Charley's Crab - Grand Rapids Ratings and Reviews
Living downtown Grand Rapids, we sometimes forget about Charlies Crab. We went there this summer and for the 1st time sat out on the deck area which was fantastic. This time we just went there for an evening out, the food, drinks , service and ambiance were all wonderful. We will definitely be back
The potato crusted white fish entree that 3 of us ordered was not good. The potatoes weren’t cooked well enough & the flavor of the dish was bland.
I along with another person in our party was up all night sick from the meal.
I’m sorry but this wasn’t the first time I have had bad food there.
We had a lovely table along the Grand River. Beautiful with the snow falling and the Christmas decorations . The Sea Bass entree was absolutely delicious (and so were the Lobster and Scallops Entrees). All of the seafood is fresh and the presentation and preparation so well executed
Brunch on Sunday at Charley's Crab should have been a little more well organized. The omelet station and prime rib cutting station were manned by the same person so the wait was very long. Many items on the buffet were cold (the cheesy potatoes) but the selection was great. Servers may have been understaffed - we had to ask for more coffee, water was never refilled, a drink order was never filled. The venue is beautiful and we loved the view of the river. Please fix these items and we would love to come in again.
Service and food were excellent. The only downside is that we had a party of 10 and the tables they pushed together were up against a half wall, and one side of us sat in a long booth, while the other side was at chairs. Because the tables were pushed up to a halfwall, those that were on the booth side, had to ask all the adults on the booth side to scoot off the booth and stand up so they could get access to the brunch buffet. This was the only downside to our visit. Food, atmosphere and service were all great! For dinner this option would've been fine as we all would've been served, not needing to get up and down to make another trip to the brunch buffet.
I'm really shocked on the number of good reviews about this restaurant. We know a good meal when we see one and this was definitely not it. My Chilean sea bass was over cooked and dry. My date's and my smashed potatoes were very dry. Our appetizer, dynamite scallops, was the best thing we tasted that night. The ambience is nice. The views are lovely if you're lucky enough to sit near a window. Our waiter was a bit obnoxious and very slow for us being his only table which he told us we were. We went later in the evening. Maybe food is better earlier in the day when it's more fresh. Ours definitely was not fresh. Overall, disappointing for one appetizer, two drinks, and two entries for 105 bucks plus tip.
Went for the Sunday brunch and it was total waste of time & money. Tasteless and uninspired food - very surprised that this place is still open if this is the food they serve. Overpriced with some of the items available on every Holiday Inn breakfast buffet menu. The omelet station was a disaster - ran out of egg whites within 1 hour of opening, made the omelet and was dripping with oil and when told about it used his towel to absorb the oil. Main courses included a fish with salsa on top, prime rib was rare, ham was dry - with the money they charge was expecting much better quality of food. Avoid at all costs.
Food is consistently excellent. Service has been spotty of late and this visit was no exception. Poor pacing, cork in wine, poor knowledge of menu, and failure to deliver additional flatware even after two requests. Server was new, nervous and below average.
We were there at 4:15 on Sunday, there were only 2 tables with guests. We were seated, then a party of 3 were seated right next to us and not 5 minutes later another party of 3 was seated on the other side of us. The noise level escalated to where we could hear the other tables conversation. The whole restaurant was empty, it would have been nice to have had some space!
Thanksgiving buffet was delicious, everything was beautiful in their separate chafing dishes . Turkey with all the trimmings, and a carving station with prime rib and ham. Sushi, shrimp cocktail, mussels, and stuffed market cat fish. The dessert table was a thing of beauty- creme brulee, brownies, pies, cupcakes and all of them were tasty. Service was very pleasant and attentive, and the atmosphere was just the right blend of cozy and luxurious. It was the perfect place to eat before going to the Devos Place for a broadway show and to celebrate our daughter's 16th birthday.
We were there for Thanksgiving brunch, as we have been for many years.
Everything was perfect. The service and food were excellent.
My only complaint is the long walk from the valet drop off to the front door. It wasn’t designed with regard to the disabled. You can’t drop someone with a walker off at the door.
"I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The chowder soup and Ceasar salad was amazing and refreshing. The crab cakes were outstanding, as was the potato crusted whitefish. Everyone loved the vegetables, bread, rice. The desserts, hot fudge sunday and creme brûlée, was the Best! Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable. The view was awesome!"
I am unfamiliar with the "new" Grand Rapids area so had a little trouble trying to enter your parking area at 5:00 pm from the Grandville Street area which was my fault for not using the internet location guide.
I was very satisfied with the entire eating experience and would recommend Charles Crab to anyone.
Our group of three wanted a quiet area to visit and was given one. Good seating.
The server was excellent. She was personable, knew the menu well and was very attentive without being overly so. C. Crab is fortunate to have her.
My selection was the snapper and I must say it was perfect. Happy with the sides - very tasty.
Charley's Crab has been around for a long time, and for good reasons. The setting is fantastic along the riverfront. It's especially nice at night when the bridges are lit up. The food is consistently good if not great. The service, which in the past has been hit or miss, was exceptional during our last visit. It's a warm welcoming place - suitable for a romantic dinner or a casual get-together with friends. The Landry group knows what they're doing when it comes to managing a restaurant!
Went for early dinner on a Sunday. Quiet. Nice table overlooking river. Service was very good. Didn't go crazy on ordering...family had steaks and I had a spicy shrimp and pasta meal. It was good but not the greatest. I still love this restaurant though. The high ceilings, lighting, attentive staff, decent food...makes for a nice evening out.
Excellent location. Excellent continental upscale menu. Good balance of popular selections as well as new foodie items. Excellent interior design, giving great privacy and excellent views. The food was all prepared properly, excellent flavoring, and tasty sauces. Don't miss the Lobster Bisque.
