We made a reservation at 6:30pm and were sat promptly. Our server, Blaze, apparently hadn't noticed his new table. The server from the other section adjacent checked on us 3 times, the third time taking our drink order prior to our server coming to the table. After being at the table for 20 minutes we finally placed our order.
My dinner guest and I both ordered an app, soup, and salad. Food was placed on a tray stand near our table and the server, Blaze, then stated, oh your apps are here. This is after almost 30 mins since placing our order. He then picked the tray up and walk away. I noticed he then delivered the incorrect food to a table across from us. I had no stop Blaze and ask what happened to our apps. He explained that he was wrong and those weren't our apps. After being in the restaurant 52 minutes we were finally eating our appetizers. Which were delicious, I got the dynamite scallops and my guest ordered the crab cake.
At this point I asked to speak to the manager. From that point on the service was seamless, she delivered our salads and soups at the perfect moment and we were done with our meal in 21 mins. She also comped our apps which was appricated due to the delay in service.
Will come back, hoping for better service.
Typical brunch options. Pleasant variety of dishes.
This food was incredibly sub par and disappointing for the hefty $30 Sunday brunch price. All of it was very disappointing, from the sour-tasting creme brûlée, to the powdered tasting eggs and flavorless catfish. The only thing that really tasted good was the dessert spread, and even that was a health code violation since they placed the tongs (which people have their hands all over) DIRECTLY on top of the desserts on the tray - a bit disgusting and unacceptable. The service was okay except for the hostess saying “My adderall and coffee haven’t kicked in yet” to the server directly in front of us as she was handing him the menus. The decor is alright but the walls next to the booths had food splatter and were not well cleaned.
All in all I would avoid here, and definitely won’t be back. For $15 I got a much better brunch experience at a restaurant in the market downtown, both food and ambiance wise.
March 15, 2018. Made reservations at 6:00 before a local concert. When we arrived, it was obvious that the restaurant was somewhat busy because of the event. We were greeted by the server immediately, but It took forever to get our drinks. Three of us ordered 6 oz. fillets and one had the salmon. The fillets were ordered medium rare and when delivered looked like a well done hamburger. Terrible cuts of meat and way overdone. However, the person that had the salmon found theirs to be done appropriately. It was brought up nicely to the server how poorly prepared the fillets were and she basically shrugged it off. No flavor piece of shoe leather. We left very disappointed. This is unusual for this restaurant!
Charley's Crab has a great selection and priced competitively for the area. It's a great place to have dinner before an event at Van Andel Arena and leave your car until after the show. Service was great and view we had was breathtaking.
We enjoyed an early evening dinner with a water view. The meal was fantastic and great service was provided. The free parking before attending the Eagles concert because we were dining at Charleys was a great + bonus and we plan to do that again for the next concert.
We have never had a bad meal. The food is always delicious. Staff is very attentive and personable. Food may be a little on the pricey side, but for excellent sea food it is well worth the price.
I have been to the other locations and was not impressed with this location. They were under staffed at the bar area, this resulting in long wait time on service and food & drinks. Bringing wrong drinks and food items. I had dinner in the dinning area and they made other mistakes (warm crab cakes) resulting in them taking off 10.00. This did not make up for all the issues. The manager on duty was flip about bring it to his atttention. He smelled like cig. and just walked away and didn't make an attemted. The assist manager ( I dont have her name) was great!
Loved everything about Charlie's Crab. Food was delicious. One suggestion, the table at was very dark, so much so that it was hard to even read the menu
It's a nice place. The brunch is very good....but certainly not great.
The food was delicious! Who knew fish could could taste so fantastic!
We were at a Weekend to Remember for couples. We were to have a date night on Saturday night. I have many food allergies and really can't eat out unless I know the ingredients.
Our waiter was awesome about my allergies, gave me plenty of time to look on my FODMAP app to see what I could have. He helped me with ordering my meal. The food was great and I never got sick, which is extremely rare unless I cook my own food. My husband had your new fashion and said that would be a drink he'd have a hard time not stopping. It was so good.
Thank you for making our date night so memorable.
Birthday celebration. All went very well. Everyone enjoyed their meal and service was great.
