About Chez Foushee
Chez Foushee opened in the Fall of 1989 as a small deli and catering operation offering carry-out and boxed lunches. As business continued to flourish a number of renovations occurred and the entire building was purchased in the Fall of 1995. Located in historic Monroe Ward, just blocks from the venerable Jefferson Hotel, we are situated close to downtown and the Broad Street arts district. Chez Foushee offers lunch and carry-out Tuesday through Friday, as well as dinner every Tuesday through Saturday. We offer brunch Sunday mornings. Our menus change seasonally with an emphasis on fresh, local and sustainable ingredients. On site catering is available for private dinner and cocktail parties. Please inquire about full-service offsite catering.

Chez Foushee Ratings and Reviews
Quiet setting for nice birthday celebration. Unfortunately, parking was a challenge--which is usually the case in that area. Our son, the birthday celebrant, wanted a lunch-size steak but did not find that on the menu. He ordered a "filet-quality" burger from the menu, but he was a bit disappointed. We suggested he ask the waitress to speak to the chef about his entree "wish" but we couldn't get him to do so. Regardless, it was a nice atmosphere for our lunch. Our waitress was a delight!
On of our favorite restaurants. This trip, however, was marred by the actual temperature of the restaurant. The heat would blast on and the room got almost unbearably hot. Noticed people at the other tables fanning themselves also so it wasn't just our table. Did ask the waiter to adjust the heat but it would be somewhat cool for a few minutes then the heat would come on and make it very uncomfortable.
Food is consistently good and the restaurant is very beautiful.
Our dinner was a fabulous seared duck breast with brandied cherry duck au jus and goat cheese polenta. We've been here for brunch several times and finally got there for dinner. It did not disappoint. We live a couple of hours away and this is always a favorite when we come to Richmond.
Dinner with friends for 5 was delightful! Our table was ready when we arrived! The table setting allowed we 5 to sit 2 on each side and one at the end. This arrangement really facilitated conversation and sharing of special cocktails! The Razor Clam special was very good and the French Quarter Bouillabaisse was full of shellfish, excellent! The other entrees, duck breast and filet were very good also as were Lemon Butter Cake and Crème Brule! Coffee was very good, could have offered refill! We'll definitely be back soon!
On the whole, it was a charming experience: warm, inviting decor, excellent service, varied and unique menu. The craft cocktails were distinctive and well executed (I had two Canton Royals--champagne and Domaine de Canton). My five course dinner (fried oyster crustini, crab bisque, Caesar salad, shellfish bouillabaisse, and a warm toffee pudding) largely succeeded. Everything was plated beautifully, prepared correctly, and served in generous portion. The only jarring note? The complete absence of flavor in either the bisque or the bouillabaisse. The entree in particularly was cooked to perfection, but offered no taste whatsoever--in sharp contrast to my other three courses. The texture of the shellfish was faultless, so I can't attribute the absence to inferior ingredients or excessive freezing. But it made for an uneven dining experience.
Would I go back? Very likely. The hits far outweighed the misses, and at least half a dozen other menu offerings competed strongly for my attention as entrees. Just avoid the mollusks.
the turkey in turkey & brie sandwich wasn't of very good quality-more like deli meat at grocery store-disappointing. The omelette special, however, was superb.
Service was very slow; needed another wait person. Had to wait forever for drinks, to order, and bill.
We went for restaurant week. Cocktails were good. Salad delicious. Entrees were on the small side (4 shrimp on the shrimp and grits). My husband had to send his pork chop back. It was too tough. The desserts were big and delicious. The waiter was super; friendly, attentive and very nice. We will go back.
I wasn't able to change my reservation with Open Table from 2 to 1 person until I arrived. They were very nice about seating me next to an outlet so that I could charge my phone. One of the menu choices was "Feed More," a local benefit to feel the hungry. An excellent idea, so I chose one of these three course, prix fix menus for about $29.95. I ordered salad; bouillabaisse; lemon butter cake. Nice, small salad but the entrée was a disappointment. Described by the waiter as a "soupy" entrée, which is what I expected, it arrived as a small appetizer portion with one shrimp; 2 small clams; the rest mussels, 1/3rd of which were empty shells. Stock was excellent, but had been cooked down to the bottom of the dish in a thin layer. I called for the water and suggested that I'd gotten a poor representation of the dish. He returned to the kitchen and added 1 shrimp, saying that this dish was usually $26.95. Cake was nice, but I only wanted a taste of it, and didn't expect this item to be dinner. Difficulty getting service after my complaint. Didn't feel fairly treated.
Very nice restaurant in Downtown Richmond. Looks small from the outside but that is deceptive. Nice interior decor, soft music playing in the background. We were there for lunch. I had the mussels and house cut frites. Both were very good. The sauce for the mussels was tasty and not overpowering. The frites were fresh and hand cut but could have been crispier. My wife had the grilled salmon wit asparagus and an acorn squash pure. All was excellent. The lunch portions were generous and reasonably priced. Our waiter and the hostess were friendly and knowledgeable and service was excellent and not overbearing. We will definitely return.
I would call this my 5/6ths review. We decided to take advantage of restaurant week and selected Chez Foushee. On the menu were three starters, about six
entrees and two desserts. I say 5/6ths review because the tomato bisque(1 &2) were excellent, the salmon(3) was excellent, and the chocolate tortes(5&6) were
excellent. The pork chop(4), was terrible. I've never seen a pork chop 1/2" thick
and it was tough and had gristle. So, 5 out of 6 is good, but the pork chop spoiled
the entire meal. would not recommend this entree. Mgmnt should provide a
pencil and paper for the wait staff to take down the drink and food orders. Nuff said.
Went during restaurant week, so menu was limited but a good value for a meal. Dining companion started with a salad, I finally tried the pimento cheese, what a delight and far cry from the supermarket version. Dining companion had salmon, she thought it a bit over cooked, I found it moist and delicious. I had grilled pork chop with polenta, very tasty. Dining companion chose the chocolate desert, very nice but paled compared to my lemon butter cake, which was a taste of heaven. Jason our server was attentive and knowledgeable.
My husband and I went to Chez Foushee during Reastsurant Week with another couple. Having eaten there for lunch I thought this was a good choice. I am sorry to say that I was disappointed.
There was an unusually long delay for our drinks. We were told that this evening was the Bartender’s first night. There was confusion with our orders during each course.
It appeared that there was confusion in the kitchen.
The portions were very stingy. Of the four entree offerings the pork chop and the salmon were considered very good while the shrimp and grits and chicken fricasse were poor to fair.
The homemade desserts were outstanding!! The space was enchanting and comfortable. The noise level was softer than what I’ve come to expect from an establishment downtown.
I hope this was an “off night” for Chez Foushee.
Friends and I went to Chez Foushee for Richmond Restaurant Week. The food was good, but not spectacular. Cocktails were a bit too strong and not very interesting. The ambiance and the service though were fantastic! I would recommend this place for a nice date night.
