What Insiders Are Saying
Jose Andres’ new place isn’t quite up to the level of his other spots, but it’s a fun time for Peruvian, Japanese, and Chinese fusion.
The food was nouveau and exciting. The service was excellent and my friend and I enjoyed it immensely.
We were celebrating the birthday of my daughter. Ordered the experience menu. We were served the courses so fast that we ended up with all of them on the table, with no time to enjoy them.
We also ordered a pisco and a margarita and neither of them had much taste; looked like sodas. We have very much enjoyed all other Jose Andres’ in D.C. and, despite the pricy tag, this one doesn’t definitely live up to the quality of Jose Andres’ restaurants.
Was a fun delicious experience! Also glad to eat from a chef who does so much for the community.
Interesting menu with lots of choice between creative and unique dishes. Our waiter was excellent. We ordered the tasting menu and would have appreciated it if the waiters who delivered each course had provided a clearer description of each dish. Cool room with a nice vibe. Very loud.
Food was superb, and the staff was extremely attentive and respectful. This remains one of my favorite restaurants in DC.
We LOVED the culture of this place! The atmosphere was very cool. We got the Sampler with drink pairings, and everything was perfect! Ended up being a bit pricey for us, but well worth the amount!! I will definitely return with friends!
The restaurant is beautiful and comfortable. Staff all make you feel happy to be there. Our server, Luis, was super helpful and seemed genuinely happy that we enjoyed the food he recommended. The food was DELICIOUS and beautifully presented - and priced reasonably. Of course, we love and support Jose Andres, his restaurants and all his good works. An altogether happy dining experience!
Great vibe and setup. Wonderful, friendly service from Angel and delicious food. Definitely recommend.
We shared a few small things plates including Dim Sum and Lomo Saltado. Delicious all around! It was busy but staff were very attentive and helpful.
Great service and food, bright interior. We had early reservations, so enjoyed our conversation. But by the time we left, noise rose to a roar and we would not have enjoyed our dinner then.
All around great experience, 10 out of 10!
Friend in town
This was my second time at China Chilcano. First time was nice - great lunch meal that was reasonably priced. Valentine's Day was an absolute rip off. I wasn't enticed to drain $69 bucks per person on the Valentine's Day menu, so i opted for the alternative menu, and, let me tell you, all the options sucked. Absolute worst meal for close to $80.
The atmosphere is cool, and the drinks we ordered were good. My suggestion - skip the meal in favor of the bar and it's offerings.
Their food was excellent. The service, not so good. We ordered the four-level tasting special, telling the waiter that we needed to be out for a play in 1 1/2 hours. He said "no problem." However, we barely made it to the theater. Some courses came quickly, at other times we sat for 20 minutes waiting. At the very end, there was a mad dash to get us served before we had to leave. Not a pleasant dining experience. They could/should have done better. But, I will give them credit on the quality of their food.
My boyfriend and I went to China Chilcano for Valentine's day and loved it! We did not choose to do the special Valentine's menu, but for $65 it did seem like a worthwhile option. The octopus ceviche is a must, and we enjoyed all of the plates we ordered!
Good intro by the waiter. Unfitting, No traditional ceviche when we ate lunch at noon.
we loved the food, it's a bit informal for its price range but the concept is amazing.
Last time here 3 years ago all 5 stars plus.
This time 3 stars , would have prefer to go to Olive Garden. Had the 55$ tasting (should either charge more or reduce dishes for more quality) around 6pm so not busy , no excuses
-Shu Mai with quail egg (warm at best, egg over cooked)
-Felt like 85% of meal was Carbohydrates heavy
-Shrimp smelled like it had been defrosted 2 days earlier
-Ceviche best dish
-fried rice presentation has fallen, but flavor was perfect with wok flavor
-whatever the number of course (so unremarkable, I cant even remember number) never given new plates, was fighting to find a clean zone
-younger Hispanic guy that brought 1/3 of dish...spent 4 secs to tell us about dish “here this is shrimp”, “this is ceviche “ (we ask what kind of fish) “it’s fish of the day”
-Pisco Sour egg white foam was shaken so long, they were hard peaks, thick enough to shave with , not drink
I have been to 5 of Jose Andrés restaurants across US , this management team and chef de cuisine should be fired. Poor representation of the brand
Been there twice with groups of 6-7: service is always excellent, food extraordinary. Would go back over and over. Definitely order fruits of the amazon for dessert!
