Disappointed in the service and the food. I have not been here in awhile because the last time, it was just fair in both the service and the food. I was hoping for an improvement.

We love Charley’s and make it a night out every time we attend a function downtown. They never disappoint us in every area. It gives us a perfect opportunity to make it a special occasion!

Slow service from the bar to the table. Wife ordered another glass of wine when meal was served, it came when the meal had been eaten. Not good. And the sea bass? Oily, not well prepared. The salmon plank? I've had better in a chain store like Outback. Interestingly, management comped the sea bass, not the second glass of wine. Another GR for us restaurant next time....

Good food, good service, good atmosphere. But value of amount of quality food to dollar amount is not as good as other quality restraunts in the greater grand rapids area.

My wife was celebrating her birthday and Charlie’s Crab was our first choice for a fine dining establishment. The food and service is excellent and the parking is very convenient to downtown. Nice job, and keep up the great work.

So happy to have enjoyed our wonderful lunch for my wife’s birthday. Sad to see the legacy close and on to new beginnings for this property, I’m sure a sky rise will replace this place!

we have gone to Charley's Crab for years and enjoyed the brunch. This visit it seemed like there was not as much food on the brunch, a lot of the items that are usually there were not. The food did not have very much taste and it was overall in our opinion an average brunch when it used to be exceptional.

Our Uber driver summed it up best when he asked, “why would you ever go to Charlie’s crab”. Unfortunately this was after dinner. For 3 plus decades, Charlie’s was a main stay in GR. It had been 20 plus years since I last visited. A great deal has changed over that time. In fact, about the only thing that hasn’t changed is the decor.

Our table of 7 waited 35 minutes to have our drink order delivered. While I would like to blame our server, the truth is that management gave her our 7 top and a 16 top back to back. At one point I thought she was going to cry. For reasons I cannot explain, no one seemed to want to help her. Which means, no one wanted to help us.

The appetizers of baked Brie, coconut shrimp and calamari were tasty. My wife and I also enjoyed the Butternut Squash Soup. The kids all ordered the steak (filet) and enjoyed there meal. That is where the good news ends.

My wife order that potato encrusted white fish. Imagine a Sunday morning breakfast at a diner. Then think about having a pile of under cooked hash browns. Then image there being some type of fish hidden underneath. Ugh.

But let’s talk red snapper. If you like oily translucent fish that causes you to spend the early mornings praising the porcelain thrown, then have at it. There is no way that this fish was fresh. I suspect Gordon Ramsey would have a field day in the walk in cooler.

The Muer family can and must do better.

We could hardly hear each other speak. Waitress was rude, she never game to our table. We were out of water, my steak was over done. We really we not happy at all. Charlie's Crab has Lost it's image in our book.

Arrived about 5 minutes prior to reservation. Had to wait 20 minutes beyond reservation time. After being seated waited another 10 minutes until server came to initially introduce himself and bring menus.

Best guess is they were understaffed for a Saturday evening. We were delayed being seated in spite of there being a section of about 8-12 tables that were not being used. There were other delays such as how long it took to bring us our drink order. When the waiter did bring our drink order, they had to serve a martini in a non-martini glass. The non-martini glad was no big deal but took that as another sign that they were short staff and were struggling to keep up with everything that needed to be done behind the scenes.

Food was good but was surprised and disappointed with the service.

Food was great! Wish there was more seafood. Our server was on top of it! I am disappointed that here was lipstick on the water glass and had to get a new one. Actually most of the glasses looked dirty and had fingerprints or food in them. The linens were dirty. I had a reservation at 12 and was not seated till about 12:25.

Only bad thing was we requested to sit by the windows and we were put in the middle of a walkway where everyone walked by for food yes we faced the water but really wanted to be next to the window not in the middle of traffic. It was kind of hard to enjoy the view

I usually write good reviews but this was not good. Short wait staff- left to a rushed waitress that left our food under the heater way too long my potato’s had a gloss finish due to sitting too long. The steak was also showing signs of sitting too long. It was not worth the 40$ per plate.

We had a disappointing time at a place we wouldn’t expect. Made 6pm reservations; were seated around 6:20. Not a huge deal - it was busy - but we thought making a reservation would eliminate a 20 minute wait. Waiter took our drink order and brought those in a reasonable time, then took our dinner order. Husband asked if he could substitute another vegetable for the root vegetables with his entree. Waiter didn’t say no, but didn’t offer any suggestions either. So guess what came with the entree? Root vegetables.
I ordered a bowl of Charlie’s Chowder - it was basically a bowl of tomato-based broth with a bunch of onions. No fish to speak of. I sent it back - the lady who took it agreed it wasn’t up to par - but she brought me back more of the same. (Lady took the soup because we never saw our waiter again)
It took almost an hour for our entrees to arrive (we both ordered a fish entree, so not sure why that would take so long. Never in that hour did our waiter come back to ask if we’d like another drink or anything, so when the food runner brought the entrees, we never had a chance to order wine with dinner. Food runner went and got our waiter - he came over and asked what we wanted- I said a wine list would be nice. Didn’t think to bring one??
Anyway, we waited for the wine, but after a few minutes I decided to start eating so I wouldn’t be eating cold fish. Both my snapper and my husbands salmon were overcooked, probably from sitting under heat lamps for almost an hour. Still no wine, so we told a manager to just cancel the wine, as we were almost done eating (also, my snapper was supposed to come with asparagus - I got TWO SPEARS). They comped the soup and my husbands salad as a consolation.

Horrible experience.

Everything was delicious! The service was fantastic! The only glitch was our to go order at the end was missing a side we ordered, but our fault for not double checking before we left and we didn't get charged for it. We have a new go to for seafood when we go to Grand Rapids.

I love Charley's Crab, but the Service that night was awful. I am not blaming the server. The kitchen could not get the food out fast enough. It was just not our table, even the drinks were slow to the table. (It was Valentine's Night, you promoted it and you knew what to expect, yet the service was NOT there.)
Not to mention the temperature in the place was COLD. Sorry, just being honest.

My husband and I still had to wait 15 minutes, eventhough I made reservations a week prior. The point of a reservation is to keep the seats OPEN at the reserved time! Our waitress took our order and disappeared for AN HOUR. We were the only table without bread. We got sick of waiting and decided to leave. We offered to pay for the sodas we barely drank, and the manager was called over. She seemed surprised that the waitress never returned with food. Luckily the manager offered to box up our order for us to take home, free of charge. We waited another 15 minutes, which tells us that the order was never put in. Seafood cooks decently quick. Returned home and ate the food, definitely not worth the amount of money we were prepared to pay.

First and last time coming to charley's crab. Was really looking forward to trying this place out and Honestly our service was terrible! Waited half hour to get our drinks. Another half hour to get our salad and bread total of an hour wait. Next when we ordered another drink it took another half hour wanted another one but didnt want to wait another half hour. Watched 4 other tables come in after us and leave before. Our server just wasn't on it dont plan on returning

It seems to me that the food quality has been going down a bit over the years. This latest trip I had shrimp and my wife had scallops. My shrimp was okay, the scallops we not cooked as well as we would have expected them to be here (kinda rubbery.) My clam chowder was more of a potato chowder, good, but not great.
I like the classic space here, always have.
The service was okay, not as attentive as I'd like, but it was a busy night.
Overall, I was after a good meal but didn't really get what I felt was my money's worth this time.
