Charley's Crab - Grand Rapids Ratings and Reviews
Our reservation was for 6:45, seated at 7:10. Service was steady but slow (waited 10 minutes before being greeted, another 5 to take drink order, another 5 to place food order, ran out of water twice). Food was excellent. I would definitely eat here again but will make sure we have 2 plus hours available.
Food was great, service was a bit lacking. The restaurant was not busy and we didn't have much attention paid us by our server. This dinner was for a special occasion - an elderly friend's belated birthday, and we had hoped to make it feel like a special evening for her.
Even though we had a reservation we had to wait about 20 minutes, very small inconvenience tho. Service was good, the food was good, not great, but good. Our table was nicely placed by the river which made for an enjoyable meal with our friends. Server did a very good job, was attentive without being bothersome. All staff were very courteous and friendly
This was the first time for my wife and I to visit Charley's Crab.
We had made reservations and when we arrived we were seated within 5 minutes.
Although my Blackberry Arnold Palmer tea was very bitter overall we had a wonderful experience very good food and our waiter was very friendly and did very well.
My wife and I do not go out to eat very often and we rarely spend over $100 for dinner, however my wife and I had a wonderful time and babies come see you again sometime in the future.
Thank you for the wonderful experience
Sincerely Stuart and Shannon Edwards
The location and food was very good, this surprised me. I choose this location because it was close to the hospital. The last time I ate there I swore I would not return because the food was so awful. The great disappointment this time was the lack of cleanliness. We sat near the corner window. The blinds had thick fur dust, as well as the heat registers and the fake plants. Above our heads the ceiling was peeling away and some areas had tape securing the crumbing. As I was eating, all I could think about was what the kitchen looked like, where they were cooking and storing my food. I was unhappy to see my soup served in an old worn out white bowl, as I was eating the soup down I could see the gray rubbed out sides. I guess it would have been better to go in the evening when it is dark. Not so sure I would go again.
We sat at a table by the window with a great view of the river. We had a new server and he did awesome. Very attentive and very pleasant. The food was outstanding and we had the Malbec wine rcommended and it was very nice. Only one thing that ruined the ambience: about halfway through our meal, three couples were seated behind us and one of the guys talked extremely loud and nonstop. It seemed like he was standing right behind me because his voice was so loud. But we didn’t stay that long after they were seated. So our overall experience was very pleasant.
Every year my husband and I go to Charles Crab. The service and experience this time was much different than years past. We waited a long time to even get water at our table. It was obvious that the waitress had way too many tables for NYE. I asked if I could get rice instead of potatoes and I was given a firm "no, we are allowing changes tonight". I was a bit disappointed by that since I was paying over $50 a meal. Then, I received my bill and that was incorrect as well. Something was definitely lacking this year. Food was OK. It was luke warm. I am not sure I will go back.
Despite restaurant being nearly empty and our previously submitted online reservation request for a window table for a special occasion we were shown to a crowded table next to the high traffic area busing and water stand. When we again requested a table w/window view and were asked to wait while hostess returned to stand for close study/scrutiny of their schedule. We've been through this drill many times at Charleys Crab and heard all the excuses about their reservations (we had one too) etc. This time, however, we were favored with at least 7 waitstaff (who had little to do as the restaurant was almost empty) huddle ~3-4 feet away around us listening! Finally, we obtained a decent table and finished eating and exited before any of the 4-5 nearby window tables showed up! Once again, it was poor performance and efficiency by the hostess station with the floor manager even giving us a snide "enjoy your meal" to top it off.
It's so much easier to be friendly and accommodating with guests, it's hard to know why they struggle with that. We've dined here for ~25 years, renting their private dining room etc. many times but such issues never fail to surprise me when showing up for a simple, quick meal with reservations...in a nearly empty restaurant no less.
Fiancé and I went out to celebrate some good news, her steak was ordered as medium well, came out as pretty rare, she sent it back, after our waitress noticed, and then came out again as medium rare...still a huge difference from medium well and not ok considering our bill was $150+, but only so much you can do before you let it ruin your night
Great tasting, perfectly cooked sea bass & veggies. Martha vineyard salad always a favorite.
Good service, great view—city lights over the Grand River.
Minor criticisms would be waiter’s strong aftershave that didn’t pair well with food! And, music was too loud; we were sitting close but not directly under a ceiling speaker.
In all, a great dinner.
The food was outstanding. The service by the waitress Nicolette was horrible, slow and disappointing. The drinks from the bar were poorly made and they only gave you a 1/2” in bottom of the glass. There was more ice than liquid . The waitress and bar tender was inept, poorly trained and had no business serving Charley’s Crab patrons! Very Very disappointing!
We had a reservation on Open Table at 7:15 but did not get a seat until 7:45. All other reservations on Open Table seat us as soon as we arrive. Then it took 10-15 min for our server to come by and ask what we wanted to drink. In the mean time one of the hostess gave us water but said nothing about our wait or when our server would be by. The food was great but they need to work on their service.
Entrees and desserts were excellent. Ordered the Brie for an appetizer but there was not enough bread to dip and what was on the plate was soggy. Bread for the table arrived eventually but too late to enjoy with the cheese. Waitress seemed a little flustered with the table next to us and unfortunately our service suffered from that experience.
This was a Christmas Eve dinner. The restaurant was busy and it was clear the staff was overwhelmed. Our waitress was curt and rude. Took 15 mins to get a drink. Food was served cool.
Great atmosphere but that is all.
The king crab legs were equal to Red Lobster quality. In the past they served two large legs. Now you get scraps.
Sorry but have to cross this place off our list. Too many other awesome choices in Grand Rapids.
We've been going to the Crab for special occasions for many years. It was our first time for the Christmas Eve brunch. Our reservation was for 1:30 p.m. Even though we thoroughly checked the website and spoke to the restaurant specifically about the time of our reservation, we were told that brunch ends at 2:30, but no one told us last call for food was at 2:00 p.m. This was a holiday and we were there to enjoy our meal, not eat and run. The manager came over and was very unsympathetic and failed to understand that they have a responsibility to alert customers to such a policy. They did ultimately offer to let us get a plate from the buffet to tie us over until they started serving from their regular menu at 2:30. The buffet was already picked over by 1:40 and some items were not available. The food from the regular menu was delicious, but by that time, our mood was no longer quite as festive. It was a shame that the manager especially was not more concerned about our disappointment about our holiday meal. There's lots of competition in GR now for good places to eat. Charley's Crab is going to have to return to its once exemplary customer service in order to compete.
Met with 3 co-workers for an afternoon lunch celebration. None of us had been here before. We all were impressed with the grandeur of the place. The view was excellent, our waitress friendly and attentive. The food was excellent and price was very reasonable for the value received.
Was rather disappointed, hardly any Christmas Décor, had requested window when booked, they said not available, place was almost dead! Out of the 4 of us, 2 had different menus, service was definitely not great. Was a let down this time for the amount of money we spent.
