Outstanding all around. Wonderful brunch menu and incredibly priced. Full bar. Excellent service. Really outstanding food! Enjoyed the lovely setting, the comfortable pace and the feeling of being cared for. Everything was timed perfectly and presented beautifully... Thank you Manuel and Team for a wonderful afternoon... We’ll be back.
The food was good, the service was very attentive and the atmosphere was very nice. We had a nice evening and they had a live piano playing which we did appreciate. We enjoyed the cozy table with enough space so we felt safe. We would return.
Excellent service and a nice surprise to have live piano music
A New York gem, with a real French bistro menu and atmosphere.
We went for brunch. It was superb. There was a live pianist. The food was great and the service attentive without being intrusive. There were very few people there, which was nice in terms of COVID... but baffling. This place deserves to be swamped
Always a great meal, relaxing environment and the piano music was perfect l!
It was the perfect setting
Wonderful a usual. Always a treat.
Excellent. I used to go there 20 years ago. It still has that wonderful, unique charm.
Great staff and great for birthday
Great place to celebrate our anniversary!
We had brunch and it was exceptionally good: rapport qualité-prix exceptionnel, as the French would say. The food and service were excellent, the price was very reasonable, the space is super--we had an outdoor table, but opted to take a window-side table inside, as no other tables were inside--especially inside, which is pretty and, for brunch, has life piano music. Truly a treat
Great place. Great service.
Food was great. They've got accordion player! (⊙o⊙)
Always a nice experience and with live accordion music feels like you in Paris.
Wishing all the best to the staff and management.
The atmosphere, service, live music, and decor are wonderful (truly top notch). Unfortunately, the food is very very bad. I had a very rubbery NY strip steak and a very insipid wild rice. The duck was also not very good. The dishes need to be updated as they are old and flavorless. The quality of the ingredients also leave much to be desired. It is s shame that this place, having a fantastic history and a wonderful atmosphere, is not spearheaded by a chef that can do it justice. I will not be going again.
Lovely experience- great great service.
I LOVE CHEZ JOSEPHINE. By far one of my favorite little restaurants in Manhattan.
We must keep the memory of Josephine Baker alive for all future generations.
My fish dinner with vegetables was very good. I wished that potatoes or rice were served with the meal. The bread did not seem fresh but everything else was fine. The crab cake with greens was wonderful although for the price of $18.00 I thought there would be two crab cakes because the cakes were small. The staff was accommodating with warmth and very friendly. I was given a large and beautiful drawing of Josephine Baker and champagne. We were serenaded by a soloist playing great accordian music.
The food and drinks were delicious. The staff was very attentive and made it a night to remember.
Enjoyed our evening listening to live accordionist and conversing with 3 French speaking
Seating is a limited and just hope Chez Josephine will survive the Pandemic!!!
We will be back!!!
Best restaurant in New York
A one off! And absolutely the best. The addition of a bistro accordionist was a fantastic idea!
Not the best place for outdoor dining and the food was quite expensive.
With the covid precautions, me and my date were very concerned when we arrived no tracking was confirmed or offered. We were sat at a table, and given menus from a table where previous patrons were seated. No hand sanitizer, or cleaning between patrons was seen.
When it came to the food it was disappointing, my girlfriends French toast had mold on the fruit. This ruined our experience, I had the trout which was mediocre.
Their mimosas were enjoyable. I will not be returning
It was nice to go back to Chez Josephine and celebrate mu friend's birthday. You can't go wrong with Chez Josephine.
It was wonderful to see our old friends in our favorite theatre district restaurant. The only thing missing was theatre!
Great little place with a fun, old time speakeasy feel. We opted for the 3 course menu with dessert, and were not disappointed. We were met with very friendly staff, and after a bit of confusion with the menu, were treated to a very nice array of food. While seated, there was a piano being played in the background, and it made the ambiance that much better. There were hardly any people there as everyone was running in fear of the dreaded COVID-19, and I would imagine that anyone wishing to eat there and experience it for themselves will need reservations.
We go to Chez Josephine all the time. It is charming "old-time" New York and always a wonderful experience.
This was my first time dining at Chez Josephine. The occasion was my mother’s birthday. The service was great, the food was excellent, and the ambiance was spectacular, especially since visiting Paris is on my mother’s bucket list. The waiter served her cake with a candle and the piano player played ‘happy birthday’ and everyone sang happy birthday to her. It made the evening special!
The filet and scallops were delicious. Loved the live piano music. Really nice, relaxed atmosphere.
As someone who knew the restaurant's late co-founder, Jean-Claude Baker, I have had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant many times and of recommending it to others--who always reported it with high marks. The location, on Theater Row, and the wonderful paintings and images of J.B. herself would make the establishment a delight. However, the fare--which, in my humble opinion, has gotten tastier and more creative over the decades--makes every visit a joy. That it is also affordable, for a mid-price Manhattan restaurant, makes it truly remarkable. My only quibbles are that we were seated next to the piano and so weren't able to hear one another in conversation (Of course, how would the restaurant know that my friend was visiting from Israel and that she and I hadn't seen one another for some years?) as well as that on just one occasion in the spring have I been able to find the superb vichyssoise. Even so, this last visit, my companion and I were quite happy with the salmon and pheasant pate appetizers and the veal entree--not to speak of the baked apple with fantastic ice cream. (Nearly no place else in New York can one find a baked apple in this century). Co-owner Jerry Baker stopped at the table to introduce himself and to fill in a little of the restaurant's history, which Jean-Claude hadn't shared when he visited my dance history class at Barnard to speak about J.B. Mr. Baker also had a copy of Jean-Claude and Chris Chase's excellent biography "Josephine: The Hungry Heart," which I'd been happy to review on its publication for the Times. After dinner, my friend and I went to see "Come from Away," a show that delighted us and that, surely, J.B. herself would have loved. Thank you, Chez Josephine!!
Reliable as always
When I'm in the city to see a show this is my go to restaurant! It's my best kept secret
even though I tell every one how special it is. The staff are welcoming the food is outstanding and the piano man entertains. Thank You again Chez Josephine always great dining with you.
The food was good but the soup could have been hotter. The chicken was tasty but a little tough. The service was excellent.
Lovely and Parisian in every way. Definitely go!
Chez Josephine is WONDERFUL. THE SERVICE, FOOD and ATMOSPHERE ALL deserve 5 stars!
Wonderful authentic traditional French cuisine. Splendid decor. The prix fixe dinner meal is excellent value. Will go back!
Their prixe fix dinner menu never disappoints! There is always something for everyone (vegan, carnivore, pescatarian) and service always prompt without being rushed (unless you are going to the theatre!).
We had a 7:30 show and too the opportunity to try Chez Josephine. The food was good, but not outstanding. Service was decently attentive and fast. The live piano is nice, but much too loud; hard to have a conversation.
