My wife and I along with another couple visited the restaurant on Friday night. We had appetizers, a main course and dessert. The salads were fresh and tasty. For main courses we had risotto, short ribs, filet with a mini cheese soufflé and the bronzini. Everything was delicious. Although we almost never order dessert, it was the highlight. We had chocolate and lemon soufflés... Out of this world good!
Good to know: They only have a couple of booths but if you can get one, they are nice and quiet. Also, if you want the soufflés, you need to order them a day in advance.
The food was truly superb and the atmosphere is gracious and comfortable. It was so pleasant to be able to have a real conversation without shouting over high volume noise. We dined on a Saturday night and it seemed as if the kitchen may have been overwhelmed because it took an inordinate amount of time to receive our appetizers and main course. That was the only negative. Otherwise a wonderful experience and fine food.
Disappointing. Overpriced. Friday night, maybe only 1/3 full. Entrees were slow to arrive and when they did they were not hot. Portion sizes small, although food was well prepared. Not kidding, they only offered one slice of baguette. The evening left us feeling as if we were dining on a sinking ship.
We are semi-regulars at Chef's Station - always coming after a concert in Evanston. We were there on a Sunday evening, and the restaurant was not crowded.
Service was very attentive, but not overly so. The food was excellent. I believe everyone enjoyed their meals with no complaints.
Upscale restaurant in the neighborhood. Not as busy on a Saturday night as it used to be, given the prices that is probably why.
The food was good, but if they want to survive in Evanston, they may have to make some adjustments in their prices to attract a bigger crowd.
Food was just fine, ambiance gloomy, and a rather surly waiter completed the overall impression of this being a tired, sickly and languorous, spiritless place for exhausted worker bees to dine. Even the location appeared gloomy as it is underneath a train station.
We have been to Chef's Station before and loved it. This time was quite different. We arrived at 5:30. We were the first ones in the restaurant. One person in the party wanted to order the filet. We were told another party that came in after us ordered "the last one." He said there was only one available for the evening. You mean to tell me that on a Friday night at 5:30 the restaurant has one filet? Instead the waiter said the chef would make a 14 ounce ribeye instead. The ribeye was very chewy and tough. I had rack of lamb which was OK, but the potatoes tasted very strange. Our other friend had the pork which happened to be very good. Our appetizers and salad were good. I preordered their chocolate souffle with the chef. The waiter knew nothing about the order and said they don't make it on the weekend. I said I talked to the chef and he said he would make it. We did finally get it. And, they made two because of the mishaps with the food. I heard their chocolate souffle was supposed to be outstanding. I've had better. As much as we liked the restaurant before, I don't think we will be going back. This last time wasn't worth the expensive price.
We loved the food, very classic. But, the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. It's not unpleasant, just not trendy or cool. There are a bunch of video cameras on the walls, staring at you in this intimate setting while you try to enjoy a romantic dinner. There weren't too many people in the restaurant for a weekend night. I'm glad we went, because the food was really good, but we really felt uncomfortable with the many video cameras staring us down.
Dining at the Chef's Station is always a treat. The food is wonderfully prepared and showcases Chef Elio's ingenuity and skill. Service is always attentive and knowledgeable. We couple wine from their ample cellar and usually top everything off with a fresh dessert. Overall, the Chef's Station is our "go to" restaurant in the Evanston area. We highly recommend it!
We were so happy with our dinner at Chef's Station last weekend. We were taking someone out for a special business dinner and the food and service did not fail to impress everyone. Our meals were delicious and artfully prepared. The Branzino was excellent, as were the sole special and the risotto special. We did not feel rushed and enjoyed the outdoor seating. We will be back again for a special occasion!
Nestled under the Metra station and a short tunnel, my partner and I celebrated her retirement here. So glad we did for the food alone. Both our entrees, the appetizer, dessert and wine were superb. Even the bread that was delivered hot and with butter was superb. I enjoyed a chefs special of scallops and shrimp while my partner loved the filet mignon. We ate everything heartily.
Our waiter was very experienced and professional but we noticed only two of them for the entire restaurant. Service was a bit slow. The ambience itself is a bit dated and worn out. But if you can let go of that, you won't regret the cuisine!
The menu is unmatched by other fine restaurants. It's creative, unique, and delicious. Service and presentation are impressive. Fine wine list and excellent desserts. Chef's Sation should not be overlooked.An elegant experience. All in our party of four agree.
I appreciate not being rushed, but I felt that the service was excessively slow, with very long gaps without any sustenance. We were seated at 6:30, and we only had drinks after we were there for about 45 minutes. We had no food for the first hour that we were there -- the initial food was the lone piece of bread brought to each of us after 7:30. That single slice was very good, but it seemed a bit chintzy to only offer a single piece. The restaurant was not particularly crowded. Once we were served, the entrees were fabulously tasty. When we had finished, it was 9:30. So, it's a mix -- delicious food, but given that we all had an appetite when we arrived, it felt like it took FOREVER for food to appear.
I came here to dine after a movie. The food overall is very, very good. My foie gras starter and grilled branzino main course were well prepared and very flavorful. My spouses onion souffle and halibut were as well. The wine list has a nice and affordable selection of wines, which is not often a common occurrence in the Chicago area. The service, as others note, is a struggle. Our main server was really trying very hard (I suspect he is a newer employee), while the other staff we encountered were just going through the motions and made no attempt to interact with us other than put things on the table. We will go back and give this place another try since the food is that good!
Chef Station had very nice ambiance. The meal required two and a half hours. I like relaxed but this was simply way too slow. The food was good. This was a special birthday for my wife and they knew this because of the balloons our daughter tied to my wife's chair. They said happy birthday but offered no token dessert to celebrate the occasion. Considering the price point that was the least they should have done. I won't be returning.
We love the Chef Station. The chef makes the best dishes. We even brought our daughter, who doesn't normally adventure out if her comfort food and she was wowed by the beautiful plates and delicious food. The scallops were the best in my opinion, my husband loves the asparagus soup and my daughter loved everything about the filet. We will be coming much more often!
As alway, the food was terrific! Beautifully prepared and served. We have been to Chef's Station many, many times and keep on coming back when we want excellent food prepared perfectly AND when we want to be able to dine in leisure and have conversation with friends. Chef's Station was all that this time. However, the service was VERY SLOW. Never had this happen before and we will chalk it up to a fluke. Don't know what was going on in the kitchen? Hoping this isn't indicative of a trend.
The service was much to be desired. No steak knives were given for our meals. We need to ask for one. We didn't see our waiter. When asked about what cocktails they had our waiter stated to look at the back of the menu. It was difficult to flag our waiter for the check. We needed to ask another waiter for the check. The host that seated us was very helpful throughout the night. The food was good. The appetizer were delicious.
This chef-owned restaurant is a hidden gem. It is in a strange location - under the train station -therefore the name "Chef Station". But, the food is absolutely excellent. Menu is varied - something classic for everyone. Service is great. Quiet conversation possible. We love it!!
Had dinner with a cousin and my wife on a Friday night. The restaurant was busy but we received excellent service from their long time waiter, Mike. I tried to order the meatloaf and he said that you have to order it the day before. Had the lamb chops instead which was very good. Others had a delicious fish while my wife had two very nice starters.
Before our main course, we saw another table served a beautiful lemon soufflé desert. We tried to order it but was told that you had to order it a day ahead. We were disappointed but soon the waiter came back and said the chef would prepare it for us. It was as good as it looked. Loved the idea of the waiter going the extra mile for us
