About Chaya Downtown
The Chaya restaurant family originated when Hikage Chaya opened in Hayama, Japan. From this initial tea house, that opened 390 years ago, the Tsunoda family has expanded into French bistros and pastry shops throughout Japan and introduced the brand to the U.S. in 1984 with the opening of Chaya Brasserie in Beverly Hills. Since then, Chaya has opened locations in Venice, San Francisco, Downtown Los Angeles, and LAX. The cuisine at each restaurants can best be described as modern Japanese though each restaurant has a distinct personality reflecting their different locations.
The most important tenet of Chaya’s philosophy is high-level omotenashi (hospitality), bringing the Japanese teahouse tradition of warm and personal service to each guest.

Chaya Downtown Ratings and Reviews
A perfect place for a celebration. The food was fantastic and the service was great! The chef made a special treat for my friend after our server found out it was her Birthday. It was so special. I have already recommended this restaurant to my peers at work and my family.
Downtown LA is presently (September 2017) a disaster of ongoing construction, but it's worth enduring the ever-present traffic jams to relax over a meal at Chaya. Simply put, this is one of the city's best Asian restaurants, with a diverse menu of both small plates and entrees. The calamari is the best you'll have anywhere, sensationally but not spicily seasoned, and fried to a delicious crisp. The tuna California rolls are equally tasty, as are all of the fresh fish offerings. Service here is attuned to deadlines, with diners regularly shuttling to the Music Center for concerts, plays and the opera. Just plan to leave ample time for the transfer, as traffic (and shuttle drivers) can be unreliable.
I've been coming here for years and have always enjoyed the food and decor. However, what motivates me to write a review today is the restaurant's accommodation of a special request. I was meeting a friend who is somewhat soft-spoken, and the prior times we have met here for lunch, the ambient noise and the background music made conversation extremely difficult.
Today, I called the restaurant in advance to secure a quite table, and Harper at the front desk made sure that I had a quiet and comfortable spot. After scouting out a few spots, I decided on a table outside facing the plaza fountain. It was perfect. Kudos to the restaurant and to Harper providing the right setting for friend.
Chaya Downtown offers some of the most thoughtful service in Los Angeles. To a person, everyone is approachable, engaged in your experience and passionate about the food they serve. This includes the Executive Chef who took time to talk with us at length about the Chaya's seafood offerings and the techniques he used to bring out the flavors of the menu.
We are looking forward to going back to Chaya.
I have eaten at this restaurant many times in the past but it has been awhile. The menu seems to have changed from my memory. I do not remember so many small plates.
My date and I each ordered an entree. The server asked my date if she wanted a starter, she said no, I asked if she liked beets, she said yes so I ordered the beet salad and we agreed to split it.
When the beet salad was brought to the table it was in a large bowl with two large serving pieces. I asked the server if he would split it and he said "No, I can't split it, I will have to charge you extra if I do that." Given the fact that the bill with tip was $128 for two I felt this absurd and small minded. The phrase "And at these prices...." came to mind. The food however was excellent.
The service was excellent, the food was bland, I had the bento box and the fish was very dry and tasteless.
A friend of mine took me the for my birthday lunch. I was highly disappointed, I didn't say anything because I didn't want to complain in front of my friend (it was his recommendation).
For the price it wasn't work it.
I've been going to this restaurant since it opened, because before I retired it was right next door to my office. (I go to the one in downtown Los Angeles at 6th and Flower .) I also live a few blocks away, and so I go to this restaurant several times a month, and sometimes more than once during the week .
I have always found the quality of food here to be exceptional, and they source their fish from the best places. If I ever have the slightest problem with anything I would tell my server or the manager, and they take care of it immediately. (I do have to say that in the past two or three years I have not had anything to question, let alone complain about.)
Like any good restaurant, if you have special needs you should make it known to the manager before you sit down at the table. In my experience, and particularly at Chaya downtown , restaurants will always do their very best to accommodate any special needs.
I totally Love this restaurant, and people that I've taken there when they visit me always want to come back to Chaya.
My only experience is with the DTLA restaurant, though they have several other locations I think.
Food totally not worth 95+ for the dine LA.
We make a reservation with note saying we are celebrating ur wedding anniversary.
Guess what, no one even taking care of it.
Not even a candle!
Waitress was disappear for a long time.
I drop my chopstick, for like 10mins & I need to take & new chopstick from next empty table.
They clean the table & taken my wife fork... never replace it until I need to take the fork from the next empty table.
Anyhow, will give a try for the Sunday brunch buffet.
Manager offer us will treat us with a Sunday brunch.
I brought a first-timer to Chaya yesterday. Although he was amazed at the quality of his Bento Box, he couldn't take his eyes off my Petaluma Chicken Dijon (I substituted steamed broccolini and heirloon carrots for the fries). Service was efficient, but to get a table on our timeframe we were forced to dine outdoors on a very humid and warm day. Can't fault Chaya for not being able to control the weather!
My family and I came to Chya for Father's Day and had a wonderful time. This was our second time here, and both times we came for the Sunday brunch buffet. The service is excellent - the staff is very kind and attentive. We had with us my three year old son who loved the food and many dessert options. I personally feel this is the best buffet I've been to in terms of the sushi and sea food...very good quality and I firmly believe we got our money's worth. Will definitely be coming back!
