 stars -- and this is based on having dined there at least 10 times. Every dish impresses, from the wild catfish mini sandwich, to the yucca fries, to the crisp cookie dessert. The range of Peruvian/Asian choices is truly remarkable and each is maxed in flavor! The wine list is also cleverly matched to the menu categories, etc. Servers know their stuff and are happy to explain any and all dishes. China Chilcano is a gem in the truest sense of the word.

I’ve eaten here many times but this time my friend and I decided to do the tasting menu. It was a major disappointment.

Delicious food. So creative. We were visiting for the weekend and a group went for dinner Saturday evening. Some of us decided to go back for lunch on Sunday. Every dish the table got was delicious. The only negative was the noise Saturday evening, making conversation difficult but Sunday was fine - less crowded so less noisy. Maybe some noise reducing cloth hanging from the ceiling? But we’d all still go back on a Saturday night!

Overall, a very nice experience. I would rate both Jaleo and Oyamel as having superior food. There's nothing wrong with China Chilcano and I would go there again. We had the tasting menu for two and thought some of the items were exceptional. Others, e.g., the lomo saltado, were just OK. The restaurant does get a bit noisy and intense.

Such a great dining experience with the tasting menu! Great value for trying 9 different plates plus dessert. The food was top notch quality.

food made two of our party very ill, managers were very unkind, staff was in and out and we were there for a bday and they never acknowledged it. It was truly a cool atmosphere but the worse service and treatment we have ever experienced. Sadly we would not go back.

Great tasting menu. By all means start with a Pisco sour, though the alcohol menu has a lot to enjoy. Tuna at every opportunity.

I am Peruvian and I have eaten Peruvian food all over the US. I was excited to try this restaurant in Washington DC. I only give a three star because the food was ok but not what I was expecting. The Lomo Saltado that I ordered was way too greasy for my taste. The French fries were soaked in the Lomo sauce making it very soft to eat and the meat was way too chunky and very chewy. Not worth the money. Also I think I make better Pisco Sours at home.

Wonderful food, lovely very helpful attentive service. Love the decor and had a nice table by the widow. A little on the noisy side.

First time dining other than happy hours. Most of the group opted for more traditional lunch options. All of the food was good. Sandwich options were priced at $11 reasonable for sit down service. However service was below par. Given that the place was far from busy the waiter had no reason for his in attentiveness. Chatting at the bar is ok if you face your tables and keep a eye. Not the case here, food arrived but we had to work hard to get his attention to request ketchup and a fork.

That aside, great option for a lunch with conversation and good food.

Scrumptious food! Couples date and we all loved the plethora of flavors in the food. We were tasting each other’s dishes and loving it. The drinks were great too. That frothy margarita was so good! We really enjoyed seeing the other dishes that people had. So we’ll be back to try other foods. Thanks for a great couples night out.

Really great food. Service was excellent. I think you need to order a bit more food than one would think. The tapas plates are small.

Food was amazing. Ordered several items, favorites were soup dumplings (bao), lotus bun, dancing yucca and concolon. Ate family style. Everything was so delicious. Atmosphere was fun, good music, wonderful service. Wish we could have tried everything.

Noise level made it difficult to have a conversation. Many people, loud music and hard surfaces all contributed. We felt the loud music was a distraction that made everyone’s volume increase. Food was excellent.

I had a reservation for 6, unfortunately two of my friends could not come and since I "downsized" my group in the words of the hostess, they could not give us the table because it was "to big for us". We were standing at the door for about 40 minutes, and the table was empty anyways, the hostess seemed very annoyed and with attitude and did not care at all. I do understand that is not the same consumption level but 1. a good attitude goes a long way, and 2. there was an empty table anyways so we could have eaten and left faster. While we wait, someone else kept complaining about a weird smell, it was really loud and the server was trying to be nice but we couldn't really hear him well. We only stayed because our friend was visiting and we wanted to take him to a Jose Andrés Resturant, and by that time if we went to another restaurant we would have to wait too (which is what you want to avoid by making a reservation on the first place)

I think that the staff was extremely kind and helpful. When I first walked in I was greeted with a smile. The presentation of some plates was not at the quality I hoped for but tasted wonderful. Thank you so much!

Although I am a huge fan of all of Jose's other restaurants, I'll admit I was a little confused about China Chilcano so I hadn't visited until the crazy Nationals Parade Day. I was not skeptical of the fusion concept in general, I just couldn't get a solid vibe from the eclectic menu. That said, I'm so glad I finally gave it a try. Jose never disappoints. Phenomenal food, drinks and vibe as usual. We tried two noodle dishes -- Tam Tam and Aeropuerto as well as the squash dumplings. All fantastic. Can't wait to go back to try more!! And we did after parade drinks at Oyamel. Both Jose joints had great service despite the busy crowds!!

Most dishes were underseasoned. The food was amazing the previous time we went, but was very disappointing this time. Dining experiences were only a few weeks apart, but drastically different. Great drinks though.

Tried this for my first time. Did the fixed price 3 course lunch. There's something unique for the discerning pallet. The yucca fries with moving Benito wafers was delectable and entertaining. The chicken stew was presented in an attractive display and each bite was a new experience. Portions were perfect. Ended with the pineapple sorbet and the Peruvian specialty desserts; a great way to end the meal. Kudos to the chefs!

In the past China Chilcano was not my favorite. I'm so glad I sent back, it was really wonderful. Leave it to Jose' Andres to keep improving and creating! Highly recommend.
