Chatham Street Cafe and Restaurant has been a dream in the making for many years. From conversations in the kitchen, to chats over the phone, the idea of venturing into the food business is one that the partners inherited from their grandmothers. Sri Lankan hospitality is about communal gatherings, familiar smells,
the matriarch holding fort, the adults cracking jokes and sharing laughterand the children running around. In short, it is a busy place with lots of food, cheer and memories to last a lifetime.
This is what the co-owners wanted to emulate in their first venture in hospitality.
The interior theme is a nostalgic journey through one of Colombo’s hip eat streets with architecture that takes you back many years depicted in a 17 meter mural painted by acclaimed Melbourne graffiti artist Alex Hendricks.
The menu was all about fresh produce, something for everyone, clean unadulterated seasonal modern Australian fare that tantalized the taste buds.

The entrees were excellent but then we waited for a long time for mains. It turned out the waiter didn't put through the rest of the order. They were very apologetic and offered us drinks while we waited. I should not have assumed the drinks were offered on the house, as it turned out the additional juices added substantially to the bill. Our main courses were a little overcooked. Then the live music started. The band was good but so loud that the sound was distorted and painful to listen to. They turned it down a little on request but still very loud. While the staff were kind and caring, our experience wasn't great and we would probably not return.

Had a lovely Chai and coffee. Food was well presented and flavoursome. I had their special - Salmon with soba noodles. Salmon was cooked perfectly - not overcooked or dry. My friends had scrambled eggs - soft and creamy, Cauliflower dish and chicken with soba. Plates were cleaned up by all! Looking forward to returning to try dinner dishes.

I really loved the ambiance and the food at the restaurant! Staff were fantastic, however I found the Crab-it to be too oily to my liking. Every bite I took of it oozed out with oil - the taste was good but just waaay too oily. I couldn't eat the waffle that came with the crab because the oil was drenched all over it... just something to consider for the future... but I will definitely return! The ulundu wade was outstanding!
