The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Came here for dinner after a show with a group of 7…the food was very good, ambience great, service very good…piano player was fabulous and not too loud..ravioli app was great as was cheese plate though overpriced,, crab cake was good not amazing, for mains the lobster cassoulet was really great as were the tbone steak, sea bass, etc…dessert was mixed review, basically $15 for each small portion, worst was the black and white mousse, the choc half was ok, the white was kinda yucky, I would drop the white and improve the chocolate…however the chocolate bomb prailinee was very very good…no complaints from crème brûlée options other than small size of the one with sorbet…overall I gave it 4+ stars instead of near 5 because I can’t get past $8 diet cokes that were mini sized (no joke)

We very much enjoyed our evening, with a very good trio and vocalist doing French-leaning chansons and jazz from Baker’s time. The warm old-school environment was charming. Everyone should go - a unique experience!

Chez Josephine has very good eclectic French cafe food, but the real draw is the history and ambiance. The period decor alone is worth a visit. Vive Josephine!

French cozy nightclubs atmosphere, piano and singer in the background (almost not background enough), service attentive and prompt. My fusilli with sun dried tomatoes and wild mushrooms with truffle oil was delicious, the Skate (white fish) perfectly seasoned and cooked.

If I were the owner of this restaurant, I would be concerned. From seating to food delivery, lack of attention to any detail. Took 20 minutes to get any service. From there on, manager and his staff, very unprofessional, didn’t fill water, no salt and pepper, had to ask for bread, while servers and manager drinking at the bar! Food very mediocre, and all came at once. Never came back by to ask how everything was and upon us complaining didn’t even offer to take back the food, offer coffee, etc. When we were leaving, a young female inexperienced server with a horrible attitude, said to the manager, ‘they’re leaving cash!’ No clearcut professionalism what so ever! Manager needs to go! He was too concerned with schmoozing at the bar with his friends.

There is a reason this place is legendary. It is such a intimate "old school" looking room with great artwork. The food was outstanding. My wife raving that the roast duck is best she ever had. wonderful dining experience.

The perfect pre theatre venue just steps from Broadway. From prix fixed entrees to a wonderful array of choices from trout, pasta, seafood risotto, steaks and more, and an extensive wine list, the food options are plentiful and delicious. The best part is the ambiance. Its a throw back to the awesome Josephine Baker’s era with artwork to match. Sit by the piano as the pianist engertIns on multiple instruments accompanied by vocalist pumping out the best French ballads. It makes for a wonderfully unforgettable dining experience.

I adore Chez Josephine. The decor is lush and lovely, the service charming, the food delicious, and brunch and lunch are well-priced, especially for the area. I admit, I don't usually have dinner here, as that's a high price point. But for brunch there is no better in the Theater District!

I was expecting so much more! I had arrived early and ordered a cocktail from the special drinks menu, the idea being that I would have it in hand when my friends got there. Unfortunately, the bartender was slow and I waited a long time for it. It was good, however. My one companion had wine and when the other arrived, she ordered wine as well. I tried to tell the waiter I wanted a glass, but he was gone. I ordered it when he came back for our meal orders. The three of us got light meals--soup for all, a salad, a brussel sprouts side and a crab cake appetizer. The salad and crab cake arrived first. The crab cake was pronounced delicious. The soups then arrived and eventually the brussel sprouts. My onion soup was tepid and the cheese was melted though not browned at all. I got a feeling of being hurried though it was pre theater; dishes were cleared before everyone was finished and my one friend had to stop the last piece of bread from being removed. Disappointing.