Saturday night family dinner. Restaurant was half full, under-staffed and dirty. Our evening was around 2 hours which doesn’t bother me. What did bother me was the service. 2 of our 4 options were not available. All the tables around us were empty and never cleared and clean. Not happy, considering this used to be a staple restaurant in GR.
Everything was delicious at Charley’s Crab but when we arrived with a reservation, we had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. When we were finally seated, we noticed that over half the dining room was empty. This tells me they were either under staffed, or they just like 20 ppl waiting for tables.
Once seated, we had to wait 20 minutes for a glass of wine we ordered. Lol our waitress brought an empty glass and said the bar was backed up too. The rest of the dinner was lovely. Appetizers and Meal very good and came very quickly.
Unfortunately, our most recent experience this past Saturday evening, at Charle's Crab wasn't good. We were seated 50 minutes after our reservation time. Wait/service interaction at our table was an additional 15-20 min. Apparently our planned waitress had become ill. The manager came by to suggest they were working on the problem...but apparently wasn't able to take a drink order himself.
Needless to say...dinner took a bit longer than we planned. The food was ok...not very warm when it arrived at the table. The table adjacent to us (4) people...seated well before we were, took even longer to be served.
As we all discussed (and laughed)...it this was the worst thing that happened to us that day...well, it was still a good day. Even comping a drink might have been appropriate. Anyway....hard to get excited to return any time soon, or recommend to a friend.
Had reservations for 7:00pm didn't get seated until 8:00pm.. Didn't even have the energy to say anything to management because i was so hungry!
Food was great. Service not so great. Sat and waited for drinks several times. Waited with empty coffee cup and water glass for more than 10 minutes. When paying $172.00 for 3 people service should be exemplary.
We had a Friends 'reward for a birthday. When we paid for our meal we noticed that the $25.00 was not deducted from our bill. We had paid with a gift card and were told that since we had enough on the gift card to pay for our bill, the $25.00 reward would not be deducted, but would remain on our account. This is the first time we have encountered such a situation, and we feel that the $25.00 should have been deducted even though there was enough on the gift card.
Our food and service were excellent, however.
Unfortunately, the food was just ok but the prices were expensive. I started with a wedge salad. I had to send it back because the lettuce was brown in the middle. The server said she would bring me another for which I said that I did not want the same thing because the first one was bad. She said OK but never offered me a replacement. Also, the service was very slow. We would think twice about going back again. When we lived here 10 years ago, it was very good with very good service.
Food was good and pretty decent. The building however looks like it is not being taken care of. Wallpaper falling off and cracked wooden beams
It was Valentine's Day and we had decided NOT to fight the dinner crowd so we had an early dinner about 3:30 PM. We were surrounded by about a three-quarters house. The food was amazing, right off the menu. Shrimp cocktails were as good as we've ever eaten. My Salmon was excellent and her Caribbean Combo left her swooning. Our only argument was over who had the best entre. Truly it was a memorable experience. Rolls and crackers were also outstanding. Desserts were the perfect ending to an absolutely beautiful dining experience. The beautiful Grand River just outside was the perfect backdrop for our Valentine's perfect date. We've eaten there many times before but this one topped them all. The food and ambiance is always noteworthy which is why it is one of Grand Rapids' favorite places to eat. Anyone who's ever been there will always recommend it to friends! Oh, and our waiter, Blaze, was a good as the food, always anticipating our every need! Try Charlie's Crab and you will love it ...... We do, often!
Dave and Jan from Lowell, Michigan
Ordered a medium rare filet. Came out rare. Sent it back. Took 15 minutes and came back medium on edges and rare in the center. Ate half brought the rest home to finish cooking the rest. Guess you don't order steak at a fish restaurant.
Hadn't been there in awhile and decided to go for valentines. Server had too many tables and we were largely ignored. Prices have gone way up and everything is ala cart which I Dont have a problem with but if you charge that much service should be impeccable. Asked for water three times, got an apology for forgetting, but never got the water.
Went there 2/14/18 for anniversary dinner. The locale was great. The frozen river was a great sight to take in. The food would have been a lot better had it arrived to our table HOT. M yfillet was warm at best. But even at that the food did tast good!
