About Chez Josephine

The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

The second I walked in I felted wanted. The service was amazing and so was the food. The manager kindly sat me near the piano where the guy played beautiful music and I really liked how the restaurant looks old fashion. The drinks and desert was amazing too and I do recommend it to others! The pricing was reasonable as well as the kindness of all the workers. I felt very special and would definitely come back.

The roasted duck is absolutely delicious. Third time we've been there and second time having the duck. One of my favorite meals.

Zagat says of this restaurant: "They hit the right notes at this stalwart Theater District tribute to Josephine Baker, an old-style Parisian joint featuring capable French bistro fare from a welcoming staff, colorful boudoir decor and a pianist tinkling the ivories." I couldn't put it any better. That's exactly what it is. My wife and I met friends for dinner and had a great time. As soon as you walk in you know you're in a place that is happy and fun. In some ways, the rest was icing on the cake. The food was very good (try the Chinese Ravioloi). But come for the ambiance. It's a great place to eat before you go to the theater.

We met friends to celebrate our wives birthdays. It was nice hearing piano music while catching up. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the red snapper special and wife had the lamb loin. We then celebrated the birthdays with dessert, Champaign and birthday music. All in all, we had a very nice time.

Well established, busy French bistro with Parisian ambience, good service, live piano music, reservations a must. Very popular with theatergoers (pre or post performance) and great for a romantic rendezvous. My companion is a gourmand with an educated palate, and ordered three fundamental staples of French cuisine from the menu to test the chef: escargots, country pate and French onion soup. He found each delicious and beautifully presented. A bottle of a crisp Cotes de Provence rose proved the perfect accompaniment. We’ll be back often.

We love this place. The food is reliably high quality, fine service. The piano noise is excessive so don’t sit by it.

Service was exceptional. We were seated immediately for a reservation during a crowded period. Reservations a must, I would say. Food was terrific, and there was a decent wine list for every taste. Have been there often and will return.

Ambience pleasant. Staff efficient, professional. I ordered calf's liver; my husband ordered filet. Both were excellent quality meat, cooked perfectly as ordered. However, the potato croquettes that accompanied the liver were a disappointment (undercooked), and the frites with the steak were old, cold and inedible. The chocolate mousse was excellent. The price fixe menu appears to be good value, but we did not order from it.

Been here many times before and it's always good. Service was off this time. Seemed like
they were understaffed that day, but as the brunch crowd thinned out the service improved.

We have been to many restaurants before a show in New York City. This was by far the worst restaurant we had ever been to in the city. The service was terrible, we were there over two hours and had to continually bag to get everything. The food was awful. We had lobster bisque soup that taste like bad, thin tomato soup, Eggs Benedict that was so over cooked the eggs were hard boiled, and profiterole's that were stale. The temperature in the restaurant was so hot, that being dressed in layers for the cold made it impossible not to sit there and sweat. Sadly, I do not have one good thing to say about our experience at Chez Josephine. I would've given each area zero stars if it would've let me choose zero instead of one star.

This was a return visit to Chez Jo and we enjoyed it as much as the first time. Upon advice from hostess, we sat upstairs which is a bit quieter and less crammed. As a group we enjoyed the liver, fried chicken and chicken breast entrees. Service was friendly and efficient, and we were able to make our show curtain in plenty of time. Love the ambiance as well as the food!

Chez Josephine is a find . A restaurant that services delicious french food, not too rich,
just perfect. The service is excellent and the atosphere wonderful with a piano player
as well which adds to the mood. Honoring the late Josephine Baker, with appropriate decoration on walls, made for a perfect setting for intimate conversation.

I loved it!

We have been dining at Chez Josephine's for years and it has always been special. The ambiance is amazing and the music is always beautiful...Cole Porter, jazz, Gershwin kind of stuff. The service is always warm and we always leave feeling relaxed.

A traditional French inspired restaurant that has stood the test of time of 30 years. Nicely decorated with Parisienne items. Menu is basic and good with a something for everyone -1 of everything from beef, steak, lamb, fish, pasta, chicken. My wife enjoyed the calves liver which is something not found at many restaurants these days, I enjoyed the very large pork chop and our daughter elected the filet which she enjoyed. Presentation was average.
The best part was you could have a normal conversation and the live piano playing was a bonus which made the entire 2 hours a pleasant experience.

Service was very good, ambiance warm, duck was tasty, but the bisque was slightly warm and pilaf was cool. The waiter removed the bisque from the bill. Due to being there on a Monday evening was there a second string chef? Every visit to NYC we went to Chez Josephine, but it was disheartening last Monday.

Perfect setting. Was not crowded. We sat in a back area. The French Onion Soup was o.k., but too much cheese in it.
I’d give their chicken breast a “10.” The Creme Brûlée for dessert was the best.
The wait staff was superb. Would return.

Chez Josephine is a throwback to old times when piano players were revered, red curtains and fabulous chandeliers were respected, and minimalism was nowhere in sight. Add to that delicious food, wonderful service, great friends, and a love of Paris, and this place is just what the doctor ordered to escape the present (October, 2017) and jump into the romantic and elegant past.

My wife and I had an excellent pre-musical dinner. The ambiance is authentic Parisien (love the Gaugin replicas on the walls and the pianist). Service efficient without being hurried/ intrusive. Prix fixe menu excellent value with good sized portions (neither too big for my wife nor too small for me). Great quality food (ham and goat cheese salad, rabbit leg, apple tart tatin). Also good wine list with reasoable prices.
