Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Party of four- enjoyed our dinner, as usual. Some had beet salad, crab cakes, smoked salmon, bass and duck. All was very good! Would like a bit more glaze on the duck, and although wild rice should be “al dente”, I believe another minute of heat would greatly enhance the rice texture. It is extremely hard. The endive salad is always delicious, but we were disappointed that there was almost no dressing on it. Don’t know what happened. The staff is wonderful and very attentive! We really appreciate how accommodating they are, and friendly! The ambiance is also very special! Decor and pianist is perfect! Still one of our favorite places!
Wonderful sunday brunch. Prix Fixe was great! Ambiance cant be beat, the live piano music, the décor.
Excellent food, service, and ambience.
We have been here several times and except for one instance have had good experiences here. It was the first visit for my sister and her husband and they were very impressed with the food and the service. It always seems to be crowded which can be a drawback and sometimes the piano music can be overwhelming.
Always perfect. Our favorite NYC restaurant.
Lobster bisque was delicious. Chicken breast entree was creative and well seasoned. Bar seating was uncomfortable with little leg room and getting bumped into by guests entering and leaving the restaurant.
So Good. The Prix-Fixe is great. The drinks are great. The staff is great. The music is great. The crowd loves the place as much as we do.
The piano was way too loud. Granted we sat near if, but half the front dining room is near the piano. There is a way to modulate. The player was banging the keys. He can play well so why the banging?
the food and service was awesome ,as was the pianist that night
Great restaurant to listen to piano music and singers. Quiet after the theater crowd exits. Price fix dinner is a true bargain. Ample portions, nice selections. Very delicious. Wait staff excellent.
I have written several times about the noise level in this wonderful small restaurant. The piano music is too loud and the extra speakers with the singer (not good) is intrusive and unnecessary. If they insist on having a piano player, the music would be much more appreciated if it were background and not miked. Nor does the singer need to be miked so that the entire place resonates with really bad singing. At least if part of the place could be a bit more isolated from the music it would give patrons a choice: we want to be able to talk to each other or we don't really care to hear what our table companions have to say, so let them be drowned out by loud singing and playing.
Wonderful evocative atmosphere and excellent food and service
Josephine is one of the only restaurants I’ve been to that gets better year after year. We had a lunch of omelettes but the menu is extensive and the food is delicious. Also, the service and manager are great.
Very nice intimate, eclectic atmosphere with excellent piano playing in the background. Prices were extremely reasonable for NYC dining and menu offered varied selections. We found our waiter to be very pleasant, but not very attentive despite restaurant not being full with pre-theater diners. Would return again, though.
What a wonderful dinner! And the piano music really made it a special evening.
What a romantic place for dinner. Lovely piano music, a corner table for two. Perfect for our anniversary. Delicious rack of lamb! A special small intimate restaurant. Will be back!
Aside from being seated by the door, everything was pleasant.
We go to NYC about once a year so it is always a special occasion when we go. We want good food and we found that at Chez Josephine
An truly unique experience in NYC. The restaurant has charm and history. Unforgettable!
Everything was good and the wait staff was attentive. It was very busy when we were there and iyou had to talk loud in order to be heard. This restaurant is a favorite amongst the pre and post theater crowd. They are known for their creme brûlée and it was very good.
Just perfect , food service
No waiting never rushed .
The restaurant was very cold inside. Restrooms were upstairs up several steps. Tough for an older person which we are not. The service was just ok.
Valentine’s Day dinner was a prix fixe menu. Some things like mashed potatoes tasted frozen. We turned back one dessert because it tasted like some garlic had fallen into it. Otherwise was ok. I understand that night is a doozie for restaurants.
Jean Claude is gone but not forgotten in this temple to his adoptive mother. A great choice pre or post theater.
My wife and I have been going to New York at least once a year for 27 years and we start every trip with dinner at Chez Josephine the first night in town. It is a unique setting, the food is always spectacular, the service is fantastic and we wouldn't consider changing.
Dinner here is a delight, the theme is vibrant, live piano music and service was just right. great place to bring visitors or someone wanting a let typical New York experience.
Welcomed early. Took advantage of Restaurent week.. choices still interesting.
After theatre dining. We saw a play from the late 60’s and transitioned to Chez Josephine for a French 40’s atmosphere. The piano music was divine-extensive play list and well played. (I should have practiced as a child). French Onion soup was exquisite. Lobster salad (half size was plenty) All in all a great evening. This was our second vid to Chez Josephine and we will be back.
Excellent! We loved the food and ambiance. So convenient to drive in from NJ.
Beautiful space and music but service standards need an overhaul. Absolutely no personality from anyone. Every time the server or busser came to the table (from greeting to dropping the check) felt like a task and we were clearly annoying them. They felt like they didn’t want to be there or they were annoyed by our presence. Would dine again simply for the ambiance and to try more food...Though the service was far from deserving the gratuity left. A smile and a thank you goes a LONG WAY
Wonderfol experience food delicious. Thank you all . Wait staff very attentive
Warm and cozy atmosphere; friendly service; live piano! Feels very French!
We are frequent users of Chez Josephine. As usual, food was good. The Sea Bass special was fresh and very tasty. Wine list is also excellent.
Lovely restaurant with references to Josephine Baker. You could pick this restaurant up and set it down in Paris and it would fit in perfectly. Delicious food, excellent wine list and outstanding service
OUTSTANDING, Highly recommend the restaurant, service is excellent, staff courteous and helpful
Everything was prefect!
We had brunch before attending a show at a nearby theatre. I had a farmer's omelet; my companion opted for the prix-fixe brunch, primarily for the delicious-looking profiterole dessert. The food was fine, nothing super-exciting but quite good. We found the service somewhat unresponsive. There was a very large party in the dining room, and we understood that most of the waitstaff capacity was involved with them. But we had found before the party came in that the waiters were already not attentive. The location of the restaurant is good, and the ambiance is attractive; I might well return but would have to weigh the possibility of poor service before I do so.
First time - good experience - rated food a 4 - mixed green salad was bland considering price - salmon good need option for salmon accompaniment instead of greens - will return and would recommend
Food was just so-so. The restaurant was somewhat empty when we arrived for a five o'clock reservation, yet service was painfully slow.
The server was not friendly (this is the second time I have the same server so now I can say it). Except the service, this place still has a lot of charme.
