About Chez Josephine

The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

I love the food at Chez Josephine. It is a favorite pre-theater matinee spot on Sundays. They are very accommodating. One of their popular items (with me) was not on the menu this time, but they made it for me anyway. The piano in the background is a very nice touch!

sorry but cannot recommend this restaurant. attended dec. 9th evening . nice enough ambiance for sure, but piano playing constant and too loud...he didnt break for 2 hours we were there. the chicken was dry served with very small SLIVERS of cornbread and the crabcakes at 34.00 were so small we thought it was an appetizer . The onion soup was great!
i would go back for the soup only. regrets two people w/o tip no drinks at all....107.00
so many more and better places in Hell's Kitchen

Really good food and beautiful place... however, the waiters ignored my wife and I. In order to get food, I had to get up, walk over to the staff station, and ask for things

I was a bit disappointed that, despite mentioning that I was bringing my mother to her favorite restaurant for her 80th birthday, there was no acknowledgement of her birthday, either verbally or in some small single-candle dessert bite.

Poor service, bad shrimp risotto boiled I think. Waiter spilled liquid on my pants, he said it was just a dot, it wasn’t and even if it was it shouldn’t be dismissed. Never brought drinks that were ordered, asked to see the manager 3 times and then found him myself. He said he was comping $64, revised the bill only $24 off. Paid the bill as is -couldn’t deal with it any further.

Great table server. Pasta dish said it was artisanal pasta. Looked and tasted like a box of penne pasta off the shelf. Seafood cassoulet was disappointing. Duck was good. There were no tough threads to chew and prepared well.
Interesting atmosphere and I have eaten here several times over the years. This was my first disappointing time.

Management has a lot of work to do. Wait staff should all work together, making each table feel welcomed, comfortable and well-attended to. Went to bathroom and overheard server/bus cussing out someone or maybe to himself. That kind of behavior didn’t surprise me, but it also shouldn’t be tolerated. One server in particular was apologetic and attentive, but it seemed every staffer was overwhelmed by the business of the restaurant. That shouldn’t happen. Stay calm, do you job and make each customer feel like they aren’t invisible. Spaghetti bolognese needs work. The sauce can be so much better. The filet was good.

Noisy restaurant. Food was very mediocre. The rolls were hard and tasteless. Fried chicken portion was very small. Pork chops were good. Would not return to this restaurant.

We went for pre-theatre dinner. The staff was attentive and food came quickly. The rolls were not warm and were not that good. French onion soup was very good, but the first bowl was chipped and returned to kitchen. Two large crab cakes were not that good. Fried chicken was good, but one piece was not completely cooked—blood near the bone. Very disappointing dinner.

I was trying to find a good French neighborhood restaurant close to our theater. This met the French goal in name and some of the dishes but little else. The decorations, while fun, are eclectic and not really French. The rolls were stale (my favorite part of French dining). I did enjoy the escargot, but my lobster salad was tiny and had little flavor. The cassoulet was delicious, so if you end up here, maybe go for that dish. I would find another French restaurant for next time.

Having been to Chez Josephine twice this fall, I feel like it is almost three different restaurants. Before 8pm, it is packed with happy tourists pre-theater. Between 8pm and 10:30pm it is quiet and has some regulars. And then after 10:30pm it becomes a bit of a mixed bag... everyone is a little looser and a little drunker, the music is more raucous, you're more likely to have a random guest singer... folks don't have a deadline, the kitchen is open late, the bartender is skilled, and everyone is having a good time.

Restaurant was overbooked.
One couple with reservation complained they were waiting for 30 minutes. Even tho we gave our name to maitre ‘d upon our arrival we had to wait 25 minutes and reported to OpenTable that we were “no show” even tho we spent over $250 and have a receipt to prove it.
It took 15 minutes and 3 reminders to get our menus.
We weren’t told of any daily specials even tho next table that came after us were

Overcrowded. Chaotic check in process. Had to wait more than 45 minutes after booked time for a table. Too many tables packed into a small space. Sitting on top of neighboring couples. Good live music and lively ambiance.

We had a 7pm reservation. After arriving at 7 and checking in with the host we were not seated for over 30 mins. Every time we asked for an update we were told to wait 5 mins. Once we were finally seated we were ignored at our table for 15 minutes and had to physically wave down the waiter for service. The food was brought out quickly and it felt as if we were rushed through our meal, which I guess was ok being the food was mediocre at best.

We arrived at 5 so not very busy at that time but no one came to ask us for a cocktail order. We waited patiently and eventually had to ask for some service but after that they were attentive.
The decor was fabulous with vibrant murals of Josephine Baker, a very talented piano player and a general ambience of being in Gay Paree. We shared fried oysters for an appetizer and found them tender and tasty. My red snapper served on couscous was scrumptious and my daughter loved the Lobster cassoulet. We thought "definitely a keeper". Then my daughter was horribly sick later that evening, so thinking some of the seafood in the cassoulet was bad. It's never good to experience that after a meal so not sure if I will try again. Shame.

Loved the cocktails, the drinks, the appetizers and the ambiance and the live piano. Wonderful. The steak was overcooked, make sure to order the filet mignon au poivre medium rare or rare, probably. The spaghetti bolognese was delicious. Can't wait to take my fiance there again!

Fabulous! Recommended by our Marriott Concierge. I ordered the pasta, "Josephine's favorite" and it is now my favorite! The salad was perfect, the wine reasonable and high quality and the piano player superb! He played requests and knew them by heart. The noise level was low and allowed easy conversation. The staff was friendly and efficient and the value was very reasonable. I am going back next time we are in New York!

It’s rare to find a restaurant with a piano /bass combo playing great songs from the Josephine Baker era. Wonderful when we were seated. Then the best was a very fine singer joining at 7. The food was good but not flashy, but the Paris bistro feel was exceptional.

The manager kindly sat me near the piano where the guy played beautiful music and I really liked how the restaurant looks old fashion. The drinks and desert was amazing too and I do recommend it to others! The pricing was reasonable as well as the kindness of all the workers. I felt very special and would definitely come back.
