Our anniversary. Have always enjoyed the atmosphere here and especially the food. Can always count on the food being good.
Fairly empty at 1:00 lunch meeting during the week. Good food, nice quiet place for a private meeting.
Food is always good at Charleys. Service was great, we went at 5:30 pm on a Sunday so it was too crowded at that time. The only issue I have is that the restaurant needs a major update on the furnishings. The paneling and wood are a dark brown, the upholstery is late 90's, and you can see where they did some repair work on the ceiling. They are sitting on a gold mine with the location but the ambiance is just not there.
The quality of food has really gone down. The Sunday buffet was very limited and low quality. Service was bad. Not going back again.
Our 50th wedding anniversary, food was great, wife praised crab cakes and shrimp scampi, lobster was good but little dry but butter fixed that. I had a filet mignon and w.as very tasty, waitress gave us a desert for our anniversary to share
Good food, sloooowwwww service. We waited a half hour AFTER being done for our check.
I always expect pricey so that was not the issue that I usually hear about. After I boasted to everyone about their famous bread, we received cold, kinda reheated, awful bread.
Waiter was not quick to catch on, seemed a bit new
Just brunch with my sister and brother. Great time, service was awesome..
There was nothing "poor" about the dining experience, but there was nothing "spectatular" about it either. The food was mediocre, but expected more from a fine dining establishment, and for the price.
Paul did a wonderful job as waiter. We enjoyed the restaurant very much
My wife ordered whitefish and it was very strange looking and tasteless. She sent it back with help from the Manager, Jill. The second round was just as unacceptable. We regularly frequent Charley’s and similar places, like Gandy Dancer in Ann Arbor, and have NEVER had an experience like this.
Jill took my wife’s entree of the bill, but after we showed her the rotted lemon wedge and the bland / gummy rice, that came with the meal, that gesture fell far short of what should have happened.
I recommend that if you are in Grand Rapids looking for a nice seafood restaurant, go somewhere else!!
always ask server if there are items on menu unavailable as the #1 choice my husband & i chose was then unavailable—should have informed us at the start—sign of a server who has not been trained—will think twice before dining here again
We were visiting from out of town and decided to dine here from a drive by. Food was absolutely delicious from the appetizer to dessert. Atmosphere is great for a nice night out and our server Evan gave us impeccable service!
Not busy and a peaceful setting outside on the deck. Received a complimentary dessert for our anniversary. The deck rails were very spidery but other than that the food and atmosphere was exceptional.
The best service!
Staff was very pleasant and accommodating! Food was perfectly prepared and flavorful! I highly recommend the warm towel service after your seafood! Sabrina was a wonderful server!
Rather good, but service a tad slow and it took longer than expected to receive our meals.
Very tasty food! Service was knowledgeable. Soup was salty, but politely returned and taken off our bill.
Terrific experience. Our server Sabrina was so engaging and attended to our every need. She explained all the dishes and recommended several good ys to choose from. Definitely will be back again and recommending it to all our family and friends.
Always great service & delicious menu. Visited for restaurant week & ordered one of the specials. Generous, tasty & great rolls w/butter & pate. The wine suggested by the waitress was excellent.
Our water was very friendly and very attentive, make sure that we had everything we wanted. The manager came to our table to see if we were enjoying our meal. An excellent place to enjoy a quaint evening and a good meal.
The seared salmon was very good but the strawberry short cake was really dry. When you check in here with Open Table the reservation is under your first name and the occasion was not recognized by the host or the server.
Service was good and attentive. We expected more seafood choices especially crab but they only had crab cakes as an appetizer. Taste of the Great Lakes was disappointing. Fish had no seasoning.
If the waitstaff is excellent than food that is nothing to rave about somehow tastes better. However if the waitstaff is bland and the food is bland then the experience of dining is loss in the disappointment of an establishment that you know can wow you. We were not wowed and it was restaurant week. For this you should have brought your A game.
Love the service and view of the river. Food was not that flavorful with the exception of the carving station. My expectations were that of Cooplands seafood brunch. However, this wasn't it.
Took my mom to brunch for her birthday, the food was incredible, and our server, Sabrina, gave us fantastic service!
Evan, our server was amazing. Very professional and personable as well. The new menu is fantastic.
The server needs to be trained to serve the customer. Very slow response to requests for water, drinks, bread, coffee, etc., and the dining room was nearly empty. Server didn't know how to clear a plate.
No one ensured sun wasn't in the eyes of customers. We needed to request shades be drawn, twice.
This restaurant is iconic in the region; everyone must go at least once. The food is delicious. The service is elegant, if sometimes on the slow side.
There were some mysteries on the night we visited. For instance, there seemed to be a birthday party involving a large group of infants, which made for some strange ambience. Also, we were not offered outdoor seating. Outdoor tables were not cleared promptly, therefore our view was of dirty dishes for the entire meal. Portions were somewhat parsimonious, but the prices were not. Our server told us there were no off-menu specials, but we heard two other tables being offered something that wasn't on the menu by the same server.
Food was very wonderful as we have a person who has some food allergies and the management and staff adjusted to her needs. Our waitress Charlotte was very attentive and Manager made 2 trips to our table to assure everything was to our liking. A great birthday for my wife.
At 5:30 in the evening they were out of several of the main dishes on the menu. I was really disappointed in the whole experience. Used to be one of my favorite restaurants---doubt I will go back.
We had a wonderful meal and our server was excellent!
Made reservation online and requested outdoor seating . When we got there we were told you can't reserve outdoor seating so we waited approx 45 minutes for an outdoor table. Waiter was great, food was great. Being a builder, I noticed the exterior of the building is showing signs of deferred maintenance, I would think for the prices charged, the management would like to also maintain a top rate appearance.
We sat outside on the deck which was lovely. We had a very good waiter but he was the only waiter outside with a lot of people at the tables. He did his best, but we all had a long wait because you did not have adequate staff for the amount of people. Also, I should have checked my email but that day they were having a special on two margaritas and two fish tacos which nobody told us about when we were there. I read about it on my email after we left.
Waited an hour for salad, another 15 minutes for hordrrves, another 20 minutes for dinner. 1:35 to get meal. We had a 6:30 pm reservation, arrived on time, headed to a concert that started at 8, missed first set.
Charley's is a great place to dine and park before enjoying an event at the Van Andel
great service. wonderful food. beautiful views. i would recommend the sunday brunch and everything else.
However, I would recommend with caution. It was my mother in law 92nd birthday. She wanted to go back because she celebrated her 90th there and the food was divine. That night the crab cakes were just okay, we had to correct our order twice and at 6 PM, they were already out of her favorite dessert raspberry sorbet. There was a big reception that night and we felt like a secondary necessity although our waitress was nice. From past experiences, we definitely expected a better experience.
Not a good value. While the food is very good, it's over- priced for what it is. The service is excellent.
Love this restaurant! Great servers, wonderful atmosphere, delightful views! A favorite and close by....quick drive from Kalamazoo! The food is always great! Wine and cocktails superb!
