We had a wonderful experience at Char's! We celebrated my in-law's 60th wedding anniversary and it was a wonderful night with superb food in an exquisite setting. My in-law's thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we all look forward to returning in the near future!
Great food and service as always. The ambiance was further enhanced by a terrific jazz vocalist and pianist.
First, the outstanding: Food and Service. Second, well, unfortunately, a large group, seated in the main dining area, morphed the atmosphere to "Char's, a Sports Bar". So, our intended; late-seating, quiet, special evening did not materialize - we made the best of it. I did reach out to the owner later. Her response has left me puzzled as to what atmosphere she intends or desires. I would not return for a romantic or a business, one-on-one diner. With other couples? Yes.
Good food excellent service! Recommended.
Delicious meal, great service. Would have liked more vegetarian choices. The parfait was wonderful.
It was a great experience. Good food good service we were satisfied.
A great place for a special date. The food is great and the staff is very accommodating. It's worth the price.
Excellent service, excellent and excellent atmosphere. Char is so accommodating and makes sure she speaks with each of her guests. We drove from Lancaster in a terrible snowstorm because we love it so much!
We have never been disappointed with Char’s. We usually sit at the bar and have a drink before being seated at a table. The bartenders are very professional, but also very friendly. We love talking to them about a variety of subjects. Often times we will just stay at the bar for dinner which we find very acceptable.
My wife and I both had the grouper and it was exceptional as were the sides. The bar is in the middle of the restaurant and so you don’t get the amazing view of the river that you get from a table in the main dining room.
The ambiance is very nice and it creates a feeling of comfort and well being. I particularly like looking at the artwork that hangs on almost all the walls.
This is, by far, the best overall restaurant in the Harrisburg area.
Wonderful. That's all. Wonderful.
Char's is one of the finest, if not THE finest restaurant in Harrisburg. The food is outstanding. The ambiance is made beautiful by blown glass work and lovely artwork. The view of the river. is breathtaking. The bartenders are talented and friendly. The wait staff is professional and knowledgeable. Char is hand's on to make sure the best quality food and drink is served. She is attentive to her customers which makes for a unique and wonderful experience.
Amazing first time experience and the Valentine’s Day menu was amazing! The grilled vegetable risotto was creamy and the veggies were cooked to perfection and the grilled beef tenderloin was unforgettable. Thank you for a lovely evening!
Fantastic evening as usual at Char's! Relaxing, upscale atmosphere where you truly enjoy the food, quality service and the overall experience. Char's would be highly successful in any large city, we are fortunate to have it here in Harrisburg.
Char’s is as good as any restaurant in the country.
Great food, great service, and on-site owner who is great with customers.
Exceptional dining experience! Highly recommend
The food is always outstanding. The Risotto du Jour is one of my favorite parts of the menu: always featuring very creative combinations and extraordinary flavors. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I will definitely return for more amazing food and drinks.
always an outstanding experience! Great food, outstanding service, always worth the trip from York.
We had heard several positive things about Char's, and my wife and I certainly were not disappointed by any means. Our meals were excellent; strongly recommend the duck. There was a dessert (e.g. espresso cake) that was listed on the menu that we wanted, but was not available when we asked, which is the only disappointing aspect but everything else was wonderful. Superb wine list and excellent non-alcoholic drink selection for those that have to drive. Lively atmosphere, small three-piece band was playing, but still quiet enough to be able to hold a conversation. Although we were there at nighttime in the middle of winter, the restaurant has a wonderful view of the Susquehanna River and outdoor seating during the summer time. Waitress was extremely attentive, go out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. We go on a date night every few months (it is hard to do so with three young kids!) and we definitely plan on returning again.
Excellent food, fantastic atmosphere ..
Very good selection of drinks ..
We ate at the bar and bartender Brittany was awesome .. she put a candle in my dessert when she heard it was my birthday !
Can’t wait to go back ..
The mansion is beautifully restored with a stunning view of the Susquehanna River. Original artwork decorates the restaurant. The owner is very gracious and invites you to look around. The menu extremely creative and the food is delicious. Serivce was outstanding. It's a little pricey, so expect to pay $100-$150+ per couple. But it's worth the experience.
Celebrating a new job landing. The food was delicious. We were seated by a window with a river view which was pretty. Our waiter, Loren, was knowledgeable, friendly, and discreet. He gave us excellent service, yet was not intrusive and really added to the experience. The shrimp and lobster soup was lacking shrimp and lobster--it was a broth with some potatoes, but that was the only off-note. Next time, we just skip the soup. Enjoyed the evening and while seating is close, we arrived for an early reservation, so things were quiet and not yet crowded. They did an excellent job of spreading people out as well and so it seemed intimate even in the large room. Special treat and really enjoyed our dinners---scallops with risotto, and filet mignon--both cooked perfectly. We will be back.