2nd time in a row that we’ve been disappointed. Food quality not up to a top dining level. Charley’s Crab is more of a specialty restaurant ( seafood) than a top notch restaurant.
First time there and loved everything!! Highly recommend.
Service lacked a bit but overall experience was OK. Traditional fine dining
Food was excellent as they were running some Valentine's specials which we selected. Our server was very attentive to our needs and questions about the menu. We ordered a Tuscan shrimp & scallop dish which had sundried tomato relish on it (excellent) and a crab stuffed salmon (also excellent). Our appetizer were deep fried lobster bites along with the always excellent rolls. Completed the meal with a shared strawberry shortcake dessert. Overall an excellent experience. I will say though that the restaurant needs some minor repairs or overall updating as we noticed from our table several water cracks/leaks. These should be addressed immediately as some of these cracks/leaks were over tables. The restaurant is looking a little aged and needs a facelift but I don't know if they get the volume needed to support a facelift. Charley's Crab used to be the only good seafood restaurant in town but no longer is. As a result their business has appeared to have dropped off. Too bad as the location is right on the river. Need to freshen up the space a bit.
Excellent food as always with the exception of the Cobb Salad which had all the ingredients mixed together and an odd maple flavored dressing; very good service. The venue was a bit noisy but since it was a brunch there was a great deal of foot traffic.
I ordered fish, unfortunately the bones were not removed. With seafood being their specialty, I expected more attention to detail for problems like that. Also, the scallops were over cooked (both in entree & appetizer). I doubt I will return anytime soon.
Good food good experience
Our table had a great view of the Grand River. The crab legs were excellent. My husband’s steak was over cooked.
Very expensive. Food portions tiny. Salmon=2 bites. Was very different from the last time we visited. Veggies were very oily. Might not go back.
The food was good for Michigan seafood. The view was excellent and the cocktails were exceptional!
We had a great time going out with friends. Enjoyed some great steaks and seafood.
Had never been to Charley's Crab before but it far exceeded our expectations! Really good signage - extremely easy to find. They wished me a happy birthday without even mentioning it on our reservation. Our server DJ was amazing!!!!! Food was really good. Floor manager was very visible and attentive - "touched" our table immediately and multiples times just to check in. Great wine list. Delicious looking specialty cocktails (although pretty expensive - about $12 for a martini, etc). Bread was warm and yummy but very crumby/messy, crackers and salmon spread was good. Great ambiance - very romantic and intimate. Great view of the river - amazing to watch all the ice chunks travel downstream & the birds. Definitely a place for a special occasion - not your every day dining budget friendly restaurant. The creme brulee took a while but was absolutely worth the wait - a lot larger than expected and very delicate & delicious! Over all great experience - high quality foods - exactly what you would expect from a fine dining establishment!
The salmon meal was truly a great dining experience.
The fish and chips was a mistake! Everything other than the fish was outstanding. There was a little fish, lots of tail and tons of greasy batter. I should have sent it back rather than trying to eat the fish. My inside hurt all night from the fish. This restaurant is so much better than this! Very disappointed 😫
Went for Lobster. No fresh Lobsters any more. Not enough people ordering them. They had frozen Lobster tails, poor choice for a fine sea food establishment. Wen to order salmon. Not fresh wild Atlantic, note if it doent say Wild Caught on menu or grocery store you will have farm raised (its soft and yecky -- you know). Went to bathroom, washed hands ins in ice cold water. If its so slow to afford hot water then its to slow to serve fresh sea food. We canceled our order, paid for our adult beverages and went to a great secondary choice. Place needs to decide if its going to be a run down cheap run of the mill sub par place or a upscale place. Cant be both with price point. Wasted our time showing up, was a memorable visit. Had great meals years back when in GR past here. Its a no more, why bother when there are so many wonderful alternatives to be made very quickly.
Our reservation was for 6:45, seated at 7:10. Service was steady but slow (waited 10 minutes before being greeted, another 5 to take drink order, another 5 to place food order, ran out of water twice). Food was excellent. I would definitely eat here again but will make sure we have 2 plus hours available.
