Chez Moi Ratings and Reviews
We were attending a lecture at nearby Floating World Gallery and with an early reservation we enjoyed a warm welcome, good wine and excellent authentic French cooking. The ambiance is chic, clean and warm with lovely art and French music. Lighting perfect!
We started with wine to take the chill off a rainy, miserable night. The Crabcake in lobster bisque pool starter was magnifique! The pris fixe meal offering at $45 was perfect. It afforded choice of salad or soup, choice of entree, dessert choice and generous glass of Beaujolais!
That evening the entree we chose was coq au vin; every morsel and drop was tasty! The rustic bread also on table sopped up every trace!
This was a highly recommended spot (Yelp)that we were lucky to discover. Reservations would be a good idea!

Wonderful French Food. The best French Onion soup in the city. We both had the Steak Frites and the sauce on the steaks was remarkable. Nice tender steaks, frites were nice and thick, cooked right, loved the seasoning. Friendly service. A hidden gem in this city.
Good food undermined by poor service. The wait staff disappeared for 7-15 minutes at a time. We were drinking a superior bottle of Bordeaux and found ourselves pouring it as our glasses emptied, we had long waits between courses, got completely forgotten about after our meal and finally had the host bring us dessert menus and ask if we wanted coffee. The wait staff spent an inordinate amount of time chatting among themselves. Disappointing.
Lastly, when they would clear the table between courses they did not wipe it down...they would set the next plates down in the debris on the table. Unprofessional.
There was an extraordinary long wait between first course and our entree. When my food arrived it was slightly different than my sister's dish which was the same order. The menu said the chicken came with vegetables and mashed potatoes. I had no mashed potatoes at all on my plate. She had potatoes. Though our server was nice, he seemed to be doing too many things at once. I ordered a rose wine. He brought a red. Again he was nice and corrected it but seemed to be overloaded with things he was doing.
Dominique always comes through on the food, mussels, onion soup, and short ribs for us. Very cozy atmosphere with just the right amount of buzz. And now there's a very cool speakeasy in the back, Ooh La La. Ring the doorbell on Dickens for entrance and get transported back in time. Chez Moi is a true neighborhood gem.
The service was excellent, the bar options were also excellent, but the food! The food was simply outstanding. The crabcake was the best I have ever had, the steak frites was just perfect. My friend raved about the foie gras and the cassoulet. Truly authentic French cuisine done perfectly. Can't wait to visit again!
We dined at Chez Moi before attending a play at Steppenwolf Theater, which is a moderate walk down the street. Nice French restaurant with lots of classic French dishes. My wife had the escargot and the tuna tartare which she adored. I had the soup of the day and the fish special, whole Branzino, both of which were excellent. And we had a nice bottle of Chablis. Followed that with shared profiteroles, McAllen 12 for my wife and a cognac recommended by the sommelier for me. Wonderful experience, attentive and friendly wait staff, very good food. Just lovely.
I wish I could give this a better review--the service was charming, if spotty, and I love the concept of the neighborhood bistro--but I ordered the waiter's recommendation and found it borderline inedible and CERTAINLY not worth the money.
I hope this was an exception and not the rule.
This is a favorite place we dine at 3-5 times a year and will return to. Server was a tad scattered. None of the servers know much about single malts--I finally asked just to see the bottles. The pastry of my onion tart was underdone (it was taken off the bill), mussels and frites were fine, trout excellent, and the bread pudding excellent as well. Our favorite French bistro in Chicago.
We went for their Mussel Fest Celebration. The mussels were offered in four different styles of preparation. We ate 3 of the four styles and each one was delicious. The chef spent time talking with us in the dining room. The wait staff was attentive without hovering.