My wife and I have come here frequently for years. We are never disappointed. Great service. Great cocktails. Excellent wine selection. Wonderful ambiance.
We had another wonderful experience dining at Char's. Great food and service. What a wonderful New Year Eve!!!!!
Great special menu for New Years Eve with decent portion sizes
I ordered the seafood chowder but it was more like a bisque, my husband's pear/squash soup was excellent
I ordered the filet mignon it WAS delicious -----on the other hand my husband ordered the Paella
it was NOT a true paella but more a smallish seafood risotto quite bland in flavor
for dessert the lemon ice was so good but the pecan tart should have been warmed with a tiny splash of whipped cream perhaps ? altogether it looked very festive
Great service, beautiful ambience, and delicious, tasty food ...topped off by Char visiting our table to see if everything was satisfactory. My scallops and shrimp with curried rice was amazing but gone too quickly. My friend much enjoyed her vegetarian pasta. This is a lovely setting to enjoy any dinner or a special occasion.
The service was great from beginning to end. Loved the pomegranate and raspberry martini. Ford was very good and enjoyed the chocolate dessert.
Will go again.
Delicious food with a beautiful setting to match. The cocktails were great - I had the special for the evening, a pomegranate blood orange martini. Our group of 8 enjoyed our salads, appetizers and entrees. We'll be back!
The food and service was awesome. Will definitely dine there again.
Had read a bunch of favorable reviews and now I get it. Very friendly staff - food is great and wine list is really good too. Will certainly return for another visit. Highly recommend this place - very convenient parking too!
Great venue for special occasions.
Food and service are always excellent.
Excellent food and great service. If prices were 15 % to 20% lower , Char's would be a great place for dining more often. For a special ocasion Char's fits as the right place to dine.
Wonderful food, great service and we got to meet the chef and the owner. We had a very fun time.
Char continues to deliver great food in an exceptional atmosphere that reeks class and quality. She is the hostess with mostest!
Great atmosphere and even better food. This has become a great place to celebrate special occasions.
Wife and I had a newborn about two months ago - grandma was babysitting so we were excited to get out for the first time! I always wanted to try Char's, as it had excellent reviews.
The ambiance is very nice, old Victorian style which my wife loves. 40 degree weather kept us from sitting on the porch, but we will definitely want to try the outdoor dining when the weather permits.
Seated promptly, service was very courteous, nothing to complain. Started with the warm cranberry walnut bread, very tasty. We had the lamb meatballs for a starter. Lacked a little in flavor, but not bad overall. Next the beef dumplings - also good but would probably go in a different direction next time. We shared the risotto with the braised beef - absolutely fantastic! Portion was generous, and taste was out of this world! Ended with the apple bread pudding - my wife loved it, I'm not a big fan but it wasn't bad.
Next time we will probably go with two main courses instead of the starters. Overall, a very pleasant experience, and a new favorite!
The food was “meh”.
Overpriced food that was “meh”
Service was excellent.
The cheesecake was amazing.
We will not return.
At its Front Street, Harrisburg, PA location, Char's Tracy Mansion has a great view to the Susquehanna River. A visit there in daylight hours would be highly recommended. The interior is tastefully done and features art glass chandeliers made by the owner's artist daughter.
My cocktail order was not from the menu, but very common--a Rye Manhattan. I asked for it in a rocks glass, but not to be served with ice. Instead, I was served an Old Fashioned. Oh well. I hate sending stuff back, knowing the animosity that can cause, so I drank it. Okay, but not really my drink.
We were interested in a shrimp dish that included cilantro and asked if we could have it minus the cilantro. Nope. This made us wonder if Char's kitchen is using sauces made in advance, possibly with frozen portions. Otherwise, how difficult could it be to omit the cilantro? Hmmm. Our entrees were the Braised Lamb Shank and the Marinated Cornish Game Hen, both well prepared. For dessert? the Chocolate Souffle was very rich and chocolaty-good!
A gorgeous interior and a beautiful view to the river. Dinner for two with drinks plus tip will run you about $125 each.
Char’s is a comfortable, high-end restaurant, situated near the Susquehanna with a fabulous view of the river as the sun sets. The cuisine is wonderful with healthy choices to meet every taste. The indoor ambiance with fine food and cocktails outside on the porch made our anniversary memorable. Joel’s expert service made our evening complete. A flawless experience!
One of the very best restaurants in Harrisburg. You can reliably count on very good service, food. The atmosphere is also good, particularly when watching the sunset over the Susquehanna. We also had enjoyable service in the bar with after dinner drinks.
