Chez Josephine

The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Patrons who may have fretted about the survival of Chez Josephine post-Jean Claude and post-pandemic can relax a bit longer. Chez Josephine lives, and Manuel continues to honor the legacy of Josephine Baker and Chez Josephine founder Jean Claude Baker, offering excellent service, the romance of the live piano, and delicious food.

The ambiance of the restaurant remains wonderful. Last night, Dennis was at the piano, terrific on the ivories and with a sweet voice. There were a dozen (mostly former) Broadway performers eating together at a nearby table--we always ask to be seated near the piano--who joined in beautifully on a few of Dennis's Great American Songbook standards.

Food remains very good. We started with two appetizers, a watermelon with feta cheese salad and a lovely dish of goat cheese, figs, and prosciutto. My wife's filet mignon au poivre was excellent, as was my whole lobster salad. Chocolate mousse cake (hers) and fresh seasonal berries (mine) topped off a lovely occasion.

We miss the monkey and palm tree that used to be suspended from the ceiling near the piano, but virtually all of the old Josephine Baker memorabilia are still in place--as is Jerry Baker!--and the small changes in décor that tone down some of the heavier baroque notes may well be expressions of a more modern, refined taste.

If you've never been to this romantic, fascinating New York treasure, you won't want to keep missing Chez Josephine: check it out soon. And if you haven't made it in for some time--since the lockdown or longer--we can report that it's as good--maybe better--than ever, that its fond ghosts Josephine and Jean Claude live on, and that you should get on in there and help Manuel keep Chez Josephine cookin'.

Finally, don't leave without checking out the restrooms. They are worth the climb up steep stairs to see--in the men's room (can't speak for the women's)--the framed posters of Josephine Baker in "Princesse Tam-Tam" and, with Jean Gabin, in "Zou Zou."

Chez Josephine is a remarkably jolly place that’s lost none of its zip since COVID. The filets we ordered were excellent as was our salad. The piano player added to our experience. Always a fave of our family.

Everything we hoped for! Gorgeous decor, wonderful piano, great wine and food, professional waiter. My only complaint is that not enough people have class any more. I'm in a jacket, my wife all dolled up for a $250 evening (worth it!), and many others were too, but sure as hell there's a jack-a-mo sitting near us with his stupid Yankees cap on, then a couple in tee-shirts and shorts walk in as well. It's tough for any restaurant to turn customers away right now, and the restaurant shouldn't have to police people for class anyway.

Great spot in theater area. Staff was superb. Ambiance was cute. Solid French cuisine with some fresh variations. Once Broadway opens in a few months this will be the perfect place for pre/post show dinners. Highly recommend.

Our favorite French restaurant in NYC. Went for lunch, we we e the only ones in the restaurant, so it was very intimate. Hopefully they will get busier again when Broadway reopens, they used to get a big matinee crowd. Our server, also working as bartender, was very attentive, made the best Mojito I've ever had, food was absolutely delicious. My husband says they have the best escargot, and he had the lobster salad for lunch, cleaned the plate! I had tomatoes with fresh mozzarella, and Eggs Benedict, all yummy. It was my husbands birthday so our server gave us a complementary Creme Brulee, to die for.

We. have often dined at Chez Josephine, and had missed it during the pandemic. The ambiance, the wonderful piano music, the friendliness and the quality of the service is outstanding. This even the place seemed brighter -- perhaps it had been spruced up during the break. Our meal was great!

We went for Mother's Day dinner. There were six of us. We were going to have a good time since we have not seen each other in over a year.

The cocktails were lovely and delicious. I would good back to order a spicy margarita.

My daughter's ordered from the pre-fixe menu and the asparagus soup was delicious and the steak was perfect. The bone marrow?? Why?? My shrimp cocktail was fresh. My escargots was dry. I was disappointed because I love dipping my bread into the butter sauce.

My cousin ordered the trout almondine and it looked spectacular.
The cheesecake for dessert was smooth.

The presentation for all the food was on point.

Would I go there again? Yes. The restaurant has that old New York/Paris ambiance. They had a piano playing.
Why did I not give hire marks? The dry escargot and they charged my daughter's credit card three times.

Love this place before but a bit disappointed in the service. Took way to long to get a drink, I’m always amazed at restaurants who don’t offer a cocktail within first 5-8 min of your arrival (it took nearly 20) & why they don’t see when your glass is empty this is where they make the most money!

Food was good, lobster bisque was excellent but disappointed in the lamb chops as they a bit on the fatty side.

Ambiance is the best part of this restaurant with the amazing piano player/Singer.

Will be back to try again because I believe everyone can have an “off” day & hoping I’m right.

Oh boy. How can I convey to the new owner how important a professional server is to a dining establishment such as this? The young son could not have been any worse than he was. Not rude, just terribly unprofessional and not what you would want running or working in your restaurant. I hope they make it! The food is outstanding, but service is such an essential part of a dining experience. I could not even begging to explain, but let me try. I asked about soup du jour. He had to go check. 10 min later he returned. He took that order before even bringing bottle of wine we ordered. He then wanted to take our main course order right away. I asked about fish of the day or specials. His reply was a flat, “we don’t have any”. Ok. We requested more time, bit he returned so long after we finished our soups. Then I asked about the sole on the prefix menu from the older fellow and he said that I could order. So the young server asked me from behind the bar, while mixing a drink if that is what I wanted. I asked if it was an al a carte as he suggested or an entry with accompanying sides. He never refilled our wine glasses, checked on our meal when nearly finished, never offered sparking water (a French staple) and seemed lazy and unenthusiastic about our visit. We laughed to ourselves all night about his horrible service and demeanor. We actually tossed around the idea to leave after our soup as we thought we would never come back to our table for our entree order. Other than that, the food was exceptional and the atmosphere and music were exquisite!

Duck was over cooked, why ask how I want it? The lobster cassoulet was really just a fish stew, not at all a cassoulet, and was very salty and the seafood rubbery. Piano was great, however the apartments next door blasting music wasn't.

They are consistently good. They won’t knock your socks off by any means, but they are consistent. It is my go-to place when I need to feed out-of-town guests over 30 years of age. Younger guests prefer trendy rooftop venues, but this place is much better for adults, I’ve found.

Amazing restaurant and food. We sat by the piano player and it was still ok and not too loud. It was actually a birthday celebration and i noted that at the time of booking, but nothing was done! But that's ok, i'll keep going to this restaurant because it is good value for money and it's truly beautiful.
