Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Nice, old school Theatre Dist restaurant that catered to a family pre theatre.
We went there for my daughter's birthday. The service was exquisite, the food delicious, staff very attentive, and they even played 'Happy birthday' on the piano when her dessert came out 😊 A wonderful experience. We'll definitely come back!
Charming "old Paris" feeling for lunch. Loved the Croque Madame. DH really enjoyed Spaghetti Bolognese.
Charming place in a neighborhood not known for its charm. Very good food, but very inconsistent service. We gave ourselves over an hour and a half for brunch before our show and it required longer. Will go back when I don't have to be somewhere.
We loved your piano player & crime brûlée Birthday plate. Thanks!
Would go there again....wonderful ambience (enjoyed the piano player!) and the food was good. The service was outstanding.
I love the restaurant but the live music was too loud.
It’s always a pleasure and a wonderful experience to dine at Chez Josephine.
I like a little noise in a restaurant (piano player/vocalist excellent, conversation levels of other customers agreeable).
Food good. Service slow in an almost empty restaurant.
We had a great time, will certainly return. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Excellent as usual!!!! Who doesn’t enjoy great food, service and music!?!!
I was greeted and seated immediately. Ordered a Bloody Mary not spicy and was told that they use a mix and it is spicy, I appreciated the server’s honesty. Switched to a sea breeze, custom crafted and it was perfect. The farmer’s omelet was nicely plated and delicious. Service is professional and friendly. This is my go to place for brunch and strongly recommend it
Friendly knowledgeable piano player who exhibited his love of music. Waiter was so attentive and appreciated his recommendations. Exceeded my expectations in food presentation. Very romantic.
When we arrived we were given a table immediately and had our choice of being near to or further from the piano. We chose to be close to the piano. The atmosphere was great and evoked a sophisticated French charm.
The food was outstanding and the service wonderful.
I would definitely recommend Chez Josephine to friends.
My daughter and I wanted a memorable dining experience before going to see Moulin Rouge-The Musical on Broadway. I knew I had found the right place when I found this French restaurant.
We both had the Steak Au Poivre both of which were cooked to perfection.
Early dinner reservations were a breeze. The service was on point: professional and there when we needed them and we were never rushed. The prices were very reasonable for a fine dining establishment on West 42nd Street along Theatre Row. The atmosphere was perfect for our upcoming show.
My daughter is a singer and after the meal, she giddily went to the pianist\crooner and asked if she could sing a few songs. This was one of the highpoints of our New York trip. We'll definitely be back the next NYC visit!
Overall the food was very good, tasty, well presented classic French style cuisine. I really enjoy the French onion soup and the crab cakes. The trout almondine that my husband had was also very good. I really liked the look of the room and the live music. It was unfortunate that the restaurant did not have their liquor license renewal. I would have really enjoyed a glass of wine with the meal. I thought the prices were a bit high but this was the case in all fine dining rooms in Manhattan. It is an expensive place to visit.
We enjoyed dining at Chez Josephine.
If you are looking for French food this is not your place. The quality of the meal was clumsy. I was disappointed. The crab cakes, listed as Maryland Crabcakes were anything but. Seemed like false advertising! No seasoning and very little crab.
There was some excuse about not being able to serve liquor because of either equipment failure or license problem.
Chez Josephine is a longtime favorite.
In spite of the fact that we were told upon being seated that unfortunately their liquor license had lapsed and we could not enjoy a glass of wine with our dinner, our disappointed lasted very briefly. Their summer melon soup was so delightful we soon forgot about our wine and enjoyed the escargot and the trout amandine was delicious as was my husband's pan seared calf liver. The staff is charming and professional and we will, as always, look forward to a return visit.
A fabulous experience from start to finish. We dinned al fresco. Started with the escargot and the tuna tartare followed by egg white omelets. We even ended up order a third course of Dijon mussels. They were amazing! Friendly and professional service. Can’t wait to return when we are back in NYC to try the dinner menu.
Great time as usual. The Prix Fixe is great. Always a pleasure.
