Charcoal Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We've been to Charcoal numerous times because its close to a theatre we frequent. Recently, they have changed their menu predominantly to small plates and appetizers. Of the few entrees that remain, we tried two and neither were very good. One of their featured foods is now octopus - not sure what that's about and we weren't that courageous. We miss the old offerings!
Not fantastic for the price, but not terrible. Server was excellent and very nice and attentive. Meal was only so-so. Chicken liver mousse was pretty good, but bacon wrapped dates, steak salad, and pear galette left much to be desired. Mushroom gnocchi was decent.
The service was great and so was the presentation of the food. The Nouveau Beef Bourginion was the best meal I’ve had in a long time. It’s new because it combined the savory wine sauce and seasonal root vegetables of slow braised French cooking with a delicious medium rare charcoal grilled hanger steak. A glass of their Spanish Rioja was the perfect pairing for this dish. What a great value! I would have expected to pay a lot more for this high quality meal.
I will definitely be back next time I travel to Denver.
This restaurant is equal to any restaurant in the Denver area. It compares favorably with Rioja and Mercantile. Starting with a baba ganoush and smoked salmon appetizers that were Innovative and delicious the meal progressed through beef bourguignon that was prepared in a different way with quality steak and a great sauce. Their salmon preparation was different than any I had ever tasted but was absolutely superb. The interior is comfortable and while not quiet the noise level permits conversation making it more desirable. Being able to park on the street in front of the restuarant makes the experience better.
Arrived at 7:00'ish on a Saturday night. Place was 70% empty which didn't seem like good news. Server came over about 15 minutes after we sat down. 20 minutes later, our drinks and appetizers came. At 8:15, we were still waiting for entrees. Had to ask server to go ahead and bring the check so we could get going to concert as soon as we ate. She apologized profusely and said (politely) that if we'd told her we were in a hurry, she would have expedited things. I guess that could be true, but an hour and a half and still no entree? In a 1/2 empty restaurant?
In any case, we finally got our food and we didn't have much problem getting to our show in time because the food was so bad that we couldn't finish more than a few bites.
On the bright side, the concert was great and my wife's food didn't decide to come bad up until we got home.
NOTE: I hardly ever write bad reviews, so this isn't coming from someone with ridiculous expectation. We just had a bad, bad experience.
Charcoal is a really wonderful restaurant. We began the meal with a babaganoush appetizer. This was a really Innovative dish with freshly baked eggplant. They used an Innovative mix of oils that made the dish better than usual and included whole pieces of roast eggplant on top of the dish. They did not have a mixed salad on the menu. However. When we asked for a chop salad they made a wonderful chopped salad with a variety of vegetables including some cheese and fruit. The flank steak dishes were wonderful including an delicious sauce. Salmon was as usual perfectly cooked and perfectly presented. This restaurant is on a par with Denver's best.
There were only a few of us in the restaurant for a lunch on Monday. People don't know what they're missing! I had the skuna salmon salad and I wanted to lick the plate. I typically like a little heartier lunch but this did the trick. Get in there people. This place is a real find!!
We needed a good restaurant for lunch close to the Supreme Court building, because Palettes closed. This place was not close, but not too far away, and the menu looked great. Generally, the food was excellent: very fresh, interesting, and flavorful. The portions were not huge, which was nice for a small eater. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The manager stopped by at the end to check on our experience, which was a very nice touch. We will be back.
This is run by a Swedish chef/owner with a quite interesting menu you can see online. It has an European type ambiance and serving size, and is a particularly good deal if you go during its Happy Hour. Excellent place for a nice meal.
My wife and I came here for dinner on our trip to Denver. The atmosphere was great, the wait staff were very nice and professional, and the food was excellent. We did the Chef's Tasting and it was worth every penny. I am fairly picky when it comes to restaurants and I would highly recommend this one.
Two friends and I shared a number of the items on the menu and all agreed that we had not had a tastier meal in some time. Everything was so flavorful and creative in presentation. The service was friendly, attentive, but not overbearing. Will definitely be back!
