Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Always great with great atmosphere!
Always enjoy dining at this temple to Josephine Baker with it's posters, portraits, piano music & very good food.
Always love Chez Josephine. The piano music adds such nice ambience. The food is always delicious and the service is impeccable.
This was our second time dining at Josephines. We have decided that whenever we go to a broadway show we are dining at Josephines. Everything was fantastic!
We’ve enjoyed Chez Josephine for years. During fall and winter months they have a charcuterie entree that includes a pigs knuckle which never disappoints. The delicious salmon entree was one of the most generous portions we’ve seen. Even the lovely Brouilly wine, served perfectly chilled, was exceptional.
Chez Josephine never fails to be a wonderful night on the town! Great ambience, very professional service, and exquisite food. We love the special added touch of the live piano music. Chez Josephine is truly a NYC gem!
Like entering a bygone era of New York that must be visited
Our second visit and it was just as wonderful a dining experience as the first . I had the Fall Prix Fixe meal of Figs wrapped with Prosciutto, Garlicky Mussels and an apple tart. Every course was delicious and the service is prompt. Fun atmosphere and the pianist was superb. A great pre-theater option.
We were a bit crowded, with diners sitting both sides of us. I had the filet mignon, which was perfect, however my husband had the lamb shank which had barely any meat on it. I liked the ambiance of the place but next time I'd try to get one of the tables off by itself rather than lined up next to one-another.
Had a very enjoyable evening at Chez Josephine. The atmosphere is excellent and the piano player was super. The food as good and what I expected. A fun evening.
Wonderful time. Loved meeting former owners brother and new owner. Both were lovely, charming gentlemen.
Confusion on arrival regarding my 530 reservation. Seated 20 minutes late. Food and service was fine.
My favorite place for Brunch in NYC. Reasonable price fixe menu with great selections. The ambiance is lovely and the restaurant is quite cozy. The staff are accommodating and friendly. Pianist during Sunday Brunch is fun but not too loud and doesn't impede conversation if you aren't sitting next to the piano. We will go there again.
They need to refine their menu and grace. Food was far from what it was. Service was attentive but abrupt. Singer and piano so loud it made difficult to talk. Not what it once was.
Old world charm in a nyc institution. Always a delight to dine and listen to wonderful piano.
An amazingly cozy yet lively shrine to the great Josephine Baker. Delicious french food, beautiful decor and live music.
Amazing - everything was good the menu is full with great choices. Live music - what a treat.
It was good meeting the manager and chatting about the past.
Love love love
Chez Josephine is one of my favorite restaurants in New York. I love half a dozen of their entrees, the service is awesome (they knew without my prompting that I’d just celebrated my birthday and brought a bd dessert accompanied by the piano), and every meal is fun. I lived introducing myself daughter Lily to the restaurant in this trip.
I have always loved this restaurant, and I hope to again, but I had a very disappointing experience this past Saturday night. I arrived on time for a 6 p.m. reservation, but there were perhaps 20 people standing and blocking the narrow entrance into the restaurant. Apparently, we were all waiting to be seated, but no one was helping us. I eventually made my way to the front of this group, but the person there who usually seats us said he had nothing to do with it and directed me to someone else, who promptly disappeared and left us all waiting, with no information. I finally was seated, almost a half hour late, which was a problem given that we had a show to catch. However, things were so disorganized that I never got my reservation checked off, and then received a message from Open Table saying that I had never shown up. All in all, it was a very frustrating experience.
What could beat real French onion soup and red snapper for main course. We sat under a poster for Josephine Baker. Dinners near us were polite and jovial. It made for a festive occassion prior to Yiddish Fiddler on the Roof.
Very good food and great ambiance
Super cute. It was tight, but expected from a NYC restaurant on 42nd st. Had lamb which was a bit gamey but also ordered escargot which was delicious. Dessert was perfect and piano guy was wonderful as expected. Will come again soon!
Very good as always. Table was ready, prix-fix was very good and fast. Have never seen skate wings fully deboned before! Great!
A very lively place and the owner is an absolute gentleman! I will remember this experience always 😊
Food interesting and tasty
Quiet piano music pleasing
Service was very good
Course more gluten free options
This is a fabulous restaurant for pre and post theatre but I was very disappointed by dessert. It was my birthday and I asked for the profiteroles without the ice cream but instead they brought me a bowl of fruit. Not what I asked for and it ruined the experience for me.
Love this place! Never had a bad meal here.
This is our favorite restaurant in the theatre district--and also the venue of our first date. Our heart is there. The food is lovely, the ambiance is funky and what a history! Love, love, love...
Great food, service and piano player! Combination makes for a festive event every time we dine at Chez Josephine. Perfect for pre-theater or anytime.
Excellent! Absolutely love this restaurant. I decided to take some clients for lunch here. Clients loved the food, ambience and service and although they are from Wisconsin they added it to their list as a restaurant to come back to next time they are in town.
The owner Manuel is always very inviting. Greets everyone with a smile and when you walk in you always feel welcomed.
Food was ok, good service and nice music. Very nice decor and history.
This was such a classic New York experience; my friend and I enjoyed our meals and our dining and chatting was accompanied by piano playing that wasn’t too loud and which contributed to the fun classic atmosphere. Plus my fish was fresh and delicious - it was skate (very French!) Lots of fun and easy to go quickly next door to Playwrights Horizons for a great theater experience as well.
Nothing really unique about the food. Just OK. I would not come back.
A lot of small details that will add or drop value to it, to start with the butter was hard and cold, not asking for drawn butter but if you’re giving it with bread I expected to be soft, onion soup was ok, nothing over expected, patê tasteless and garnish was whatever you can buy in the supermarket, piano music was great, wine selection was ok if you don’t want to spend on wine, we went there because my wife wanted french food, but according price-quality-value, should be better places.
Only good detail they sent us an anniversary dessert, not the best apple pie i ever had but was ok.
We took the kids to chez josephine in between the 2 part harry potter and the cursed child. We enjoyed explaining who she was, ate a great meal and enjoyed the live pianist.
The gentleman who seated us, grudgingly seated us at our requested table in a near empty restaurant and asked where we were from. Never really understood how that was relevant.
Service was sluggish - ketchup had to be requested multiple times before we got it.
Coffee was tepid, most likely an earlier pot was warmed up and served.
As always this venue is inviting with a varied and moderately priced menu . Only negative is the restrooms are up a steep flight of steps and therefore not accessible to many.
A lovely pre-theater brunch spot. Consistently good food and service and decor is a joy. Music accompanies your meal.
The service was very good and we received our meal quickly which was great for pre theater dining. The only issues: the piano player is too, too loud. People were asking to switch tables farther away from the piano and we were 3 tables away and could not have any conversation. The bathroom is up a long, steep flight of stairs—-no handicap access , so be aware. The food was very good, but a bit high in price.