Great food, good service, really enjoyed the live music
Wonderful pre theater lunch
Excellent food, service and value
Ambiance was incredible along with the music, food was outstanding, and the service impeccable.
Chez Josephine is always my go to for any special occasion. The food is great, the service impeccable, and the ambiance sublime. Admittedly, Jean Claude's absence is keenly felt, but part of me thinks his spirit still lingers by the front door wearing a red Chinese silk jacket and and embrace that made you feel like family.
Can't believe I've never been to Chez Josephine before but it won't be the last time. Loved everything about it!
We loved the decor. I took photos of all the paintings/posters. The pianist was magnificent.
Beyond that, this is one more typical Broadway district place. Average food, uninterested waiters, wait staff running up and down the single aisle between tables -- to the point where one waiter bumped into me so hard that it hurt my shoulder. Then when it came time to leave, that magic hour when guests must have their checks in order to get to the theater on time, it took way too long for me to get mine.
Staff was courteous. Scrumptious and varied menu. The piano player played happy birthday when my dessert was delivered.
Group of 10 for Saturday brunch! Beyond happy with our experience - staff, accommodations and the food! Oh this has to be the best priced brunch for the quality in NYC!
All good. Very accommodating.
our party of 4 had cocktails outside and lunch in the lower dining room. Jari was delightful as our host.
been here before and Chez Josephine lives up to a wonderful experience.
the decor is of the past and one can just envision the 1920 era of Josephine Baker.
food was excellent, especially the sliced duck and the dessert of lemon pastry with raspberry sorbet...magnifiique!!!
Food was good... We had 7pm show...service slow.. Had 5pm reservation and was seated almost immediately because it was still empty .. SO there was no reason that food took so long to get out of the kitchen.. coffees, cappuccino also took much too long to get and we told them to cancel the coffees but they came out with the bill.. BUT, there was no time to have dessert.
THEN THE BILL WAS INCORRECT again..... This is my 2nd time there in about 3 weeks...It's a coincidence that there was, both times...an over charge. 1st time, we had one dessert...they charged us for 2.. Same thing happened last night... over charges...The men caught it, and they had to correct the bill.
Suggestion when you are there I suggest you check your bill thoroughly..Not a good reputation to get.
A shame because food was very enjoyable by all 10 of us, servers all very nice. The piano was fabulous, and very enjoyable... Just check your bill...
My wife, my adult son and I celebrated his birthday. It was a GREAT experience in all respects -- food, service and ambience.
Loved, loved Chez Josephine. I felt like I was in Paris. Went w 5 friends for lunch. Some ordered from prix fixe $29 menu, others from regular menu. All loved their choices. I had the French onion soup, crab cake sandwich w sweet potatoes drys, delicious. I was so full and satisfied that I never ate dinner that night. The place has such a romantic ambience that I'm coming back w my husband soon. Our waiter was very attentive, sweet and handsome. What a lovely place.
Excellent restaurant either great food and service. We have eaten there many times and it is consistently good. Staff is well trained and very accommodating.
Nice ambience, attentive service, good noise as pre-theater diners settled in, large menu with some equally large portions, piano music was lost on us due to table location
This was our first time here and we were all very pleased. The service was excellent and the food was simply delicious! We will definitely return.
Service not attentive
Your chicken pallard was more like chicken Marsala
Served ice cream in “warmed bowl”
No handicapped accomodatations
Steep and very dark stairway to ladies room
No manager available
It was a very pleasant business meal. The place was quiet and the food was great.
Chez Josephine offers good food in an informal but true dining locale just west of the craziness of Times Square. This was our second time at this restaurant, and when we left we knew we would come back again.
We were seated immediately, and the service was consistently attentive but not fawning. Our half bottle of
wine was well-priced and delicious. The appetizers, beet salad and tuna tartare, were fresh and tasty but not spectacular. My wife's duck was better than my crab cakes, but everything came out of the kitchen hot and nicely plated. Within walking distance of most Broadway shows, it was a nice place to chat about a play and enjoy a satisfying meal.
