This was the last night of Charlatan so my review is more of a warning for those visiting a restaurant on its last night. Many of the menu items were scratched out and the service was terrible. They also changed my favorite item's recipe but didn't change the name on the menu. Their chicken dish used to be a highlight but I received 2 over cooked pieces of chicken that I could barely bite into and our octopus appetizer was dry as well (both dishes used to be staples of ours). I only took a few bites of the chicken before telling the waiter about it and he acted as if he could care less that the plate was substandard. In its heyday, Charlatan was a great place with excellent food and ambience but I would suggest being better prepared for the last night. I completely understood not having a full menu but the significant drop in quality and service was the biggest disappointment.
I had seen Charlatan on Check Please and was excited to visit the restaurant. The food was good and the waitress was hard working and very nice. Unfortunately, there was only one waitress and the bartender didn’t show up for work either. It was a disappointing evening. I was so hyped and then the air was out of the balloon when we sat now and realized the situation. I give the waitress high marks for dealing with everything. As I said she was great.
My advice is to make sure the place is still open and staffed.
The bartender & our server were not interested in making us feel welcome. They both were just doing the minimum....no conversations.
We were excited after watching "Check Please" to plan my girlfriends birthday dinner at Charlatan. The meatball was amazing, but after that my steak was bland and her pasta plate was just okay.
The cocktails were very nice. The Grilled Octopus was dry. I expected lemon and oil and got (3) little dry pieces, (2) cooked carrots, and two purees....very dry. The main courses were interesting and good. Black Kale Spaghetti and Wild Boar Ragu Rigatoni. Very small dessert selection and nothing popped out as a must have. Service was okay but not very attentive.
The kale spaghetti was delicious! The old fashioned was also on point.
Absolutely unbelievable! Foo was phenomenal, wine list was superb, and the service was impeccable!
Was very disappointed with the food. The salad was bland and the risotto was over seasoned. Will not go back!
Waitress was the best, attentive, friendly, knowledgable but not buggy. Great menu options for sharing, everything creative and delish. Got a tad noisy and crowded but friendly vibe overall. My gal pal and I were among the oldest in there, but the crowd were nice.
Excellent bar with great handmade pasta.
A hidden gem... food was delish, wine was great, ambiance was perfect. Restaurant was packed but In a good way :)
My wife and I dined on Sunday night so the restaurant was not crowded at all. We ordered a bottle of wine, two appetizers , 4 different half-portion pastas and a desert to share.
The wine was excellent and priced well. The fried olives and focaccia were outstanding and we'll be making a run at duplicating the olives at home in the near future. The pasta can only be described as fantastic. Every one of them was prepared and seasoned perfectly. The portion sizes were ideal and the service was efficient and appropriately unobtrusive.
Charlatan might even beat Mario Batali's Babbo in my book for flavor and authenticity. We were served the best Italian meal we've eaten since being in Umbria a few years ago.
We were very impressed with everything. The hostess was super friendly, the waitstaff was nice and very efficient. The food was amazing and we loved the atmosphere. Thank you for a great dining experience!
The fresh pasta dishes were wonderful. Table spilt the monsterous Chicken Parm which was a little over the top but delicious. Friendly attentive service compliments the food.
We were pleasantly surprised with our experience at the Charlatan, as we had not been there, before. The service was attentive. The food was presented beautifully and was delicious. Small plates were small. Large portions provided plenty for take-home. The decor was tasteful, with a rustic, industrial feel. The wine had me thinking about it days later. We selected the Charlatan based on location, as we were going to an event at the United Center, after dinner. It was early in the evening, and was not yet busy. Timing and location turned out to be perfect for our next event.
Visiting from out of town and a local recommended this place. So glad we tool their advice and had dinner here, good was amazing! Excellent service. Next time we're in Chicago, we will definitely visit this place again.
They could not provide butter without garlic. My guest cannot eat garlic and that severely limited options from an already short menu. No simple mixed green salad option, nor a salad dressing without garlic; no decaf coffee. My friend was aghast. I chose poorly that night, greedily enticed by the OT bonus points. I won't easily return.
The kitchen was backed up so our order took a very long time -- but the restaurant was incredibly generous about the problem. It's a terrific place to have a great meal.
Spectacular. A true neighborhood gem. Home cooking from farm to table umm umm umm good. A small place but laid out nicely there is room for everyone. On street parking. Kind of place that every neighborhood should have. Well worth the visit.
