The Alexandria Chart House is a quintessential waterfront location for hosting private events including luncheons, business meetings, holiday & social events. Our private dining room overlooks the Potomac River with views of the U.S. Capitol and can accommodate groups up to 80 guests.
View Private Dining DetailsI like to go to this restaurant when I have friends or family from out of town because of the views of the water. I have generally found to food to be good but over-priced. Yesterday, my experience was less positive. We share several appetizers for brunch. The calamari was only luke warm, didn't have a lot of flavor, and was too chewy. Gazpacho and crab soup were good. The coconut shrimp was great. The shrimp/avocado stack was good, but needed seasoning.
Service was lackluster. Food was slow. Waitress claimed not to hear my friend order soup, but she repeated our order when we placed it and got it right. Wasn't pro-active about refilling drinks and should have put ice in the refill of club soda.
Having said all that, I expect to go again.
It was a beautiful Sunday and lovely to eat outside but the service was just ok and the food was very average. I had eggs Benedict, which I order a lot at different places. The bread seemed soggy like it had been sitting around for a while rather than recently toasted. The eggs and sauce were fine. The Home fries were blah.
Go here for the location and to have drinks.
Awesome service. Delicious food. Make a reservation otherwise...long wait.
A classic favorite; it never disappoints! Still in love with it after all these years!!
Celebrated my daughter’s birthday. Food was awesome! Customer service was exceptional! Will be back!
On arrival we were a little concerned that the food wouldn't be great because the restaurant is large and was busy; how wrong we were! We had an excellent server who recommended a good wine, the food was delicious, and we had a great experience. We'd go back for sure.
Variety of food on the menu. Waitress was very helpful with recommendations. Service and food is excellent. Wonderful view of the Potomac. When back in Alexandria will definitely frequent again.
Food and Service was amazing, we didn’t have to wait long to be seated our waitress was amazing and helped make everything better.
Always a pleasure to dine in this Restaurant. Our server Will was very good, he knows what wine to recommend and he also pre-sell appetizer, he recommended sizzling mushroom, which was very good.
I was just surprised the Restaurant Manager did not stop by :-( Also, we noticed that the receptionist who escorted us to our table was "drugged" or "drank" or "sleepy", we couldn't understand what she's talking about, she can hardly speak. Not a good image to Chart House.
The chart house is always nice and with a scenic view. I love the salad bar and drink options are usually pretty good. Parking isn't difficult in old town by the waterfront. The waitress we had seemed to be new, so it caused issues, but won't keep me from coming back.
Brunch was tasty, enjoyed the .99 cent bubbly and the window seating made my birthday extra special!
It's always a great time, romantic and excellent food and service!
There was a very strong smell of oil that we brought it home in our clothes, that wasn’t very pleasant!
Imagine reaching the $100.00 Reward point. You go online to pick a restaurant. You choose the Chart House in Old Alexandria, VA. You remember the great meals which you’ve had there whenever you visited Washington DC. You were sure of a wonderful experience.
Wrapped in your Sunday-best confidence in your assurances, take your family to a special evening. So far, so good.
We start with a perfectly executed Pomegranate Martini. Yum! Reeaal good!
Follow that with a filet pouched tastily on bed of wonderfully creamy mashed potatoes accented with four asparagus stems. This was a strong presentation with balanced flavors and textures. The steak was tender and well prepared.
Full to the gill and “fat and sassy “, I ordered some cheesecake to go and my check. To my amazement, the manager, Ian, informed me that there was nothing on the account- as though the printed reward in his hands, actually didn’t exist.
I was embarrassed in front of my family and in ear- distance of the incident. Ian fumbled and hemmed and hawed. When I was firm in my conviction and insisted that he slink back to the office and follow the clear directions for redemption of the Reward or call for help, he disappeared for some time and then returned.
.
He, without apology, announced that the Reward would be honored and my bill associated with my Landry's Select Club account was $45.00. Bully for me! A quality establishment would have at least offered some compensation for such an amateurish middle headed faux pas.
Three days later, I am still sizzling!
We really enjoy coming to this restaurant when we are in town. Great food
We had a great time at Chart House, we had a reservation but still had to wait and the staff seemed a bit chaotic. Once we were at our table we all had fish and it was delicious! They brought a cake for my grandparents anniversary and it was very nice. It's a bit pricey but you're paying for the whole experience in my book. Quiet table in the corner with great views of the river. I would drop the asian flare part of the menu and focus on the good fresh fish you have.
Dramatic venue on water front. Large menu, but friends said that the salad bar seemed to have less variety than in the past. Friendly service, but a bit slow due to full house that night. Drinks were good, but featured dessert not as great as promoted (a bit dry).
I had not gotten to this restaurant for many years mostly because of the fact that the parking in the area is horrible. But we decided to go with a friend from out of town. The service and view are great. The salad bar is not what it used to be, and I would say it is a pale shadow of what it used to be. I was quite disappointed with it. The entrees were so-so and overall disappointing - mine was supposed to have a ginger sauce on it and I could not taste any ginger. One friend had coconut shrimp - Red Lobster’s are much better.
Overall, I was sad to see the decline I. The food quality. There were also quite a few empty tables all through the time were there, yet people were kept waiting for long periods of time if they did not have a reservation.