Enjoyed the updated menu! Second visit in as many weeks, but we've been coming here since they opened. Our party had a variety of the small plates which ended up being plenty, the spanish octopus was especially good. In the past the desserts have been kind of hit or miss, but this time we tried the olive oil chocolate cake which was fantastic. Our only sticking point were the cocktails - everything came filled to the brim with ice cubes. In previous incarnations the cocktails here were among my favorites in Denver, especially things like the Negroni which was more intense with a single large cube of ice. Now its more like a glass of Negroni flavored water. But we'll be back for certain.
This was my second time dining here and we weren't sorry we returned! The food choices are original (I had the lobster 3-ways special - fabulous!). Appetizers, hangar steak, wine choices, service, but I could go on. If you're in Denver this place is a MUST.
Charcoal is always the answer when asked where do we want to go for dinner. It is close to downtown, without the driving/parking hassles -. I always get whatever fish is on the menu - the preparation is consistently excellent. The bacon wrapped dates are great. Most people like the wine list but I think their cocktails are interesting and delicious. The menu has changed and is grouped by content rather than course, so that's a bit confusing
Great food, all prepared just a bit uniquely, tasted wonderful. We had 4 of us and order a variety of plates and shared everything. Everything we ordered we would order again. Biggest standoutra for us was the eggplant baba ganoush, grilled salmon and hangar steak... but we wouldn't turn down any of the other dishes either. Excellent service also.
Charcoal provides a consistently outstanding restaurant experience. From the ease of parking on the street in front of the restaurant to the comfortable seating made possible by the selection of comfortable chairs. Every part of our meal from a Ratatouille appetizer to a perfectly prepared salmon dish and a hanger steak that could not have been done better. The restaurant is upgraded its bread and appetizers selections. Charcoal seems to get better with each visit.
All the food was excellent. Thought the entree portions were a little small for the price. The "corn risotto" didn't contain any actual risotto so that was a little misleading. But none the less, food tasted great and the server tried to be attentive. Will be back for sure!
The service was terrific. My mate has some very real issues with some foods/spices and Matt really went out of his way to go over the menu with her and to make sure that she would have no problems. He suggested alterations and substiutions that helped a lot. Once the ordering wsa done we split several items. We agreed that the Hanger steak was the best we had ever had. It was an outstanding experience.
My boyfriend and I had dinner here last weekend. We got there around 6:30 and it wasn't busy at all - we didn't really even need the reservations we'd made. The restaurant is nicely decorated -- it felt like a date night place. I liked it. We both ordered the hangar steak. The portions on the sides (greens & corn) were extremely sparse -- to the point where the plate looked oddly empty. However, the flavor of the steak itself was spot-on. Really delicious. Better than most steakhouses we've been to in Denver, actually. (With the exception of Shanahan's and Ocean Prime, our favorites.) I'd definitely go back -- I'd just ask for an extra helping of corn. :)
Food was great but service was off. We had reservations but weren't seated until 20 min later and there were plenty of open tables. Tried to get a drink at the bar while we waited but were completely ignored. It took a while for anyone to take our order, they forgot our appetizers and the portion was so small. The steak was amazing and a fine portion, but on the menu was noted to have risotto and arugula but really it was on a bed of about 20 corn kernels with a few pieces of greens. We asked to double our app (the bacon wrapped dates) so we would get 4 instead of 2. They initially said they could comp because they forgot but made sure we knew it was only the 2 and not 4 that would be (we're talking $5 here...). The hostess was good running and overall just a weird experience.
Anyway, idk if they had a ton of people call out or were short staffed to begin with but considering all the amazing restaurants in Denver they were not up to par. It's a shame because the food was pretty good.
Food was incredible. Got the lobster special (Fridays only), and my fiancé got the Salmon. Both were absolutely delicious. The biggest problem was the wait time. We waited for 45 minutes before we got our food. The times in between the lobster dish courses was absurd, like about 20 minutes. The restaurant wasn't that busy, but it looked understaffed. Hopefully that wait time can be fixed in the future.
