The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

    Very Charming place. Ambience very good especially with the piano player, food excellent, except the desert, we had profiteroles, awful. Overall really nice place.

    I had high expectations because this place was recommended to me. The wine was good and dessert was excellent. The appetizer and main course is where it lost points. The shrimp cocktail I had could have been cleaned better for the price you pay and I found the duck one of my favorite foods to only be average. Service was good.

    Four friends for lunch before a matinee. Chose the fixe prie menu for 30 dollars solid choices (pay, potato leek soup, beet salad, coq au vin, steak frites, poached sole). Everything was prepared well and deliciously done. Nice ambianc. Very good value.

    Went for a late dinner after seeing a show and had a great time. Food and service were terrific and we never felt rushed. We lingered until closing. Our server Lana was wonderful and made the event even better. Can’t wait to go back!

    The food was superb, with the $45 prix fixe an excellent value — I had steak frites with a beet salad to start and cheesecake for dessert. Service attentive, but unobtrusive. A wonderful evening.

    Pretty sure the waiter was racist we waited extremely long to just get our order then others came after us was served received food before us i will never go there again and to discourage anyone of color from going

    We made the mistake of sitting outside. It was loud , smelly (weed, BO from bums, vehicle exhaust) and we got solicited. NYC has really gone down.

    Set menu was great value for money and delicious. Good wine list and delicious cocktails. A true hidden New York gem.

    My party of 6 went for Easter lunch. The service was subpar because it seems they were understaffed. The food was wonderful but it was difficult to enjoy because of the poor service. I would love to go back for dinner because I know this place is amazing and want to support such a meaningful establishment.
