Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

This is one of the few mom and pop type restaurants that has survived in mid town Manhattan. We have been coming here for over 30 years and it is basically the same. We love the ambiance which is warm and inviting and the service was excellent. The food was good but not outstanding.
Never before have I been asked to change tables while our meal was underway to make room for a larger party. I found this shocking and unacceptable.
We tried this on a recommendation from an acquaintance. Though nice, we probably will not return, as we have other favorites when attending a play in the low 40's of the theater district.
Great ambience. Good food. Service was a little slow, feel like our main course was forgotten about. My eggs Benedict has been under the warmer for a while. Had asked for sauce on side, but it was on the eggs. Did not have time to return. Food was good though.
It's always a delicious dinner!
Excellent food as always. Lots of choices. Good wine.
Cozy and welcoming. Lovely music. Good ambience.
Our experience at Chez Josephine was superb! It was such a pleasure to be in such a celebratory space with a superb positive vibe. It really has an intensely New York City feel with an overlay of European charm. We look forward to returning.
This is my 3rd or 4th visit and I will come again. Love the atmosphere, the friendly and efficient service, the comfort food, and the wonderful live entertainment that really makes it a special place. Has a total "feel good" vibe including the limited bar area.
We enjoyed the meal and experience at Chez Josephine as a special treat
Ate here years ago and thought it was much better in the past . Would not go back
It was my birthday
The food was superb, and the service was friendly and prompt. We were a bit close to the piano, and so it was a bit loud for us. The tables are very close together, so if you're not in a friendly mood, go somewhere else. The restrooms are up a flight of narrow steps. Not sure if they have an accessible one on the main floor, but they need one.
Great for pre-theater
Pre Theater Dinner its always great visiting Chez Josephine I highly recommend this restaurant
Excellent option pre Sunday matinee. Fantastic service, reasonable prices for area and great food. Would go again.
Great Birthday dinner before going to see a Broadway show. Loved the piano music and food was fabulous. Service was excellent. Will be back!
Food was delicious and a wonderful surprise since we had no expectations. The big bonus was the terrific pianist who played such beautiful, nostalgic songs.
Perfectly charming. The general manager and the server could not have been more accomodating! Wonderful dining experience
Chez Josephine was incredible! The wait staff, Manuel, decor, food... all perfect! Thank you for a great evening!
Delightful restaurant with excellent , beautiful served by an excellent staff. From the time we were greeted at the door to our departure, we had an enjoyable experience
Chez Josephine is one of the best restaurants in New York City!
Wonderful choice. One of my favorites in the midtown area.
Food was great! Service was excellent.
Always a wonderful experience!
A wonderful French bistro, great for a pre- or post-theatre dinner or a romantic date. This restaurant, formerly owned by Jean-Claude Baker, the adopted son of Josephine Baker remains in good hands several years after his passing. There is a live piano playing jazz standards; and the food, atmosphere and service are all excellent.
Great place with amazing ambiance! Love it :)
Our favorite place for a romantic dinner in NYC. Highly recommend!
It was a wonderful experience. The food was outstanding along with the service. We will be back!
Great atmosphere, servers were very friendly, and got us in and out in a timely but I rushed manner in order to make a show at 8 pm
Food was okay. I had the fried chicken and my wife had the spaghetti. I also had a crab cake as an appetizer but it was very Bland. The problem is that the tables are so close together, one feels quite claustrophobic. The lady sitting next to us had strong perfume and I couldn't even smell what I was eating. The service was also poor. The first time they filled our water glasses was when they brought the check. In the Theater District, there are so many other choices. We cannot recommend this restaurant.
Fantastic food at a surprising price, wait staff very mindful of pre-theatre dinners, and attentive without hovering. Definitely new go to in Theatre District.
As always, great service and food in a wonderfully atmospheric setting.
We were visiting from New Orleans and noticed that Chez Josephine had live music so made reservations. The food was great, the staff friendly and efficient, and we loved the piano player. Not to mention the Josephine baker themed decor! We had such a good time that we went back the next night.
Worst Lamb Shanks we have ever had. No flavour and Salmon was over cooked, how can you cook gravy with no flavour for the steak. Do not recommend it for the price.
this is taking too much time. qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq
Boy was Josephine’s disappointing. We went for pre dinner , and they did get us out in dinner. The food was fine, but very imaginative or inspiring. The service was abysmal, I would almost say downright rude. To top it off the food rating is a B - there is no reason Togo anywhere that does not get a A. Not what I remember from years ago.
This is absolutely my favorite restaurant in the City - and I go to all of them. But when I have theater tickets, especially ones next door, I am at my CJ. I miss Jean Claude very much but he would be proud of how well everyone is keeping up his traditions of old world hospitality. I especially loved that the host remembered me when I returned after the theater for drinks. He even brought over an extra bar stool. Keep up the good work!
They play piano while you have dinner and fantastic lights and atmosphere , good for date !
Good food, good service. I didn't like piano playing, but that's why a lot of people eat there. Was trying to have a quiet meal
We enjoyed a meal after a Broadway matinee. My husband had lamb chops and I had black striped shrimp. Both dishes were tasty and the serving sizes were ample. The service was attentive but not obtrusive. The decor was dated and dark in the back of the restaurant. It was brighter in the front section.
I would return because the food was good as was the service.
