Very good lunch menu. Quiet and comfortable. The waiter was outstanding- gracious, personable and very accomadating.
Wonderful meal. Excellent service & the memorabilia was such a wonderful touch. Josephines memory lives on and the scallops exquisite.
We visited Chez Josephine for Sunday brunch. The restaurant did not appear to be too crowded; however, the serving staff was not very attentive to our table. After 1.5 hours of waiting for our food, we decided to leave, as we only had a limited time in the city and didn't want to spend it waiting. We had high hopes for this restaurant based on other reviews, and it was unfortunate that we were unable to have a similar experience.
Came here for a pre-theatre dinner before catching an 8pm show at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, which was just a short 6 minute walk away. Dinner reservation at 6pm gave us plenty of time. The ambiance, live jazz music, service and food at Chez Josephine were all absolutely fantastic.
We opted for a table on the second floor for a slightly quieter setting than the bustling first floor.
And pork chop
Great wait staff
Food was Phenomenal. The man playing on the piano and the woman singing were a great couple. Her voice was magical and his fingers on the piano was phenomenal. Felt like I was back in Paris
The food was wonderful with very unique ambiance. Our waitress was great, but seemed to have quite a few tables to mange. Would definitely go back!
Second time here. Friendly server willing to go that “extra mile.”
A great spot to stop for dinner just before a Broadway show. It had character, the food was delicious, and the service was excellent.
Lovely pre-theater dinner!
I have enjoyed Chez Josephine for over 20 years! The are always attentive without being overbearing. The live music in the evening is delightful. The menu has so many favorites!
Great place to go before the theatre. Near to shows. Service is very attentive to time. Excellent food and experienced staff.
The most delightful duck le'orange!
Excellent pre-theater meal, with nice ambience and very good service. Our server asked if we were going to a show and when it started and we got out with plenty of time, even though it was a Saturday night. We were seated upstairs, which turned out to be perfect, as the tables were spaced apart better than down stairs and the noise level was more moderate. The food was perfect, from appetizers thru entrees and some very tasty desserts. We go n the city a few times a year (until covid) and I've been meaning to eat here, but now I will definitely go back!
My first time here, but my friend has been here many times before. Beautiful restaurant. Food wasn't out of this world, but good enough. It's really about the atmosphere, ambiance, history, and location! Love the live music and the crowd. Service was great, and delicious cocktails and drinks.
I dined here last year for the first time and was thrilled to see the restaurant had survived the pandemic and was thriving anew. Perhaps it’s because I received so much personal attention last time that I felt so let down this time around. We were seated immediately because we arrived early but it took forever for our orders to be taken, the side orders for our entree arrived first and then we had to wait for the appetizer course and wait again and eventually request our entrees. The food was excellent, Sherri on the piano was soothing and I suspect the problem was being served with the pre-theatre crowd. I’d love to go back, but not before 8:00.
Had the fixed price menu. The sole was excellent. The desserts were very good. We were late but they were very cooperative. Always admired the courage of Josephine Baker.
The food was very good. The service we received was far below our expectations. We had bread plates but were never offered bread. We had a bottle of white wine and were given an ice bucket after drinking half the bottle. The service staff seemed confused on the night we were there.
Excellent food and the decor is very cool. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I've been dining here for years and convenient when seeing a show. A real gem.
The best restaurant in the theatre district!
Everything was very good except the watermelon and feta salad. For $16.00 I received the equivalent of one slice of watermelon (probably 25cents worth), a couple of crumbles of feta, a tiny brushing of arugula and basically no balsamic dressing. It was a complete rip-off which really took away from what would otherwise be an excellent review. They should no better!!!
Great food, incredible service, perfect setting, complete with live music! Couldn’t be better!
Wonderful atmosphere, great entertainment, and fabulous food! Staff was incredible! We can’t wait to come back! Classic NYC! Josephine would be proud!
The staff was welcoming and food delicious!
We were the first table to sit for brunch before a Saturday show, ordered prix-fixe and didn't even make it to dessert in the two hours that we were there because of how understaffed it was. Couldn't get our water glasses filled, couldn't even get the server's attention to ask for the check, kept getting shrugged off. Asked if we could switch the dessert to the non-ice cream option of the prix-fixe and get it to go since we were in a hurry, server came back and tossed us a bag and said, "good luck eating that to go, it's ice cream." The food itself was underwhelming and the portions were tiny.
The decoration and piano music are spectacular! Very soothing! Food is delicious! Great place to have dinner before a show in Broadway. I’ll certainly recommend it and go back.
My friend and I came here for my birthday dinner celebration. The atmosphere was charming and the piano player played “Happy birthday” and “La Vie en Rose”.
My filet mignon was perfect and I loved the Au Poivre sauce. My friend got the crab cakes and truffled mashed potatoes which were absolutely delicious!
The staff was so lovely. They made us feel so special.
I’ll be back for sure!
Great place - love coming here! Fantastic food and very unique atmosphere. Love the crew.
Very friendly staff and wonderful atmosphere.
Out of three of us, 2 dishes had to be sent back because they were cold.
Once they returned, the food was very good
But as someone who would very rarely send something back to the kitchen, the fact that I had to for both me and my friend, says a lot.
I expect a great deal more from a fine French restaurant in business for 30 years.
Alfredo was an amazing server and the rest of the staff were attentive and friendly but also gave us plenty of time to enjoy our anniversary date.
Manuel was incredible, generous, and friendly.
The food was incredible. The lobster ravioli was so delicious that I cried.
The staff also helped us enjoy our meal in a timely fashion so that we could leave for our show on time.
I chose the restaurant because we are fans of Josephine Baker. The decor was lovely and the pictures and memorabilia created the romantic and nostalgic atmosphere we were hoping for!
An amazing dinner at this classic French restaurant in the heart of NYC’s Theatre District. The escargot was one of the best dishes I’ve ever had. The duck breast entree was perfect too! This restaurant is one of my favorites!
Love the location ! Ambience /interior design is great . Waiters superb !
I had the brunch special, 3 courses. My friend and I ate outside. Small table. If you can, eat inside which has nice tables and a lot of atmosphere. Lovely interior.
C'est magnifique. Tres bon, surtout la crème brulée.
One of my all time faves in NY. I live in the neighborhood so I go there often. I brought a friend from out of town and she loved it. Good food, good service, great ambiance, outdoor seating. What’s not to like? I had the lobster ravioli and it was delicious.
Heard the calves liver was excellent, and it was. Ordered medium rare and it was cooked perfectly . Service was excellent, decor was a bit funky, very quiet, great for a romantic dinner.
Piano player excellent.
Beautiful, romantic restaurant. Good pianist. Great pork chop.
Chez Josephine was an amazing find. The space is intimate and lovely, soft music playing. The staff was outstanding, attentive without feeling rushed. I had a French margarita before our meal; it crisp and perfectly shaken. My shrimp and risotto was delicious and presented beautifully. I had the panna cotta for dessert. It was the perfect ending to a very enjoyable meal.
Wonderful little place. They had a lunch restaurant week special which I did not expect.
