Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

I absolutely loved the atmosphere here. The piano player was great and the service was outstanding.
Food was excellent, atmosphere was lovely and the live piano p,Ayer was a real treat. Waiters were pretty indifferent but efficient.
A true gem that merges many things that my wife and I love, wonderful food.cocktails and ambience––along with beautiful piano music (tonight by Joseph Douglas) in beautifully decorated homage to the best of theatre, Paris and NYC that Lady Josephine embodied. C'est Magnifique!
Great night in a fantastic atmosphere- would highly recommend to all. O tea
Food and service was good and timely. It works well pre-theater. However music was loud and made conversation difficult.
My friend recommended this place and I came with my family to have my birthday lunch. The restaurant is nice, the food is good, but I was very disappointed with the service. The server Andy was not nice and friendly to us at all. He didn't really pay any attention, even though the restaurant was not busy, and I felt like we were unexpected guests at his house. I didn't think that I would receive that kind of service at this type of restaurant, to be honest.
Mon Dieu! What has happened to poor Josephine's place since her relative-owner died and someone new took over?? It certainly looks like the same charming place it always was, there is still a piano-playing singer adding to the noise level, although sitting in certain areas made the din bearable. But the food? Tasty enough fish but plopped on a chunk of much over-cooked french green beans. My friend's pork chop was barely chewable. We started with a rock of a biscuit-like roll and needed numerous attempts to get a somewhat less stale piece of bread served with not enough butter for the two of us. My friend's coke with lemon was finally served near the end of the meal despite many requests. And that doesn't count the attempts to get a waiter's attention as they whizzed by without so much as a "How is your dinner?" or "May I get you something?" They were committed to not making eye contact with diners. A mess of a meal and loss of one of the few decent culinary outlets in the west 42nd Street theater area. C'est dommage!
Food was tasteless, shrimp overdone. Risoto was bland. Needed salt or parm. Not enough pesto and shrimp needed steak knives to cut through.
The lobster crepes and lamb chops were delicious. The wait service was uneven as if they were short staffed that night . Will be back.
Amazing atmosphere and great food at a very reasonable NYC price. Nice piano music and live singer too on the Monday we went.
Staff went out of their way to make our special occasion very memorable.
Everything was sensational, as always. It made my birthday very special.
Had an excellent meal. Pate appetizer, roast duck entree, glass of good pinot noir. A very good jazz tried performed. Lovely evening!
It was awesome. We will be back next time we are in the city and will be recommending it to all our friends and family.
This restaurant was exquisite. The food and service was top notch. I especially loved the French club vibe of the decor. The piano player was a nice touch as well.
We came to New York for Thanksgiving (we’re from England) and chose Chez Josephine for our Thanksgiving meal. Food and service were good and the live piano added a great atmosphere.
Staff are friendly and polite and our meal arrived in good time.
I can't believe that i ate everything on my plate. The turkey was superb. The entire experience was great. Always Love Chez Josephine
One of my favorite restaurants in NYC. Josephine’s is a colorful gem of sparkling vintage atmosphere and delicious fine dining. The staff remains as warm and welcoming as ever, keeping the spirit of Josephine Baker and family alive and well.
My daughter and I decided at the last minute to book Chez Josephine for Thanksgiving lunch, which turned out to be an excellent decision. We were welcomed warmly and the restaurant had a festive atmosphere. The food was very good: my daughter had the butternut squash soup, which she said was excellent, followed by a tasty standard Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings - a huge plateful, much of which was taken home for next day's lunch. I started with escargots, no shells, so easy to eat, in a rich garlic and herb buttery sauce, and followed with scallops served with asparagus and truffled potato puree, all delicious. We both had tart tatin for desert, sweet and sinful. We greatly enjoyed the pianist who played many favorite songs. Service was attentive and friendly and we had a most enjoyable visit.
Our favorite theater district restaurant. I didn’t give it 5 stars this time because they didn’t automatically serve their delicious popovers, the piano player was 20 minutes late, and the pork chop has a bit too much fat on it. We still love the ambiance, the service, and the live music.
As always, a comfy, colorful place to unwind after theater. Food is bistro fare, done well. Service very accommodating. Piano lovely but if you want to discuss the pay you’ve just seen sit toward the front.
Lovely atmosphere. Attentive service. Delicious food.
Getting together with cousins visiting. They love nyc but had not been to CJ. We met for brunch and it is now a favorite of theirs. Music was lovely, Prix fixe was perfect for the occasion along with bellinis. I see a lot of plays on Theatre Row, I’ll be in more often.
A unique and wonderful place with beautiful decor, excellent food and a step into European charm!
A throwback in time but we loved it. Felt like being in Paris in the 30s! Service and food very nice with a varied menu which we liked. Piano added to the ambiance and of course, being next to the theater we attended was perfect.
An NYC institution, always fun, with consistently excellent food and service.
We always love Chez Josephine, and enjoy the atmosphere & stellar waitstaff. We often get Elvira’s fried chicken - unfortunately, this time, it was extremely dry (usually always juicy & yummy). Hopefully, it was just a one-time mishap.
Pre theater and always a good choice. Delicious food in a beautiful setting.
Always great with great atmosphere!
Always enjoy dining at this temple to Josephine Baker with it's posters, portraits, piano music & very good food.
Always love Chez Josephine. The piano music adds such nice ambience. The food is always delicious and the service is impeccable.
This was our second time dining at Josephines. We have decided that whenever we go to a broadway show we are dining at Josephines. Everything was fantastic!
We’ve enjoyed Chez Josephine for years. During fall and winter months they have a charcuterie entree that includes a pigs knuckle which never disappoints. The delicious salmon entree was one of the most generous portions we’ve seen. Even the lovely Brouilly wine, served perfectly chilled, was exceptional.
Chez Josephine never fails to be a wonderful night on the town! Great ambience, very professional service, and exquisite food. We love the special added touch of the live piano music. Chez Josephine is truly a NYC gem!
Like entering a bygone era of New York that must be visited
Our second visit and it was just as wonderful a dining experience as the first . I had the Fall Prix Fixe meal of Figs wrapped with Prosciutto, Garlicky Mussels and an apple tart. Every course was delicious and the service is prompt. Fun atmosphere and the pianist was superb. A great pre-theater option.
We were a bit crowded, with diners sitting both sides of us. I had the filet mignon, which was perfect, however my husband had the lamb shank which had barely any meat on it. I liked the ambiance of the place but next time I'd try to get one of the tables off by itself rather than lined up next to one-another.
Had a very enjoyable evening at Chez Josephine. The atmosphere is excellent and the piano player was super. The food as good and what I expected. A fun evening.
Wonderful time. Loved meeting former owners brother and new owner. Both were lovely, charming gentlemen.
Confusion on arrival regarding my 530 reservation. Seated 20 minutes late. Food and service was fine.
