Wow - believe the hype! Chef Geoff's is an exceptional dining experience. The sweet potato gnocchi was better than gnocchi I've eaten at authentic pasta restaurants. The pizza was perfectly cooked and so flavorful. The dinner rolls are fresh and warm. The dessert we got, the cookies and cream cheesecake, was a perfect portion and so delicious. The server wasn't very friendly, but he was attentive and made sure to put a candle in our dessert for my husband's birthday. We definitely plan to return to Chef Geoff's, and highly recommend it to others!
Be prepared for $35 entrees in this neighborhood spot, a haven for American University students on a big budget. The food and beverage selections are wide ranging and the portions are very generous. The chef may be little heavy handed with the salt shaker on the risotto and the tomato based Italian dishes.
Food was poorly prepared. Scrambled eggs were dry. Crab meat was bad, and substitute entrees had to be ordered.
I have been to this restaurant a number of times although admittedly not for awhile. My entree came out cooked to the consistency of shoe leather. To be fair when a manager happened by she did comp it. Positively inedible. Everything else—appetizers and my wife’s entree—was fine. To say our server was inattentive would be to overstate his attentiveness. The restaurant was not that crowded so I have trouble understanding the reason. It is hard to imagine returning.
We had not been to this restaurant in a couple of years. We arrived at 6 PM on a Saturday for our reservation and were surprised to find the place nearly full. Overall, the meal was a bit disappointing. While the calamari appetizer was very good: crispy, tasty, and not at all greasy, the entrees were a bit subpar. In particular, my shrimp and grits, while tasty, were over-the-top soupy and messier than they should have been. The service was swamped by the crowd. And, although we got everything we ordered, it came somewhat haphazardly: too slow at points; too rapidly at others. I would come again, as we have in the past, but perhaps try a less frantic time, say lunch on a weekend or dinner during the week.
I like that owner/ chef Geoff Tracy comes around to check on local regulars. Makes me happy to be there. I like the waiters who care about pleasing. A great place to have in your ‘hood. There’s a wide variety of offerings so it’s easy to repeat visits. The lovely cal house wine is usually good value.
The shrimp and grits were very good. Also the scallops. Also the desserts. Good wine. Good service.
My neighborhood stand-by -- particularly for the wonderful Sunset Special. Their kale salad is a standout of interesting and unusual flavors and textures and their crusted salmon blends a crisp outside with a moist inside, cooked as requested.
As always, the food was very good. The service, which is normally quite good, was this time fairly poor. We had to flag down someone for water, the drinks took way too long (we had already waited quite a while, they didn't appear, and the waiter came by to take our order seemingly oblivious to the fact that we were still waiting). When the food came we had to send one meal back as it was underdone, and again, waited. The rest of the party was finished dinner before that one meal was returned. The manager (or someone) comped a glass of wine, and while a nice gesture, it really didn't help.
Great spot for lunch or dinner, excellent food, great atmosphere where you can actually have a conversation. Service was solid. I had to change reservations due to out of town guests and was graciously accommodated. Lots of choices in DC make this one of your.
We have enjoyed the Chef Geoff burger for years; large and excellent quality meat. This time the price had increased (again) and the burgers were literally half size. The meat wasn't the same quality and the whole thing was served on a small plate.
The restaurant was not crowded, but the service was still extremely slow, and we had to flag down a manager to get our check. Very good food and drink.
Our group of three enjoyed fresh and flavorful dishes, enhanced by pleasant service. We'd happily go there again.
Waitress was a bit slow and inattentive to requests , ie a knife and fork, mustard 😳
Crab cake sandwich was a bit on mushy side, but otherwise food was great. Good sized portions, very attentive waitress. Consistent and reliable.
Service was outstanding, we were running late and they found us a table and then the server expedited our meal so we still got to the theater on time. Very responsive as well as great food.
I tried Chef Geoff’s with my boyfriend for the 1st time on Valentine’s Day. The food was okay but the reason I’m giving it such a low rating however, is because our service was horrible. Granted, it was Valentine’s Day so I understand our server was busy but we had to ask 3 different people over the course of 30 min for a drink menu. By the time we got it, we decided not to order another drink because we waited for too long. Additionally, my bf didn’t get his baked potato that came with his meal. Normally wouldn’t be a big deal but our server didn’t come back to check on us the entire meal so by the time he came back, my boyfriend had finished eating. Also, we we never able to get water refills. It was frustrating because he seemed to be very attentive to every table around us except ours. Overall, was very disappointed with our experience, especially since it was Valentines day.
