I'll start by saying the food was very good. There were several problems, though. When our party of 6 arrived, it was Happy Hour. We've been to many at other places and, thus, didn't expect to be served half of a beverage instead of a full glass. When we inquired about this we were told, "Well, it's Happy Hour." Service was a major, major problem. It seemed that people had multiple jobs. The host became our waiter, then our bartender, until another person replaced him to finish making our drinks. Some of us received our appetizers 10 minutes before the others. My entree was "missed by the chef." (I did get my order gratis, but still I was beginning mine when the rest of our party had already finished. I really believe the place has potential - because the food was very good and the prices reasonable. But management needs to do something about the service and also about what people expect during Happy Hour.
Good food and good service for price point. The drinks were delicious as well. They were accommodating with my food allergies which is appreciated
Pan-fried dumplings, sesame chicken and shrimp with cashew nuts were all delicious!
A great find in the neighborhood! Clean, prompt device and Excellent food
Poor service by the wait staff, slow and somewhat disengaged, however the food was excellent and it was a nice restaurant. Good for a date or business lunch/dinner, but casual enough for jeans and sneakers if you’re just walking around the city. Beef with broccoli was great and the other diners joining me also enjoyed their meals.
A very nice Chinese restaurant right near Penn Station that I never knew existed. I am glad that I know about it now. Great food, everything was excellent, I would highly recommend it.
We love the pan fried pork dumplings, shrimp fried rice and and sesame chicken. My husband did not love his shrimp with lobster sauce... the shrimp had tails on them and he did not get a knife to cut them off until he asked several times
Chef Yu never disappoints. The food is always fresh, great service and a great price point. I will be back.
Good Food and a nice evening but restaurant was tooooo cold. Also difficult to find as no sign on door but above your head. We passed three times !
The value is good. But the service is a bit sloppy in terms of getting the orders correct.
The food was inauthentic stuff you might find in your neighborhood Chinese take-out place. The waitstaff was inexperienced and many either spoke little English or were very hard to understand. I would not recommend this place.
I do really like this spot. Great value for the location. The food is always good, not outstanding, but good. I have gotten the General Tso's chicken and the Orang Crispy chicken. Both are good and come with choice of rice as side. I always get the fried rice, which I really like. Gets noisy at lunch, but worth it.
Found this place by accident on the last night of our holiday and wish we’d gone there sooner! Great food, good value, fast service, bookable online. Highly recommend.
A pleasant Chinese dinner in a nice setting with tablecloths. Excellent service. The food was bland but fine- not much garlic in the eggplant with garlic, or much ginger in the soft shell crab with ginger or much pork or pork taste in the pulled pork dish.
This is a great place with fast service, perfect for a casual lunch with a friend.
We arrived early due to pouring rain. We we were seated quickly. The service is fair and efficient. The waitress was not communicative. No suggestions, no additions just robotic. The food arrived rather fast. It was ordinary Chinese food, nothing special. It was however fresh and hot. Our plates were pulled the minute we put the fork down. Still no communication from the server. Overall it was ordinary.
I have been going to Chef Yu for years. Always good.
Was very upset when our waiter charged us for 3 full plates when we just wanted our side of white rice to be veggie fried rice with our entree and didnt even tell us it will be a full size order.
We were okay with them just charging us a $1 or so more for the change but not 3 entree sized veggie fried rice with our entree meals as well. How did he think we were going to eat all that food!
If you don’t have to be somewhere by a certain time then have dinner here. The food is excellent and reasonably priced but the service I awful! We went here before a concert at MSG. It was considered happy hour so we got wine ($5a glass) my Chardonnay was un drinkable. Either the bottle went bad or it was a very bad wine. I couldn’t even say anything about it or ask for a new glass (or my husband a second of his) because aside from dropping of our drinks and meal there was no service to our table. Restaurant had a decent amount of people but there were also a lot of staff working. Had to search for someone to ask for the check. It was insane how non existent the service was! So again food is great- maybe stick to take out or plan to be ignored most of the night and have your dinning experience take at least an extra 30/45min than planned.
Food was very good
We always come here when my boss from China is in
We went to Chef Yu on a Sunday evening for a casual dinner with friends. None of us had ever been there, but we all love Chinese food. Service was a little slow, but the servers were very friendly and helpful. We noticed that the restaurant was apparently very popular with Chinese families —- there were several large groups of families dining there. The food was well prepared and delicious.
Solid place for Chinese and happy hour. Ordered a shrimp/eggplant, beef/snowpea and chicken/broccoli dish as well as pork dumplings - all great. The scallion pancakes were a bit boring, but everything else was tasty, tender and fresh. The mojitos were delicious - great value for happy hour.
I would definitely recommend to anybody it is the best Chinese food and atmosphere I have ever been to. The Host had perfect hospitality it was the most pleasant experience I have had in a long time I would recommend everyone to go to this establishment.
Out with great friends
Very good food , the service is not as bad as all the reviews. Good price .
Chef Yu is my go to Chinese restaurant. The food is delicious. The service is wonderful. It’s a great place to eat for any occasion.
Best hot and sour soup I have ever had. Great service. Great atmosphere. Food flavor was good but the general tso chicken was to tough to eat. I left the plate behind. When I was asked if ok, I told them and he responded, should have gotten the dark meat. Really? Maybe tell people prior. Left hungry.
Loved the pan fried pork dumplings however will not recommend sweet and sour chicken
Nice place, decent drinks and awesome food. Szechuan wontons in spicy chili oil ❤️
Great place to meet up with a friend before heading home at Penn Station.
Chicken and Eggplant and Beef Schezhuan style was delicious.
Great Happy Hour prices.
The food was not great but it also wasn’t horrible. If you are looking for a restaurant with friendly staff, this is not the place.
Good food and service
Great drinks and happy hour with pretty good food. The servers are nice but the service is awful. Once your food comes, they’re pretty much done with you and will never check on you again without you physically flagging down the nearest server which gets pretty exhausting. The problem seems to be there are no designated sections for each server so every server on the floor is serving you but no one is really serving YOU because their attention is scattered throughout the restaurant so everyone is getting the same poor quality of service. Not to mention they have so many servers working at any given time that this shouldn’t actually be a problem. A lot of times they’re not really doing anything but walking the floor and yet they’re still inattentive. All in all, the happy hour and food make the visit worth it but you should be mentally prepared for all the waiting and maneuvers you’ll have to pull just to get someone to come your way.
Mildly empty on a Thursday night around 7pm. We were seated quickly and our order for drink an appetizers were taken. They have a $5 happy hour special with a wide range of drinks from sangria, cosmopolitans, manhattans, mojitos etc. The drinks can be hit or miss with some being overly strong and others very weak.
The food is always good, super affordable and with decent portions for leftovers. Nice to see a budget friendly place by NYPenn.
Horrible service. We had to ask for our water to be refilled; our server never checked on us, and we waited about 10 minutes for the check. To top it off, we asked for to go boxes and they forgot to box up our half eaten order of pineapple fried rice! This is the 3rd time I’ve eaten here and the two other times seemed to be okay but this time was terrible. I won’t be returning.
Food is very good. Service is spotty.
We have been coming to Chef Yu for about 3 years now... We first came on the weekends for lunch, but now we also come for dinner . The food is always consistent and delicious! Service is quick and very pleasant and attentive.
I think the food is the best “ American” Chinese cuisine in the city
Had a great meal. The food is as good but the service was over the top. It was not a busy time but I don't know know if they are super anxious or want to get you out. After telling the server we would let her know when we were ready, it wasn't as though I was sufficating!
