Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Staff and food at this establishment never disappoint......consistently good for the past 30 yrs I've been dining there
We arrived early for our 8:00pm reservation, in the hope of revelling in the mood and enjoying a couple of drinks at the bar.
We were barely in the door and we were given “the hand” 👋🏻 no seating available at the bar.
What a pity as we ended up spending the extra at another establish for the additional hour.
Unfortunately the food was poor quality and overpriced. My wife had the rack of lamb and said it was the worst she had ever eaten. My dish, the spaghetti Bolognese was only ok. Piano music during dinner was enjoyable but didn't compensate for the food
Great food, great service and nice atmosphere with the piano player.
Second visit to Chez Josephine. Love the Ambiance! The food is DELICIOUS! I had the Norwegian Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict. I recommend it. Had a lovely time talking to the Pianist! The wait staff is attentive. We enjoy Chez Josephine very much.
Excellent food and excellent service. Perfect place for a good meal if you are in the theater district.
Excellent service e, excellent cuisine. Ambiance was created well and worked perfectly. We will return.
A New York classic with something for everyone. The piano music, the regulars and theater goers create a lively atmosphere with good food as a plus.
Great time, will be back
The food was excellent, and the service (aside from being a little slow to get started) was also terrific. Although we were right on time for our 7 PM reservation, we waited about 15 minutes to get seated and the bar was so crowded, we could only stand at the front, coats in hand and wait. Once we were seated, the waiter was slammed and didn't get to us for several minutes. We weren't in a rush and thoroughly enjoyed the live music (the pianist was certainly a highlight of the evening). But it would have been nice to at least have a cocktail while we waited for attention. Once the theatre-goers cleared out, we received the excellent service we had anticipated. It was worth the wait! I suggest not making a reservation before 7:45 and be prepared to drop over $100 per person. If that works for you, then book it and ENJOY!
I love this place and go at least 3 times a year. But this time felt different and serves was not the same. I left without having desert and they fo the best creme burlee in NY.
We visited during restaurant week and were disappointed to see that the menu was not as interesting as the usual Prix Fixe deal. We began with pheasant pate, which was good (though the described fig accompaniment was not in evidence); we were surprised to find this is not made in the kitchen but outsourced. The sea bream was moist and enjoyable, with a tasty sauce, though ginger flavour was barely discernible. The lemon tart, from the a la carte menu, was disappointing, minuscule, covered with whipped cream and with a rather chewy texture (also outsourced?), though the accompanying ice cream was excellent. We wished we had stuck with the restaurant week desert. Our guest had fresh berries, which were excellent. The service was very good, as always. Unfortunately we were unable to enjoy the delightful French cafe ambiance or the Josephine Baker memorabilia as we were seated in a table in the window which, although quieter, rather isolated us from the rest of the restaurant. (I had requested a table away from the window when I booked). All in all, this was a rather disappointing visit to a favourite restaurant.
I loved the piano player and the ambiance of the restaurant. We ordered off the Restaurant Week menu and found the appetizer and entree exceptional. We got out of the restaurant with plenty of time to make the 8:00 curtain. I will definitely go back to Chez Josephine on my next trip to NYC.
Attentive service & delicious food all presented in front of a wonderful pianist before our show at the theatre-a definite must do!!!
This restaurant has it all. The service was incredible. The only hiccup was that I didn’t get my vegetables substituted as I requested. The food was excellent. The piano music was fantastic. I love the decor and ambiance.
Good French food and very good service
Food was OK, the service and ambiance great....the desserts were great.
This restaurant exceeded all expectations! And the live piano music playing softly in the background perfected the ambiance. I will definitely go again on my next NYC trip
Beautiful piece of NY history. Has an elegant vibe and knows what its niche is and does it effortlessly. Excellent date spot. Attentive service. Some interesting menu items. Prix fixe well-priced. Feels like a NY institution.
The food and drinks are always wonderful. The piano player is excellent as well.
My favorite place in New York City. Beautiful restaurant, live piano, lovely staff, great wine and food selection. I felt like I had teleported back to the 1920's. Just wonderful! 😍
We come to NYC twice a year and always make sure we get to Chez Josephine. It has a distinct jazzy vibe with live music most evenings and terrific decor highlighting Josephine Baker. The food is delicious, French and very consistent. Some people dine here pre theatre but we prefer to come at eight so we can settle in and soak up the rich atmosphere and lively service.
We celebrated my birthday dinner at Chez Josephine. I loved it! The food was delicious. The drinks we're good and I Loved the live music ( piano, clarinet and singing). We will definitely go back!!
Fantastic dinner experience before seeing Moulin Rouge. The service was top-notch, the lobster bisque was one of the best I’ve ever had (and I’m picky), and the service was attentive and superb.
Lovely place to go before or after theater. Wonderful piano music mostly of older show tunes. Nice background, but not intrusive. Prefix dinner is $42 with nice choices. Outstanding service.
This is a wonderful restaurant with ambiance. The service was excellent, and the food was very good.
They had a pianist there the night we went and it immediately set a tone - no pun intended - that was warm and effervescent.
The only criticism is that it was a hair louder than it should have been. The pianist, however, was grand (again, no pun intended).
My duck entree was fabulous. Other three diners really enjoyed their entrees. My sister was stuffed but still cleaned off bones of her lamb meal. We shared chocolate Ala Josephine chocolate dessert which was perfect. Waiters were prompt, friendly and courteous. We didn’t care for the escargot - too garlicky.
Old NY. Service was friendly without being obtrusive. Menu varied, drinks good, great atmosphere.
My husband had the French onion soup and he said it was the best he had ever had. I had the trout amandine which was light and tasty. The string beans were cooked perfectly and were delicious.
This was my second visit to Chez Josephine. The waiters were very attentive and the food authentically French and wonderful. The 3 course daily specials are a bargain and the options are broad enough to satisfy all tastes. We especially enjoyed the skate wing and butternut squash couscous, asparagus soup and apple tart.
Thank you Chez Josephine!
I Ioved every second of it as soon as i walked through the door !
The interior, as if I stepped back in time and was in the cutest French bistro, in the middle of Paris, the live music..who doesn't love listening to an amazing piano player! And the FOOD! I chose to order off the prix fixe menu for brunch...can not go wrong! All so amazingly delicious! And the service was exceptional..so thank U!
Order a cocktail, sit back and enjoy every moment!
Eaten here 3 times. This was the best. Quiet upstairs dining room NOT next to the piano allowed for conversation. The onion soup, rack of lamb , my wife’s ribeye special and the tart Tatin all outstanding. And the little cheesy biscuits- to die for.
Delicious food! Would recommend even with kids. Loved the piano!
Always a great time at this favorite spot.
Very positive experience. We were offered a choice and chose in the back away from piano. This was great as it was a very loud bar scene up front. Our table was quiet and we could talk but still here the wonderful pianist. The duck entree was perfect, but the salmon was served rare even though we asked for medium. The service was excellent even on a busy Saturday night.
While I admit to being a bit prejudiced in favor of an establishment bearing Josephine (Baker’s) name, once there, I can say objectively that I was impressed........by the food and the service........and Josephine or not, who would return if the food were not delicious? Good vibe, good food.....and hospitable. A visit about once every two months may be my plan.
Delightful ambience like a cafe in Paris. The presence of the pianist was a big plus.
Food is ok to try! Not bad but not a must to try in your life as well. However, the service is totally terrible, I felt like I owe 1 million dollars to the waiter.. I think he should improve on his communication skill and be more passion on serving.
Food was excellent, service great and location very convenient for our theater visit.
