Char's Tracy Mansion Ratings and Reviews
The food was excellent, Richard was looking for salt and pepper but found out he didn't need it...everyone was very friendly and service was fast...it was pricey...but must admit it was an awesome meal, and looking out at the water front was awesome...thanks...it was our first time there and we will be back....
Great food. The service was sub par especially for such a nice place as this. We've had better service at restaurants which cost half as much as Chars. It was very disappointing. Besides that the food is excellent. Oh and our table was uneven and rocked back and forth. Had to put napkins under the foot. Very expensive place
The owner (Char) is ALWAYS present and she greets you like she remembers you and is glad to see you again. It is elegant but not stuffy and pretentious (unlike the "Circular" at the Hotel Hershey). Servers will engage you as much -or as little- as you want. On slower nights, the head chef comes to each table and, again, seems willing to chat as long (or as little) as you want. The food is interesting and wonderfully prepared. We try to go on a week night when it is less crowded.
Some dishes were just too fancy. Osso bucco should have had lots of rich gravy from vegetables and wine in which it was braised. Instead, there were steamed vegetables on the side and a white creme something on the meat. There was a marrow bone without marrow. This used to be my favorite dish when Char's was at its original location. Smoked perch appetizer had a sweet glaze not to my taste, although my date liked it.
We took my parents for their 57th wedding anniversary. Having been there ourselves, we knew they would find Char's special and worthy of their special day. Char's did not disappoint. The service is attentive and professional, warm and welcoming. The food was fabulous and the wine pairings were perfect. The ladies both ordered the fish special, halibut, and the men had osso bucco. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious. Char's is not inexpensive, but it is worth the cost for a lovely dining experience. And you can enjoy Char's if you are on a budget by going during Happy Hour or ordering some of the less expensive items like the small plates. For example, the soup special was Ham Hock and combined with a salad, this would have been an inexpensive and delicious meal.
We were there on New Year's Eve, and in spite of it being very busy, the food was superb, as usual. Very interesting and upscale menu, a little pricey but worth it. Char personally visited every table and made the guests feel at home. The little his and hers favors were a nice touch too. We have visited several times and have never been disappointed. Be sure to check out their happy hour at the bar too!
Dinner was outstanding, busy New Years night so service was not quite there. Drinks were, well bad. Ordered a dry martini, first one was fairy good. Second one was like a salt lick, sent it back and they fixed it. Third one was 75% vermouth instead of dry again. Sent it back, obviously the bartender just shook the same drink and sent the same crappy martini back. At that point I just sent it back again and gave up. Still a nice evening, but not sure we will go back again on a big event night.
Fresh food immaculately prepared with stellar service. I don't live in the area and my friend had never been so first time for us both. The owner was on hand greeting guests (Thursday night) and watching over the bar and dining room. I had the smoked lake perch appetizer...this is something I don't see on many menus, fresh water fish. Done right, it's only very lightly smoked, and eaten somewhat like a spread on toast points or melba or such, with a very light horseradish cream sauce. All were in perfect balance and it was also a generous portion. The halibut special was prepared with a lemon butter capers sauce which is not terribly creative but when flawlessly executed is still as good a fish entree as can be had. This was very fresh halibut and I thought it was superb. My friend ordered the NY strip, medium, and it was cooked to perfection and he was very impressed. Nice wine list, awesome ambiance with custom modern glass art light fixtures and sculptures offsetting the old mansion look and feel. We want to come back when we can better enjoy the view of the Susquehanna and the patio dining option.
Char's showed up in internet searches with great reviews, and after a wonderful birthday dinner there for my wife, I wholeheartedly join the chorus of rave reviews. The ambiance is inviting, the staff courteous and attentive, the bar is fun, the selection is wonderful, the menu is amazing, and the food superb. Truly a must-dine!
I know they spend a lot of time on their food, I just wish there was more of a selection. The service was just ok. It was apparent our server had a large party in the other room. While he would be engaging and pleasant at some points, he was completely distracted and disengaged at other times. This is coming from a table of 6 with 4 of these people being previous servers recently in the Harrisburg area. We know when you're in the weeds.. just ask for help when there's automatic gratuity added so the rest of your customers don't feel ignored on a large check. It will keep us from coming back.
evening was great, food and service. Except the young lady sitting us put us in a small corner table for two. It was on top of a table full of people we did not know. I'm 6'8, my wife is 6'0. We asked her for a different table, which there were many! She said no! The waiter heard us talking about getting up to leave and he promptly moved us to a appropriate table and took very good care of us the entire evening. I feel the Hostess needs a little more training, she is working in a high end resteraunt. Not Dennys.
We live in Pittsburgh and occasionally drive to New York or Philadelphia and Char's Tracy Mansion is the perfect place to stop for dinner on the way.
This time I stopped with my daughter on the way to a college tour in Philadelphia.
The atmosphere is very pleasant, with nice lighting, the waitstaff is always friendly and professional.
We started with a well balanced pear and endive salad which was delicious. The sautéed skate small plate was an interesting combination of flavors, but just a little dry.
We split the prime sirloin which was perfectly done and had sides of polenta and onion that enhanced the flavor.
We also got a side of the pomme frites with truffle oil and rosemary. We were digging around in the bottom of the serving cone to get every last bit!
Our waiter knew we had to get on the road, and he did a great job pacing the dinner so that we did not seem rushed but had an enjoyable meal in an hour.
Really enjoyed our first time here. Good food quality and the duck pate' appetizer was great!!! Owner Char came to our table. Very friendly!! They have lots of beautiful glassware and sculptures throughout the place that her daughter creates. Char herself makes really neat jewelry too and my wife (alao named Char) even bought a pair of earrings before leaving. Definately want to come back in summer as they have a large patio porch area with live music during the nicer weather months we were told.