I am a native of Northern Virginia, and the restaurant is not what it used to be. As a local, this was sad. I do not have any reason to return as a result. I mentioned this to a coworker on Monday, and he had to exact same feeling. The place is very overpriced for the meals we had, and all of these negative observations are evidenced by the many empty tables!
Everything was excellent. Maybe a fly on the window sill, but that did not bother us.
I haven't been here in over 10 years. When I arrived all my childhood memories came poring back. The service was excellent and the food was great! Definitely get the molten lava cake!!!
You pay for the view. Love the outside seating there.
The setting is wonderful. We had a great table overlooking the Potomac. Our reservation wasn’t ready and we had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated.
The food was average. My shrimp fresca seemed to have been kept under the warming lights too long and was dry. The “lump crab” was more shredded. My wife had trouble finding the flounder under the stuffing.
Most disconcerting was the waiter’s fumbling with opening the $70 bottle of wine. He had to leave the table to get someone else to finish pulling the cork. The wine was a bit warm for a white suggesting that the cellar wasn’t being monitored.
We enjoyed our view, engaged each other in good conversation, but don’t plan to go back.
Went for my birthday and everything was very good. Even though I made a reservation, the wait was still around 15 minutes which isn’t terrible. I did request a window table and was seated near the window but not next to the window. That was a little disappointing. The wine was excellent, shrimp cocktail was amazing and generously proportioned. I had the crab legs and my wife had the almond crusted chicken. Both were incredible but the waiter had a hard time tracking down crackers for my crab legs so I had wait a little bit to eat. Again, not a huge deal but a little disappointing. I did enjoy a free cappuccino mud pie for my bday. Overall it’s a wonderful restaurant with breathtaking views.
Nice happy hour before dining and wonderful meal to celebrate a Birthday. Great table and service was smooth.
First thing you notice upon entering is the smell of grease from the kitchen.
The hostess station resembles a wait station. They stand behind a counter that looks more like a wall. Hard to tell where to check in. When asked, the response was rather rude.
Seated at a nice table with a view. Server tried hard to suggest drinks, entrees, appetizers and dessert. A little too much emphasis on that vs quality and genuine service.
Overall service was poor. Poor follow up on refilling water (first time they poured water in our glasses the water was brown), ordered drinks never got them, entree came out not as ordered with missing topping, sent it back tasted like over seasoned fish, lack of follow up after entrees came out, etc... Not impressed.
Felt like I was in a production line. Get them in and get them out.
Quality was just not there.
Start with a rookie server, then add sub-par cocktails, average red snapper and a bottle of wine delivered to the table 1/2 way through dinner, you get a waste of money.
Food and service were great. James, our service was very good.
Great food and service from staff
Dinner experience was compromised by an issue that should not happen. Every glass for both wine and water smelled and tasted of chlorine. This is very off putting when you order an expensive wine and bottled water. The waiter tried to clean the glasses with marginal effect but there was no ownership of the problem by the restaurant. One got the impression that nobody really cared.
If you enjoy good wine dine elsewhere
Made reservations for dinner in advance and arrived 15 minutes earlier as it was too cold to tour the area. We were seated quickly and had excellent service. The food is very good, but expensive as you are paying for the view.
Would suggest the restaurant add a crab cake dinner as only choice was to add an appetizer or steak.
Good choice for special event.
Loved the food and the atmosphere. Good dining and great location would love to come back again cannot wait to come back again. Truly enjoyed myself. And love and enjoyed the food.
Thoroughly enjoyed it compared to most of the seafood restaurants in the area.
Our family celebration was well served and the various food choices much enjoyed. It was on a Sunday so a Brunch menu was available together with very reasonably priced Mimosas. They were great once the server made sure they were not overwhelmed with orange juice. We all thoroughly enjoyed our family get together.
Great customer service and scenery. Food was excellent. Love the crab cakes
The room we were in was very loud....the ceiling was the problem
Hostess Mary was extremely accommodating.
The waiter and all the staff were on top of their game.
I lived in Fairfax County for almost 20 years before retiring 5 yrs ago. Now my wife & I live back in upstate NY, over 300 miles away. But we still love traveling down occasionally for the fabulous meals, great Potomac/DC scenery, cozy fireplace, and the warm welcome from your attentive staff. My recent salmon meal was superb as was my wife's stuffed shrimp meal.
We have occasionally brought down some friends from here in upstate NY who also enjoy therir lunch or dinners at the Chart House. We plan to bring them down again some time.
Thank-you ALL in Alexandria VA for the memorable times in your A+++ Chart House Restaurant!! Jobs Very Well DONE!
Party of 7, reservations for 7:15pm, waitress very slow in service performance. When order was finally taken, waitress failed to share that certain desserts take 30-40mins. After dinner, my guest decided to order a special dessert (not knowing the time required), we were told the time period (35-40) and declined. Ordered coffee and if was barely warm, asked for a hot/fresh cup, the cup was microwaved with the coffee because the handle too hot to hold!! Very disappointed of our overall service, but food items were very tasty. Thanks.
The server was very nice. The restaurant has a great view of the river. The food was underwhelming for the price. On par with Red Lobster. The was not bad. It was good, but not what they charge good.
Great - Mark our server was the best!