Always a great meal. They forgot one of our entrees, so the flow was disrupted.
The trout was delicious as was the focaccia bread with garlic butter. The grilled calamari was unique first time I've had it without it being breaded and deep-fried. I liked it very much. The cocktails were interesting and the recommended wind was very good. The food was a little on the salty side. My husband had a half order of the chicken pasta. It was tasty but the ground chicken made my husband think he didn't have protein so he ordered a meatball in addition to his main entrée.
What was a post-Shakespeare in the park quick dinner turned out to be a new favorite place. The pasta was incredible. We will definitely be back.
We had reservations at 9 pm and 2 appetizers were sold out and the main entree of oxtail was considered not fresh enough to serve. There were also out of sparking water and the bottle of wine we ordered ...a montelchino bottle...was acidic and had to be sent back. This is our second time to the restaurant and we were expecting more !
Charlatan is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is always outstanding...the menu changes enough that even regulars can't get bored. The ambiance is comfortable and relaxed. The service is always friendly and efficient. There is lots of convenient parking available. A winning formula!
One of our fave restaurants. The food was amazing as always. The service wasn't, but this is the only time we've had a less-than-great server in the dozen times we've been there.
Great food- interesting menu
Server wasn't very attentive and never checked back on us once another server gave us our food .
Food is always excellent and executed very well. Wine selection also perfect for food to complement.
Service was great. Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive or annoying. Wine and drinks were great too. We ordered the grilled octopus as an appetizer. It was over cooked and tasted more like they took a torch to it verses actually grilling it. We had the kale spaghetti and the daily bolognese, which was a beef bolognese with paprika and something else that gave a bit of heat but nothing crazy as far as spicy food goes. Both pastas were tasty and we had plenty to share between two people with the full order of each pasta. It was quiet and not too busy, granted it was a Tuesday dinner so not sure how it is on the weekend as far as crowd and noise level. I'd go back for drinks, pasta and ambience (including the service) but I'd skip the appetizer.
We went for my father's birthday and everyone absolutely loved the appetizers and drinks. We were not as thrilled with the main courses but they were still good. Would definitely go again!
I've lived this place for a long time. Made a reservation because I was meeting a friend there who had never been. I usually sit at the bar, I believe it is quieter than the restaurant area.
excellent food, great service...but beware if you go with a group and don't plan on splitting the bill, the restaurant will not give you separate checks. will take as many credit cards as you choose to use but you have to figure out what each owes ....I have been there four times and will go back but only with check splitters...
It's high end spaghetti place. Fresh spaghetti takes 5 minutes to cook add 12 minutes for final plate. It took 45 minutes from order to first bowl of squid ink pasta. There were 3 other tables. One table had already finished dinner. Then the next two bowls 10 minutes after the first. And the final bowl five minutes later. The food was good, but the service was slow. In fact a group sat after me and got served before me. If I wasn't famished I'd walked out. Got comp'd another appetizer. Whoopy freakin doo.
I love the food and the place! Always a great experience. The only downfall is how loud It can get, makes it heard to hear...
The service was slow. Waiter forgot our wine order so it arrived after the appetizers. The appetizers were the best thing on the menu. Our entrees arrived cold and took a long time. It was obvious that they sat in the window. The food was below average, even after taking in the fact that it was cold. The waiter did comp a few items, but since the food wasn't very good it is unlikely I would go back.
Good, but not great. I expected a lot more for what we paid.
I have dined here a few times and had fantastic food, however this evening something was off. All of my food was terrible. Not the norm but needless to say I was disappointed.
Only complaint is that we were misguided on the amount of food to order. Other than that; 👌🏼
Love going to Charlatan...it's a great room, always an interesting and diverse crowd, the wait staff is attentive, and the food is amazing and most important; consistent! No matter the time of year or occasion, I'll continue to return. A Chicago favorite!
This was my second visit to Charlatan and it was just as delicious as the first. Great dishes for sharing! Love the short rib rotolo. Great vibes & great food!
I love the vibe of this place...the ambiance is very cozy. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The deep fried olives were amazing and the meatball was spicy and delicious. We shared 2 half orders of their homemade pasta and they were both outstanding. Sadly we didn't save room for dessert. Service was well-timed and friendly. I can't wait to go back!
