Char's Tracy Mansion Ratings and Reviews
Wife and I had a newborn about two months ago - grandma was babysitting so we were excited to get out for the first time! I always wanted to try Char's, as it had excellent reviews.
The ambiance is very nice, old Victorian style which my wife loves. 40 degree weather kept us from sitting on the porch, but we will definitely want to try the outdoor dining when the weather permits.
Seated promptly, service was very courteous, nothing to complain. Started with the warm cranberry walnut bread, very tasty. We had the lamb meatballs for a starter. Lacked a little in flavor, but not bad overall. Next the beef dumplings - also good but would probably go in a different direction next time. We shared the risotto with the braised beef - absolutely fantastic! Portion was generous, and taste was out of this world! Ended with the apple bread pudding - my wife loved it, I'm not a big fan but it wasn't bad.
Next time we will probably go with two main courses instead of the starters. Overall, a very pleasant experience, and a new favorite!
At its Front Street, Harrisburg, PA location, Char's Tracy Mansion has a great view to the Susquehanna River. A visit there in daylight hours would be highly recommended. The interior is tastefully done and features art glass chandeliers made by the owner's artist daughter.
My cocktail order was not from the menu, but very common--a Rye Manhattan. I asked for it in a rocks glass, but not to be served with ice. Instead, I was served an Old Fashioned. Oh well. I hate sending stuff back, knowing the animosity that can cause, so I drank it. Okay, but not really my drink.
We were interested in a shrimp dish that included cilantro and asked if we could have it minus the cilantro. Nope. This made us wonder if Char's kitchen is using sauces made in advance, possibly with frozen portions. Otherwise, how difficult could it be to omit the cilantro? Hmmm. Our entrees were the Braised Lamb Shank and the Marinated Cornish Game Hen, both well prepared. For dessert? the Chocolate Souffle was very rich and chocolaty-good!
A gorgeous interior and a beautiful view to the river. Dinner for two with drinks plus tip will run you about $125 each.
One of the very best restaurants in Harrisburg. You can reliably count on very good service, food. The atmosphere is also good, particularly when watching the sunset over the Susquehanna. We also had enjoyable service in the bar with after dinner drinks.
Char’s is a comfortable, high-end restaurant, situated near the Susquehanna with a fabulous view of the river as the sun sets. The cuisine is wonderful with healthy choices to meet every taste. The indoor ambiance with fine food and cocktails outside on the porch made our anniversary memorable. Joel’s expert service made our evening complete. A flawless experience!
My wife and I went here for our one year anniversary and had a fantastic experience. My wife got the risotto of the day, which she loved! I got the pasta of the day, which was the perfect portion size and not overloaded with too much flavor. The food was very good with a wonderful wine & cocktail list. The beer list was very standard nothing super special. We highly recommend giving Char's a try!
Love this location. THis was our first date out in awhile because we have young children at home. Well worth the night out. Great food. Great service. Tables a little close to each other; could hear other people's conversations a little too well. Overall would definitely go again and recommend to others!
My husband and I enjoyed a lovely meal. The decor is tasteful and not distracting, you can see the Susquehanna from some tables. My husband ordered the filet, it was done to his liking. I had a special which was halibut with mango salsa atop creamy lemony risotto. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. We also ordered a starter of caprese salad with burrata that was divine. The Apple walnut bread pudding we finished with we could have skipped and not missed anything, it was a bit dry, nothing remarkable. Service was satisfactory, server was attentive and polite without hovering. We will definitely visit Char's again for a special night out!
Great overall dining experience. The mansion is beautifully decorated with unique glass lighting. It is on Front St. with the Susquehanna just across the street. We dined on the porch on a perfect Fall evening. The food was just delicious. Don't miss the Caesar salad. Our fish and risotto meals were tasty and the wine list is small but good wine choices.
Had a great time celebrating with some friends over great food and wine. Quiet enough that we could easily hear each other, yet not so formal that you feel like you can't laugh and make a little bit of noise.
Server was also helpful and had some great suggestions from the menu.
Had a wonderful dining experience on Friday night September 15, table was perfect overlooking the river, Band added to the atmosphere, A very nice touch having Char and the chef visit the table. Food was fabulous and wine also great. Looking forward to coming back
This was the best meal that we have experienced in as long as we can remember! Our reservations were later, so when we arrived, the restaurant was busy. Nevertheless, we were seated promptly. The only faux pas we experienced was they forgot to give us a menu, so we had to ask the waiter to provide them.
Once that was handled, the service was impeccable. Dinner progressed in a leisurely fashion, I ordered the buratta caprese salad, with modest expectations (since it was so late in the season for tomatoes). It was superb.
For entrees we ordered the halibut, and chicken. I can say that both were the best we could ever remember!
If you are ever in the Huntington area, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to an outstanding dinner at Char's Tracy Mansion
A lovely riverfront view and live music are terrific reasons to visit Char's. The seasonal menus, delicious food, drinks and wine list are key reasons we keep coming back!! It's a fun place to meet for drinks or even dessert. This visit we had a terrific steak meal with fabulous wine and followed this dinner with drinks on the patio enjoying the live music.
I asked for beef empanadas, which they didn't have. Then for desert noticed they have apple empanadas to satisfy my pastry craving, they didn't have that either. Food was ok. The noodles of the vegetarian option were slimy and too spicy, but the rest of my table very much enjoyed their meals. I guess for central PA that is the place to be.
I would like to mention that my tastes and service expectations are skewed, I travel all over the world, stay at 5-star hotels and eat at 5-star restaurants, so it's hard for me to be a true judge of a small town culinary experience as well as the service they provide. If 2 items I requested were not available at any decent place in Paris, I would have been offered a free desert of my choice. It's not about the monetary benefit but purely providing good customer service.
Also note if you want to be seated outside do not reserve on line.
We were a little disappointed that we were not able to be seated in the front room with a view of the river. We were celebrating our 15 anniversary and drove from 45 minutes away. The other rooms do not offer the same ambiance. If you go, make sure to ask for a view of the river. If you don't have a view, the food is a little over priced.
This restaurant is a gem in the Harrisburg area! By far the best restaurant I have been to. It was one of the most fabulous meals I have had in a long time. From the cocktails to dessert, it was perfectly executed. Our waitress (Carrie) was the best part she was absolutely lovely and incredibly knowledgeable of the menu and general cuisine. The manager made a point to stop at our table and make sure that everything was going well. The live music was extremely fun and enjoyable. I highly recommend this establishment for all occasions. They are extremely accommodating!
We were there on a week night, relatively late in the evening, and the restaurant was not crowded at all. I think there were more people at the bar than at tables. It was a little noisy from the people sitting at the bar, but quiet once they left. This is the opposite of other times we have been to the restaurant (mainly at the holidays) when it was crowded with large groups.
The service was impeccable. Perfect timing of the courses. Loved everything we ate with the exception of the summer salad special. The type of lettuce (I can't recall what it was called) was spindly, hard to cut, and just hard to eat in general. My husband had the beef tenderloin, which was cooked perfectly. I had the pork, also done perfectly with great seasonings.
We enjoyed dinner immensely!
