About Chez Josephine

The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

We have come to Chez Josephine for many years. The food is consistent and well prepared and the service has always been friendly and attentive. Just thinking about the onion soup I had makes my mouth water. The location on West 42nd Street is especially convenient if you are going to one of the theaters in the area like Playwrights Horizons, Signature Theatre or even the American Airlines Roundabout Theatre or 2nd Stage. They do a brisk pre-theater business so I would recommend making a reservation. You won't be disappointed.

My friends and I had an amazing time here. It was there first time coming here and they all loved hope the service and live music was! Everything went well and the host was very caring to our satisfaction, which was also great. We would love to come back again.

The food was just okay. I expected it to be more flavorful. The french onion soup was basic and the tiger shrimp entrée with risotto and brussels sprouts was okay. The risotto was flavorful but the shrimp and sprouts were bland.

The pianist was excellent. However, I would not revisit!

We had a last minute reservation and we're treated royally. Without being annoying, the wait staff was very attentive. The prix fixed menu was varied and the leg of rabbit was delicious.

Chez Josephine is and deserves to be a Theatre District landmark. It's a warm, friendly bistro that pays homage to entertainment and civil rights legend Josephine Baker, a tribute created by the late, great Jean-Claude Baker to his adopted mother and carried on by a loving management and staff. The food is delicious, the service crisp and caring without being stuffy. "Chez J" is a great place for a celebration or for an intimate dinner for two. A trip back to New York would not be complete without at least one visit to Chez Josephine.

I would go here again pre/post theatre for a drink, but the food was not that good. Nice atmosphere with the piano player, but the restaurant is very tired looking. The service was very good and everyone was extremely courteous.

I love this place. My only reluctance in writing a review is that when more people discover this place then the less likely that I'll be able to get a reservation! Brunch on Sundays with the live piano is fabulous. The food is great -- portions are large so keep that in mind. Enjoy!

We hadn't been to Chez Josephine in some time and realized that we should have returned much sooner.
This restaurant is an authentic Manhattan treasure. Having been started by Josephine Baker's son many years ago, it maintains the standards of classic French bistro cuisine and provides
an evening of terrific entertainment featuring pianists, singers, and small groups. The
atmosphere of the interior will take you to left bank Paris with a New York flair.
The specials of the evening were very well prepared, and the wine list offered many well priced selections. We'll be back soon!

An awesome gem within the midst of the hustle and bustle of Times Square. The amazingly beautiful setting is tribute to Ms Josephine Baker. The food is comforting and very tasty, served by an attentive staff that were both friendly and informative. The talented pianist added to the cozy atmosphere by playing a popular selection of cabaret tunes and took requests as we sang along. We will definately be coming back again and again for this wonderful dining experience.

The decor, ambiance and service was great. The food was ok, not bad not great. The portions were on the small side. Lobster bisque and shrimp entree was bland. Beet salad and creme brûlée desert were very good. Had a child with us who ordered plain spaghetti and fries, they charged us for full price spaghetti bolognese entree $22 and for 2 orders of fries. Staff was very friendly.

AMAZING place! Went there for Christmas dinner. Unforgettable experience. It's tight quarters, which I thought would be a problem, but it was great getting to talk to the people next to us — you still don't have to if you don't want to. We were there for live piano music, a singer and a clarinet-player. Absolutely wonderful experience. We order fried oysters and the Christmas foi gras special... to die for. It was a great night and the perfect place to celebrate Christmas in the city. In fact, it was my favorite stop we made throughout our whole trip. Highly recommend. Waiters are friendly, food is amazing, and if you can get there on a Monday for the live music, do so!! Totally unique New York experience.

Atmosphere was festive and decor is wonderfully intimate. However, this is where the positive comments end. Waiter ignored us most of the night, bread was given to every other table but ours, appetizer and entree were average. $14 Yule log dessert was an inedible frost-bitten disgrace.

It was OK... the restaurant looks very impressive and the decor is good but I was disappointed in the menu and service overall. The server managed to give my bank card to another customer by mistake and eventually one of the managers (I think) called the customer and it was resolved when the customer brought it back. I appreciate it was a mistake but I wasn't impressed by their reactions to this. I waited almost an hour for the card to be returned and they were sort of apologetic about their mistake but not really. They half heartedly and far too late offered me another wine while waiting (1 minute before the customer returned when I had already been waiting about an hour). I also thought the portions were a bit sparse. It was ok but wasn't impressed by the service or portions overall.

This place is bye far the best thing going for a romantic atmosphere and overall vibe. Theres a piano player that plays music all evening long. The wine list is phenomenal and waitstaff is top notch. It’s one of the oldest places still around in this pet of manhattan with a rich history. A must try with a special person. The Chinese ravioli and filet are amazing.

We were sorely disappointed by Chez Josephine. The food was mediocre as was the live pianist. The drinks were so-so. The atmosphere was ok - but, don't look up! Some of the chandeliers looked like they could fall at any minute. Skip this one for other, much better places to eat around Times Square!

Such a fun atmosphere, complete with accessories that would be over-the-top tacky in some places, but are perfect for this theater district bistro. We had live singing at the piano during Saturday lunch by a woman who may have been there since the place opened, but it upped the atmosphere. They know how to get you out in time for a show, but you never feel rushed. And they were kind enough to let us in on a recent rainy, bone-chilling day when we were early for our res. Great value prix fixe brunch menu. Reasonable and delicious.
