Booked for special occasion.....did not have two food items on the menu, and was not told this at the time of receiving menu....ordered food cod was overlooked , and they brought the starter exactly the same time as the main.....the oil they used to cook with, smelt as if it needed changing, so much so I had to go back to hotel and change as my clothes smelt of the oil they used...horrible experience ...never again

Food was excellent apart from slightly burnt humble crumble. very good value for money and very friendly staff. It is the best food in Christchurch in my opinion.

Our second visit after eating here on a previous visit to Christchurch last February. We were happy with the ambulance and service but my wife found her steak a bit too charred and my chips were covered in far too much salt. Why salt the chips at all? Let the customer put on their own if required. My burger however was superb. We were not quite as satisfied as our previous visit but may give it another go next time we are in Christchurch.

We have been to Cheese and Alfie's previously and have really enjoyed the good quality food and service so chose to book for our Christmas Eve meal via open table . We received a reminder email about our booking and were looking forward to it. However when we arrived for our meal we were most disappointed to discover that Cheese and Alfie's was shut- particularly as it was one of the busiest nights of the year so difficult to go elsewhere. This needs to be looked into by open table to ensure a similar experience does not happen to others. Very disappointed( and left hungry on Christmas Eve!)- normally would give 5 stars to Cheese and Alfie's but could not rate given it was shut this time!

We arrived at 19.30 as booked on the Saturday before Christmas. We were taken to the table, given menus and asked what we would like to drink. We chose an Australian Chardonnay from a selection of four or five whites. When the wine arrived we were asked what we would like to order to be told that there was no fish and no steak. Both of which would have been choices for my family. So the choice was burgers or pasta. We considered leaving but decided to stay. It took over an hour for the food to arrive, even though the restaurant was not busy, so we needed another bottle of wine: none left only Sauvignon Blanc. When the food did arrive in fairness it was hot and tasty, the service was from a very tired waitress who tried to be helpful. But none of us actually hate what we would have had as a first choice. So sorry to the restaurant but no recommendation from me.

We love going to cheese and alfies. The food is homemade, and never disappoints. I enjoy going there for lunch and having the sharing platter options as the breads and dips are lovely. We had the cheese burger this time which is tasty with homemade sauces on the side. The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed with plenty of dining room upstairs. staff are always helpful and friendly it really is a one-off and we love it for breakfast, coffee and cakes or a special dinner.