Delicious food but they were out of some items.
Had dinner here the other night. There were 4 of us and we had multiple dishes. Liked all of them. This is a tapas format and the dish portions were perfect for 4. The restaurant was a bit noisy but not so loud that we could not hear each other.
I don’t know where you guys got the 4.5 stars on Yelp. Food was so bland and unseasoned - sure, just throw piles of red onion onto everything. None of the dishes had any actual prep /work into it. Will not return or recommend ever to anyone.
We've been to China Chilcano several times and usually take friends. The food is always good and so is the ambiance. Most recent visit was a Saturday night at 7pm, which is the worst time to dine in DC because it's the most crowded and noisy.
The noise was unbearable. We had to literally yell to friends across the table of 6. Never again on a Saturday night. We're return, but we'll eat early.
Such a fun place -- fusion food, tapas sized portions, and wait staff ready, willing, and able to make great suggestions! Graciously accommodated a shellfish allergy to ensure no cross contamination.
Great service - outstanding food and drink. A wonderful experience.
Was a recommendation from my son-in-law, and I will say that this place tops most other places. Such amazing amazing tastes. I will be back!!!
Outstanding food, service, atmosphere. I highly recommend China Chilcano - we were well taken care of!
The food was amazing
China Chilcano is always excellent. The menu is creative & delicious with a lot of interesting variety. The service was efficient, responsive, & courteous. And the three course $20 lunch specials can’t be beat. Best part is supporting Chef José Andres. His humanitarian work is an inspiration.
Food was delicious and tasty, my only thought it they are tapas-sized plates for the most part (minus the dancing yuca which is plentiful) and it's a bit overpriced per plate. Will we go there again? Absolutely, but my husband leaves hungry and needs a snack when he gets home after we've spent about $80.
We went to China Chilcano for a pre-theatre dinner. We ended up sitting at the bar for happy hour and then just stayed put for dinner. The two bartenders were very personable and engaging. It was a very nice experience and a delicious meal.
Service was attentive and friendly. The ceviche was stellar! I highly recommend this restaurant for an excellent meal.
Food was not well seasoned. Disappointed. Like other Jose Andres restaurants, but this was a miss.
My son and I went to celebrate his 22nd birthday. Food was creative and tasty. Modern decor. The server was excellent in explaining the menu, but fell short in serving my son one of his small plates first, then after a 10 minute plus wait serving me all three of my small plates, and another five minutes later serving him his second and third small plate. Seating is close to cram large number of diners into the restaurant and, as a result, the restaurant was very noisy.
China Chilcano has a short menu, but everything I've eaten there has been delicious, well prepared, and true to the Peruvian-Asian fusion cuisine of Lima. My favorites are the ceviche (delicately seasoned with not too much citrus) and the Dim Sum (melt in your mouth pleasures.) Most of all, the bar serves an authentic Peruvian Pisco sour that offers the pleasing combination of Pisco (grape brandy) and lemon, topped by lightly whipped egg white and bitters.
Not good at all
Took my adult sons and his friends out for a lunch after not seeing them for a couple of years. The food was interesting and tasty. Portion sizes are small even for small plates but this is probably a DC restaurant hazard. Our server did a great job explaining the items to us and letting us know in advance about the portion sizes but I was still a touch surprised. We could have ordered more but my budget wouldn't allow it. What was perfect, though, (and I don't know if this was just serendipity or the plan on the part of our server) was most dishes had a bit for each of us (there were 6 in our party). Would go again, though, lovely experience.
After the way Jose Andres stepped up to support federal workers affected by the government shutdown, I'm all about supporting him and his restaurants. Especially when the food is delicious and the atmosphere is delightful. I went to China Chilcano for the first time last weekend with seven friends. I reserved a table in advance and we had a great spot nestled in a corner with plenty of room for everyone and a giant lazy Susan in the middle of the table. We ordered a ton of food, sharing everything. So, for the most part I didn't always know what I was eating, but I know everything I tasted was delicious. The pork buns and the chicken siu mai were my favorite, but there wasn't a bad plate all night. The only hard part was keeping track of what we were spending. The bites are so small, so we just kept ordering more. At the end of the night I was completely satisfied with the quality of the food, the service, and the atmosphere, so I didn't mind spending a lot on the experience. But, do be prepared to spend more than you would at some of his other restaurants (Jaleo, Oyamel).
One of the best places to eat in Penn Quarter.
