I went to Chico Malo on a Saturday evening and was seated right away (I did have reservations). The food was good to very good. The Chili Colorado and Elote were both very good. The Carne Asada was ok. The service was not great -- we were never asked if we wanted another drink and it took quite a while to get our check. We ended up going to another place for drinks. I would recommend Chico Malo because it's in a nice bustling area of downtown on the weekend and nice to walk around and see other places as well.
Hi ChicagoEater. Thank you for choosing Chico Malo for dinner. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the Colorado and Elote. They're two of our more popular dishes. Could you go into more detail about the Asada? What would you have liked changed? I want to apologize for the long time for the lapse in service. We want all guests to feel taken care of - and it sounds like weren't able to accomplish that. We do hope you visit us again for a proper Chico Malo experience. Thor Nguyen GM
We were in town for a Getaway. Decided to Jews to this place for dinner. We sat for 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged our presence. We ordered our dinner and my fiancé decided we he wanted a coke afterwards. That literally took 8 minutes to get to our table. The restaurant wasn’t even full. On top of everything, they didn’t even have us down for showing up for our reservation.
Great food, we chose what the server recommended and it did not disappoint. Shrimp ceviche for an app and duck breast as the main!
It’s great love the seats outside , you get a good view of downtown
I love this place! Friendly staff, great service and good food. It is different from other Mexican food, for example the quesadilla was more like street tacos, but delicious none the less. The servings are small, but very satisfying. Guacamole is to die for - fresh, homemade, goodness!
Food was fresh and delicious! 2nd round of bar drinks took too long to be delivered, we were practically done with our entrees when they finally arrived.
Great spot in downtown Phoenix. Red Sangria was fantastic and went so well with the elote, guacamole and the duck! Duck had flavor that was perfect. Server Lauren very attentive with great suggestions. Very lively on a Tuesday night
Initial service was fine while taking order. The server was missing for most of the time. Several times we needed refills, she seemed to look over us. We asked for a coffee refill as our coffee was cold originally and she charged us for the Second cup. The food was great. We had breakfast and appetizers. The place has a cool vibe and seems like a fun place to go with friends. I would try it again just hope for better service. The food was worth it.
It's been a long time since a dinner out went so well. Crowd was very good, service was terrific and the food was even better.
Will be back - SOON
Our server was amazing, very kind, friendly, she knew the menu very well and actually upsold every meal and drink!
Nice place to grab a drink, snack or full meal. The bar is great and the wait staff was awesome!
Noise was OK on the patio. Too loud indoors. Food and service were good.
Food was amazing as were the margaritas. Service was a touch slow but I would definitely go back
Food was okay. Service was slow, although our waiter was awesome. Took 20 minutes to get drinks from the bar.
Dinner with my husband prior to the Bill Maher show. We had 6:30 reservations arrived around 6:43 due to busy garage and no parking. Tried to contact the restaurant multiple times but the phone call never went through as the reservation wasn’t accepting calls. Sat after 7:10 and I had asked the host if we would have enough time to eat prior to the show he assured me yes. We didn’t get our food until after 7:30pm but ate quickly. Pazole was cold, quesadilla was yummy and the mAnager and server were great in trying to accommodate my dietary restrictions and making my meal good. All in all the salsa was delicious and my husband liked his margarita, the food is sub par.
To start with the positive, our server was very good as was our arrival and on time seating.we ordered an appetizer and salad to split which also worked. My husband had ordered a red, wine but discovered it did not go with the salad and wanted a white. That took 15 minutes to get. As we sat there not eating our salad we watched a lady try to deliver drinks, she NEVER got them to the right table. It was just crazy, then we watched drinks being delivered that were wrong. We finally received a simple glass of white wine and finished our salad. Both salad and appetizers were good. Then they delivered our meal. Both were cold. I must say my fish was good, but room temperature, I think that it sat for 20 minutes in the kitchen while we finally our salad. My husbands steak was cold, but the worse part was it was like shoe leather. It was so tough and grizzly he had trouble cutting and eating it, the table next to us had the same and had the same problem with the steak.
Now to be totally honest, the comped the entire meal and gave us a gift card, so they did the right thing, but.... I would rather pay
Full price and have them get it right. I hope to be able to update with a more positive outcome in the future.
Again - I want to apologize for your experience with us. Please let me know when you're back in town so we can make it a proper Chico Malo evening. Look forward to seeing soon. Thor Nguyen General Manager
Service was terrible, didnt get entire meal for the 4 of us. They did comp the meal but thats not what we came for. We came for a good meal and got nothing close to it.
Guacamole was ok - 3 stars
Quesadilla - Zero stars. Would go negative if I could.
Chili Colorado excellent - 5 stars - “literally a million times better” than quesadilla
Beer - ice cold - 5 stars.
Service was ok, just slow.
Won’t go back - not worth it.
Such great food... all such good quality and well prepared. Creative twist of Mexican food while keeping intact authentic features. Will be back and totally recommend.
We started with the guacamole and it was some of the best we’ve ever eaten. Having almost filled up on that we decided to share a quesadilla with chicken. Great flor. The tortilla is made from blue corn and filled with a mixture of veggies. The chicken had great flavor. The house margarita is excellent. We’ll definitely return
A consistently good dining experience.
Food, service, drinks never disappoint!
Slow to get our dinner. Food was good but would have liked more sauce. The churro bread pudding was delicious. Good cocktails.
Excellent food. Had their pork, which they won awards for. Very unique presentation and it lived up to the billing. We will go back for sure.
We had great service and awesome food. Our server made excellent recommendations too:) The only negative was that our table was close to the bar and people were standing in the isle right next to our table...but it was for a short time as they waited for their table
Always soooooo Good!!
Great atmosphere. Knowledge staff. Creative food and a wide selection of tequilas and Mezcals.
Great food & downtown abiance
Had dinner here for Valentines Day before the concert. Everything was wonderful. The hostess greeted us and seated us quickly. The server, Gabby was very attentive and accommodating. She even made arrangements to get an orange when the kitchen had run out.
The food was very appetizing. I had the halibut and my date had the Colorado chili (I think that is the name of it). But both dishes were excellent.
The service was awesome. The attention to detail was equally as awesome. For the special day they even served a complimentary heart shaped churro. That was a very nice detail that was the perfect sweet bite to end the meal when I wanted dessert but had no room for it.
Awesome customer service.
Very friendly and knowledgeable service, beautiful food that was even more delicious and great cocktails. Will be coming back.
Nice food nice staff but the order was definitely taking longer than we expected.
Delicious food. If you are in town. Is a must go place. It’s worth it.
Such a fun atmosphere.
Food and restaurant were great!
This was our first time at Chico Malo. Overall the food, drink, and general ambiance were great. But we had a hard time finding the place because the map showed the restaurant facing Jefferson (50 West Jefferson) but the restaurant is actually a half block down Central Ave. Some advice on how to find the place would have been very welcome.
The food was good but the service wasn't so great. Waiters had a communication error of who was taking our table. The waiter who finally came over was nice but possible had too many tables to service. Long wait times. With the amount of restaurants downtown and surround areas I wouldn't go back here. It seemed like a club/restaurant in the bar area.
Service was horrible
Hostess was rude and extremely unfriendly
Asked for another tortilla the server was just angry and to be honest it was uncomfortable it was clear that the employees seemed angry
I wouldn’t recommend any one to this restaurant
Maybe in the future your employees should be careful as to who they choose to be rude too
Food was amazing and drinks even better!!! Will deff be back
