What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.5

Jose Andres’ new place isn’t quite up to the level of his other spots, but it’s a fun time for Peruvian, Japanese, and Chinese fusion.

Ratings 7.0-7.5:These are your neighborhood standbys - the places that you’ll happily hit for some pasta or a quick salad, but not a restaurant you are bringing your parents or (god forbid) a date to. The true embodiment of good but not great.

The lunch menu is actually better than the dinner menu. I’ve been here for lunch many, many times, but this was my first time for dinner. Lunch is a much better value, both food- and price-wise.

This was our first time at China Chilcano. The menu is a little confusing, but our server explained the fun options to create our meal. We had 4 small plates - Cerviche Classico, cilantro dumplings, cauliflower chifa, baby boy choy. All were delicious with nice presentations. The atmosphere is pretty and comfortable with pretty colors and pillows all around and the noise level was easy for conversation. We'll definitely be back to try more menu options!

This is the place for a pre-game (Capital One Arena) or pre-theatre meal. Food choices designed for sharing with partner or group. Fun variety of choices so wide range of diets can be accommodated. Nice variety of cocktails and wines compliment the food menu. Order a few dishes, eat, talk and then order more as needed. Staff is knowledgeable about menu and can recommend so you are not overwhelmed by all the choices. They keep water glasses filled and check back often so that empty plates removed as new dishes arrive.

My boyfriend and I went to dinner at China Chilcano for a small celebration. We were intrigued by the menu although a bit apprehensive (we do enjoy all types of food and food cultures), but this menu seemed a unique blend. We were not disappointed! We decided to try several things to share- the dumplings with chili oil were so good we asked for a second order! We also enjoyed the cauliflower dish and the beef Lomo Saltado; so tender and flavorful. We even splurged on dessert! The pisco sours were not at strong as we would have liked, but very refreshing. We shared a bottle of wine from Peru- akin to a Merlot.

Our waiter was superb- gracious and knowledgeable- explained all the dishes and ingredients. Efficient without being overbearing. I regretfully did not get his name.

We will definitely return to China Chilcano.

4 of us ordered 8 small plates for sharing. All were fabulous. Interesting combinations of flavors and everything cooked perfectly. Servers nicely paced delivery of various dishes. We were a few minutes late for our 6:15 reservation on a Saturday. We’re seated within 5 or 10 minutes.

Went to celebrate a birthday for an adventurous 13 year old. The food was great as always - love their modern approach to chifa. The waiter sent over a lovely mocktail for the birthday boy. He loved the experience. This is a great choice for a slightly "nicer" dinner with well behaved kids. It's vibrant and funky while still offering some more familiar tastes (dumplings/shumai/fried rice) for pickier kids.

While the food was mostly delicious, the service was very poor. Our waiter was rude and impersonal, and barely showed any people skills. He clearly was busy during this New Years Day lunch, but he did not make a good impression on our table.
I would come back because the food is mostly delicious, but I was very disappointed by the service especially for the price.

Good food, great service, lovely place...had a great time. There were 3 of us celebrating a birthday (2 in Dec., 1 in Jan., so we do 1 brunch together on New Year's day) and we got a candle on dessert! We'd all actually forgotten that I'd mentioned that in the reservation, so that was a nice treat.

The menus are extensive, so took us quite awhile to peruse them and figure out what we wanted. The waiter ended up coming back several times, but was very patient and made suggestions that we followed. Fortunately, being New Year's day, the place wasn't crowded. We got lots of personal, friendly service and had a great selection of delicious food--one chose from the 3-course lunch menu, others ordered appetizers and another main course.

We had a light lunch, sharing items between the two of us. The dim sum was delightful and delicious. The salmon sashimi was luscious. — fresh, beautiful, melt-in-mouth ono.

Service was unobtrusively solicitous and we were allowed to feel comfortable lingering a little over coffee.

We love Peruvian food, so we were excited to try this. I want to start by saying José Andrés deserves sainthood for his work after Hurricane Maria in PR, so I want to just sing his praises. But I'll be honest that the experience at China Chilcana was uneven. The ceviche clasico was one of the best I've ever had and I definitely slurped every drop of the leche de Tigre from the bowl. The causa with crab was delicious-- we ordered a second helping. The other things we ordered we not as great. The papas a la huacaina were off in terms of ratio of sauce to potatoes. The potatoes were so minimal and thinly sliced, they were almost imperceptible in the massive sea of sauce. The sauce was good, but not so good to override the need for potatoes. The beef (lomo saltado) sent us into a major MSG coma, and was very light on beef, heavy on spring onions. The arroz a la Cubana aka Cusco fried rice (?) was the most disappointing. It could have been delicious, but it was basically plain white rice and cucumbers with a sprinkle of plantains on top. Seemed to be missing flavor or sauce or some kind. It fell flat. All in all, the meal was pricy for 4 people and not fully satisfying.

If your tastebuds are seeking new experiences, this is the place. The combination of Chinese, Peruvian, and Japanese flavors are stunning. We enjoyed the cilantro freshly made dumplings, Asian-style tuna ceviche, and a delicious cookie roll dessert. All were extremely flavorful and had us hungering for more. The cocktail menu and wine list is delightful with more than enough choices--try the Ma Collins if you're a bourbon drinker and any of the Pisco Sours--especially the spicy one--if you dare. Now about that yellow neon...
