Fair pricing. Local to hotel, short walk in Hell's kitchen. Great spot for a small business meeting. Wonderful old world atmosphere. Great food.
Very disappointing evening. We started out with the pate encroute which was pleasant. My son did enjoy his lamb shank and couscous (although the latter was on the bland side). My pork tenderloin ranged from cooked to perfection to a little on the underdone side. I had to send the sweet potato au gratin back as it arrived on that same plate barely lukewarm. Deserts on the prix fixe menu were fine but nothing special. The atmosphere is lovely and a pianist plays and sings. I shall probably give this another chance but can’t recommend it at this time.
Wonderful service, wonderful food, reasonable prices for NYC
The food was very good the service was OK the weather was a little slow but overall we truly enjoyed our experience the ambience is there it is a feel good place I would recommend to my friends
Lots of rain when we arrived at Chez Josephine! We chose it because of the piano music and fun ambience which we had enjoyed several years ago. The experience was relaxing, service good, and piano player joyful. Highly recommend!
This place wonderful. The piano player is so nice and the waiters were perfectly attentive. I go as often as I can and everyone I take there really enjoys it.
food was good but the service left a lot to be desired---mistake was made twice on the bill and it still has not been corrected 3 days later--felt like no one knew what they were doing and my friend had to ask twice for a menu--felt as though they did not have enough help
I hadn't been here for at least 8 years and was happy to see that nothing has changed since Jean Claude's passing a few years ago. The food is still fabulous and the ambience is like no other. Good crowd and not noisy like most restaurants these days. It was a wonderful evening!
Wonderful escargots, delicious duck, scrumptious creme brûlée, tasty wine, charming, efficient unobtrusive service, lovely decor. I love this placeE
We had 2 orders of spaghetti Bolognese and the fried chicken. The spaghetti was so so. The chicken was very, very dry instead of being moist. The blueberry cornbread that came with the chicken was unremarkable. The rolls served before dinner, while warm, seemed to be a little stale.
The staff was very professional and courteous, and made sure that we were able to complete our meal in the limited time available before we had to leave for the theater. The restaurant setting is nice and would be good for a romantic dinner out.
Our friends were delayed and we alerted the server, Ulises U; we still had to finish in time to make a 2 p.m. matinee. He did everything to make sure that our friends were able to order without a long wait, and that their meals arrived hot. We enjoyed the varied specials and some items on the regular menu; wine-by-the-glass was a winner as well. Thank you, Chez Josephine, and especially Ulises.
The food was delicious and we were very happy with the service as well.
Great atmosphere and friendly attentive staff. Every meal and course had great presentation and tasted wonderful.
terrific brunch with wonderful music and gorgeous decor
My mother had a wonderful birthday so very grateful to the staff :)
Piano player and woman singing were amazing as well. We sat by the piano so was a little loud but overall great atmosphere and yummy food.
We will be returning to try different dishes!!!!
It is like a trip to Paris in the 1930s.... old school menu (escargots, onion soup, duck a l’orange, trout almandine) but with modern twists. Generous portions at low (for Manhattan) prices. Service was attentive but not obtrusive. Entertainment was in keeping with the ambiance.... first a piano player, then a French chanteuse accompanied by her own piano player. In 30 years my wife and I have dined all over the world. This was one of our Top Five meals.
The food and service was excellent!!
They forgot my wife’s birthday although they knew we were celebrating when they called to confirm. Joseph the pianist is awful & detracts from the restaurant. He should be replaced. We love everything else about Chez Josephine.
Terrific meal!
Very theatrical setting fit for 42nd Broadway scene. Music is a bit louder than expected but very fun vibe.
This is one of our favorite restaurants. The ambience and music are wonderful, and the story of Josephine Baker is always delightful to experience. We look forward to coming back soon.
This was the best meal and experience while on vacation in NYC.
Always wonderful to return here. The food, the service, the ambience all terrific.
And Manny greets us with such happiness to see us again.
One of the best restaurants in the city.
We were very disappointed this visit. The quality of food preparation and recommendation from our server was substandard. We had the liver entree, which we both normally love elsewhere. We asked our server if it was thinly sliced and if medium well was best ( how we normally like it). He responded that it was thinly sliced and medium was the best preparation. We agreed to that. But it was thick sliced, underdone, with too much wine used during preparation, and not at all like it was described by our server. We would not order it again.
Warm, impeccable service in a gorgeous space filled with unique art. Our meal was yummy and the live music was magnifique!
Great food. Very exclusive service. Life music waa great but a little too loud for such a small place. Overall, loved it. Would come back to try other dishes.
As usual, warm welcome, very professional service, excellent traditional French food.
Always a favorite ... and never disappoints!! Great food and a fabulous prix fixe menu too! The service is OUTSTANDING!!
This is an always dependable restaurant with delicious food, convenient to the theater district. I recommend it!
Really wanted to like this place, but the service was not great and my shrimp were very tough.
The place is extremely noisy ! To the point it’s not comfortable.
Absolutely love Chez Josephine! I had not been there in many years as I do not live in NYC anymore, so I was very excited to dine there Sunday night as I was back in NYC with my family.
Graet food and atmosphere and I love having the piano player.
Always a relaxing fine dining experience - great food and service!
We have been coming to Chez Josephine for years when its founder, the late Jean-Claude Baker, was holding sway. And now that it's in the highly capable hands of Manuel, I trust we will continue to come here for years to come. Wonderful food, excellent wine list, personable service from real restaurateurs makes it a wonderful place to come for special days, as we have for the last several Easter Sundays, Mother's Days and Thanksgivings.
We loved the ambiance and the servers and entire staff were terrific. What was a bit lacking was the food. The crab cake appetizer portion was tiny. For the price they could have doubled the portion! Ditto, the cheese app. We were very happy the bread was flowing and the delicious Cote Du Rhone wine. Entree-wise the food was better and they took my allergies (onion/garlic) into account but instead of finding sauce substitutes, they made my Trout pretty plain. Come on! A great chef would find a way to make it tasty. In Paris, I've never had issues. I love French food and was really looking forward to this experience. Alas, it disappointed.
Reliable for good after-theater dinner. Pianist, lively scene, friendly service.
Excellent sur toute la ligne. Le personnel est sympathique, accueillant, et la nourriture, exquise. L'ambiance feutrée rappelle les restos typiques de Paris.
My daughter’s 14th birthday
We love Chez Joséphine! Great ambiance, good food and wines. We'll be back.
Everything about it exceeded our expectations.
