Chaz on the Plaza Ratings and Reviews
As we were again staying at the Raphael we decided to give Chaz another chance. Our previous experience was disappointing, especially considering the high quality of the rest of the hotel. Our waiter was helpful in explaining the menu and appropriately attentive. This is, however, the limit to the good experience. We ordered the cheese board for an appetizer. Three different cheeses, but all about the same texture and age. I expect a bit more variety in the cheeses. Salads were OK. The issue was with the entrees. Of the three of us, none could finish our entree. I had a chicken dish which oozed blood when cut. Another diner had pork which was also undercooked. The third ordered a ribeye which was tough as leather. A word on the ribeye. There are two rideyes listed on the menu. A "heart" and a "cap". Apparently what they do is separate the most tender part of the ribeye, roll it and sell it as the "cap" at twice the price. The remaining bit they call the "heart." I will make no more comment about this. Considering the quality of other choices within a very easy walk, there is no reason to come here.
The above comments apply to the restaurant. The adjacent lounge has live jazz nightly which varies from not bad to very good. We were not disappointed at all by the lounge. We just didn't eat there.
We have had great meals there before with good service. Met my sister and her husband for dinner. Our waitress was very chatty and keyed in the wrong meal for my brother in law and had to reordered. We all had steaks. My filet had been sitting under the warmer and turned brown, was supposed to be medium rare. They filet the steaks open which revealed the overdone meat. I finally asked our waitress to remove the two remaining plates to start anew so we could eat at the same time. When the meals arrived for the second time, my sisters filet was brown, like the one I had sent back. I didn't feel like anyone was listening. I will say the maitre de took the bottle of wine from our bill, which was a nice gesture.
Wondered if they had a fill in chef after the Thanksgiving holiday. The evening was a bust.
Food was terrible. Had to send back both dishes. Ordered a prime rib sandwich. They brought a piece of steak (not prime rib) on plain sandwich bread, it was dry, nothing on it. It was supoosed to have swiss cheese, mushrooms, etc. We sent it back and they threw a small piece of cheese on it, microwaved it and sent it back. This was a $16 sandwich. The fries were frozen and very small salad was wilted. Worse food we ever had. At least they didn't charge us for it.
Above average food in a pleasant atmosphere. Visited on Thanksgiving and had a special holiday menu with 4 course meal. Enjoyed complimentary valet parking. Offered good wine list. Good location on the Country Club Plaza. Service was good and given by an efficient and caring staff. Would recommend to others.
I was extremely disappointed. I made a reservation >5 weeks prior to thanksgiving. I flew from NY to KC to enjoy thanksgiving dinner with my son. When we arrived promptly at 3:30 we were told to wait and waited almost 1/2 hour without being seated despite NUMEROUS tables. Food was disappointing and did not receive "sliced turkey" but rather the small pieces of meat. We were seated in the back and there was a HUGE cold draft. I expected a much better experience for $50 a plate! Will not recommend nor return.
We had made a reservation at 3:00, but did not get seated until 3:15. Mr. Carver claimed it was because they did not want to rush the people who were sitting at the tables. Instead, I think they had not spaced their reservations properly (not put enough time between them at each table). They were apparently trying to run through as many people as possible, in order to maximize their profit. More to the point, there were three tables with four seats open while we waited for our table, and they remained open throughout our dinner. Perhaps there were three no-shows, but it’s more likely that they were hoping to fill these tables with walk-ins, in order to make more money.
The prix fixe dinner was horrible. Salad arrived within a minute of when the waiter left with our order. Obviously it was made well in advance and was sitting in a refrigerator. Perhaps that is not uncommon, but the next two courses were also made well in advance. The ravioli had been sitting under a heating lamp so long that it had browned, the edges were curled up, and it was tough (well beyond al dente). The same was true of the entrees. Although sitting under a heat lamp did not do visible damage to the (fatty) prime rib or the ham, the surface of the mashed potatoes had developed a light brown crust. And at desert, the waiter did not give us a menu, but instead asked us if we wanted carrot cake – twice. I guess they had not sold much of the carrot cake they had on hand, so he was trying to push it on us. I finally had to ask about other desert options to get something else.
This was really just a cafeteria style dinner. The only difference was that we did not have to get in line to pick our dishes out from under the food warmer ourselves – the waiter did that for us. This was downright pitiful in a restaurant that claims to offer fine dining. For the record, we have dined there before, and it was better in the past.
The occasion was my husband‘s birthday but they did not bring that up or recognize it even though I put it in the reservation. He’s not big on fanfare so I didn’t want to say anything to our waiter but at this caliber restaurant I expected him to acknowledge it.
Chaz on the Plaza is a lovely restaurant - very pretty and a nice ambiance. We started with cocktails and were given enough time to enjoy them before ordering our dinner. I had the special clam chowder which was delicious and my friend had a green salad which was huge. I had the filet of sole which was excellent over vegetables. My friend had the rib-eye and he said the meat was amazing. We finished with coffee and a chocolate dense cake that had to be a million calories but excellent! Service was excellent and we were never rushed. When we left the restaurant and walked through the bar area it was lively and a very comfortable space. I would definitely return on my next visit to Kansas City.
From walking in to Resturant the lady that seated us and check our coats was so very personal she even introduced herself by name
And bar service before dinner was absolutely great
And our dinner waitress Tara was so great would go back every time I'm in Kansas City
"I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable." Staff was very helpful. They may it possible for a person with disability to enter into the restaurant with much ease. (Thank You!) Everyone enjoyed their meal. Some menu items were a little pricey. The main course for the price should come with least a bowl of soup or a side salad.
My second occasion for being at the restaurant with a large group and it was most enjoyable.
A special Thank You for providing a free dessert to our quest speaker whose Birthday was on the day we were at "Chaz". What a wonderful gesture. He was so very happy.
I brought two bottles of wine for a birthday celebration. I requested to be charged one corkage fee for the two bottles in advance, but was charged two corkage fees totaling $50. This has to be the highest corkage fee in the city. It will greatly influence a decision to return to this restaurant that is mediocre at best.