The evening started out well, with the waiter providing drinks. However, when we put in our orders for the main course dinners, something went wrong. One of the people in my party changed their initial order from a beef dish to a fish dish. We believe that change caused our dinner orders to get bumped back in order of preparation. Furthermore, one of the dinner entrees was never prepared, causing the waiter to re-place the order. All of this delay and confusion ruined Valentines Day for us. to their credit, Chef Geoff did not charge us for one of the entrees.
Crowded for Valentibe's Day, but reservation made through Open Table was honored and we were seated at correct time. As usual, food and service were great. We were not especially hungry, but the wo CG Burgers wrre properly prepared and the accompanying French fries were delicious. We have eaten here nunerous times before and the menu has a very nice variety of both appetizers and main courses. Only "complaint" is later that evening I received an email from Open Table semi-chastising me for not honoring the reservation I had not only made but indeed had the receipt in my hand when the email came through. I wrote back and explained I had been there. Also called restaurant directly and they said, without knowing exactly what had happened, that the hostess probably did not realize it was an Open Tabke reservation. Anyway, highly recommend this quite good neighborhood place. Open Table follow up email absolved me of the "crime."
Excellent food and service. Have never had a subpar experience at Chef Geoff's - one of my go to places.
Good job. Waiter seemed a bit rattled
Comfortable, easy to converse with your party, pleasant, good food and service.
My friend and I came following a Shakespeare Theatre matinee to celebrate my friend's birthday. We had inconsistent service from our server when it started to get crowded (Saturday night), but we always got someone's agreeable attention. The food is ALWAYS top notch. Chef Geoff remains my favorite restaurants.
Always reliable and always delicious. This is a neighborhood restaurant for me and when I want something special but not expensive, I go for their Sunset Special which never disappoints.
Consistent quality food.
Food was really slow to come out last night!! We eat there all the time and it’s never that slow
The food was AWESOME! The place is nice and cozy. Service was EXCELLENT!
The food was great! Service was a little slow but very friendly.
Went there for restaurant week. Portions were generous, perhaps too generous for lunch, but food was rather salty and service was very slow. Even for the level of busy that they had, it was veeeeery slow.
Nice restaurant for everyday dining. I opted for the restaurant week menu and started with a mimosa which tasted too much like cheap champagne-very bitter despite it being a peach mimosa. The breakfast tacos were good but nothing special about them. The highlight of the meal was the chocolate ganache cake for dessert, and the ice cream tasted homemade which was an added bonus.
This was restaurant week so it was packed. Our server was new but was working as hard as he could and doing a pretty good job in spite of a backed up bartender and mislabeled tickets. We've all been there right? Apparently not for the people sitting next to us. Rude and very demanding to be "comped" for their trouble. The head waiter handled everything with respect while protecting the new server. I'd go back in a heartbeat and ask for our server again. Another reason why everyone should work in the service industry!
Never a disappointment at Chef Geofs. The salads are huge, fresh, dressing on the side and the Greek salad I shared with my date was fresh Romaine lettuce garnished with olives, pepperocini, homemade croutons, red onion. My date enjoyed a Chef Geoffs burger cooked to perfection with luscious sweet potato fries. I enjoyed a succulent salmon burger with French fries that were crisp yet not greasy. Malbec wine and the evening was certainly fulfilling.
Food was amazing. We went here for restaurant week and really enjoyed the service and food options. I highly recommend it.
We love Chef Geoff’s for special occasions and dates!!!
No Restaurant week deals
As always, Chef Geoff's delivered in spades. Great food. Probably the best burger in all of DC. Amazing wine. And a dessert that I am still dreaming of having again:)
Did notice, though, that even at an early hour it was hard to hear.
Really great--- as per usual. Always fun . Server excellent.
Chef Geoff's is a neighborhood reliable eatery for us, and it did not disappoint. Our company was a little bothersome with a baby and really, really antsy, parent-hitting 2(?) year old on one side of us and twin girls ~16-20 months on the other side of us. We prevailed, but maybe all the kids get seated in the same area? or the private room, when available? versus on either side of a nice, quiet, want to have a conversation family?
Waiter was excellent, food good as always.
Very nice for out of town folks who want to visit a DC place that is not a chain restaurant.
