Went for brunch, only one lunch item on the brunch menu - a burger. It was good, fries were excellent. At brunch I expect both lunch and breakfast options. Breakfast options weren’t super appealing to me. The restaurant is much better for dinner. I’d recommend adjustments to the brunch menu to compete with other restaurants on the street, all who were packed, unlike Charcoal.
Fair experience overall...food was ok, service was ok, bloody Mary’s were bad
This was one of the worst brunch experiences we have ever had. Our server took about 15 minutes to bring our drinks and then likely forgot to put in our food order. Everyone in the restaurant who arrived after us was finished eating before our food arrived. Someone brought us an appetizer to compensate for our food not arriving but then lied about the reason as the server gave a different reason. The food was not hot and also not correct. We were very disappointed in not only the poor service and quality but also the complete lack of honesty and accountability.
Nine of us had brunch together last Saturday, and we all enjoyed our food immensely. I had the Beef Brisket Hash entree and it was perfectly portioned and quite delicious. They were very accommodating about dietary needs/preferences, and splitting checks between a few of the couples. Cocktails were "healthy" pours, and the three people who had Bloody Marys said they were great - not sure why other reviewers were disappointed, unless they had a different bartender! Our server did a great job handling the larger group -- the initial drink order took a little while to get started, but only because she thought we were waiting for the last of our party to arrive. Once served, she stayed on top of replenishments. I recommend Charcoal Bistro and will return!
We had a great dinner. Everything was seasoned absolutely proper. Our server asked about any limitations up front and at the end of the evening Chef Patrick stopped by to have a chat. Thank you!
The food was excellent but our waiter seemed uninterested in providing service other than the basics. Would definitely go back but hope next time to get a different server.
The menu was perfect, the exact mix of all dietary choices available to todays diner.
We had brunch last weekend and the food was very good. I found the overall ambiance lacking as the sleek spare tables felt more diner-ish while the interior seemed more modern and upscale. Seems like they should marry the two once they determine what message they want to send about the dining experience.
Charcoal Bistro is fantastic! 11 of us had brunch on Sunday and we ordered two of the dishes on the menu as "appetizers" and then each ordered a meal - everything we had was perfect, full of flavor and all brought out in a timely manner. The service was awesome!!! The food was so delicious!
Great place and great food, just turn up the heater when it's 10 degrees outside.
Service was great! She was very attentive and able to accomodate. The food came out hot and delicious. Bathroom was nice and big, will come back!
Love the decoration, the atmosphere, the food, and wine. Definitely cannot wait to come back
Great food. Great service. Really expensive beer.
We love this neighborhood restaurant. Brunch and dinner, all excellent.
The meal was very tasty, and a good value for DRW. Service was a tad slow, but friendly wait staff
Good food. Kitchen seemed a bit overwhelmed with it being restaurant week and food was a bit slow to come out. But, overall a solid experience. Nice space.
Friends in town
excellent food, service, and cocktails - the Feta Mousse is outstanding!
Very good. Went for Restaurant Week and they opened up their whole menu, not just a brief selection. All food was delicious. (Cod and pancake dessert platter were slightly overdone, but minor). Waitress was very attentive. Overall, great value. Would definitely go back.
Very cold draft every time the door opened
I hardly write reviews but I felt the need to after last night. My boyfriend and I went there for the Valentine's Day special they were running there and had a very bad experience.
1. We had a reservation at 8:30pm and weren't sat until 9pm, our drink order wasn't taken till 9:15.
2. Our waiter was very inattentive, distracted, soft spoken and vague( we couldn't understand him at all) he hardly checked on us.
3. There were out of some of thue courses on the menu by the time we got there.. NY strip instead of Ribeye, no sunchoke soup.
4. Before we even got our main course, the host was already taking a tray of shots back to the kitchen . Not only that, while we were finishing our meal, a strong odor of marijuana started wafting from the kitchen to our table. THe host was already drinking at a table with other guests. I understand Valentine's Day dining is stressful but at least wait until your guests leave to celebrate or be more discreet.
The only reason I gave two stars was because the food itself was great, the service was horrible and for paying close to 200 dollars for a meal on a special occasion, I was VERY underwhelmed and a little insulted with the lack of respect and care we received.
I don't know if it was the busyness of the holiday or what, but we will not be back.
We were promised seats at the bar for our St. Valentine's reservation and were pleasantly surprised to receive a table. Thanks Matt. Our waiter Josh was very efficient and nice. Excellent food. The sunchoke soup came in an enormous bowl and I really would have enjoyed a somewhat larger portion. On the other hand, the cake portions were too large.
This was valentines day;the fixe prix menu. The tastes were exceptional. I thought that the soup serving was a bit small - leaving me looking for more - but a wonderful concoction. The steak and scallops were excellent. The only real disappointment was the princess cake desert, which was hard as a rock and largely tasteless. Very surprising, as we have been to Charcoal several times and think that the preparations are excellent.
Went for the Valentine’s Day fare- pleasant place with nice ambiance but didn’t care for the food. Scallops were too salty and the dessert was hard and dry. Other courses were decent but not spectacular
Always great to experience Chef Patrik's creativity and approach. The team knows how to deliver a memorable and exquisite time. The food is fantastic! Give it a try if you haven't and you will regulars like we are.
This restaurant seems to be a well kept secret because you can get in!! Most recently we went for brunch and, best part, I could make a reservation. I live in Wash Park so it’s a great walk for me. The owner is very nice, service is great and the food is delicious!
Bacon wrapped dates...yum!
Today was the first time we have gone to Charcoal Bistro. We both ordered from the lunch specials, he had the Swedish meatballs and I had the bolognaise. They both came with a fantastic arugula salad with just the right amount of cheese, dressing and onion. My dish was so delicious, it reminded me of the bolognaise I had at a restaurant in Rome called Mario's. CB serves it over gnocchi and some small chunks of mozzerella and puts a few arugula leaves on top, a perfect combination. The Swedish meatballs were equally enjoyed by my husband. We are looking forward to our next visit.
We all enjoyed our dinner and are planning to return.
Food was fabulous! Service was friendly!
Outstanding menu with great cocktails. My spouse is vegan and they easily catered to him with a tasty creation. We love the space and go there for both special occasions or when we want to chill.
Wonderful vegan meal! We went on a Thursday evening, enjoyed the special Vegan menu. Excited to see restaurants preparing more plants based meals.
We were the only two in the restaurant on a Tuesday which made for a perfect dining night out. Menu was inventive, but not too much so, and a good wine list. We'll have to try it on a busier night to see if the stars hold true. RECOMMEND.
The food was excellent! We had the Swedish meatballs and a pork chop as our entrees, and we had 3 of the small plates. Everything was great. It was quiet, warm, and has a great atmosphere. We will definitely be back!!
Great food and great service
We went for New Years Eve dinner. The menu was la carte with different options, but not the surf and turf burger which was one thing that a friend wanted prior to coming, BUT the chef did it for him. :) It was very good! Steak was cooked to perfection.
only bad taste with restaurant was that I didn't get a call ahead to confirm table on such a busy night with a big group... I had to call and Facebook them. I would go back sure for given the nice location and ambiance.
First time and we we're happy with our choice. Early NYEve dinner. Busy but not noisy.
Pleasant and helpful wait person. Only shortcoming was the "crispy Brussel sprouts" which were ordinary and not crispy. I will return.
Awesome, creative menu. Loved the very dish.
Wonderful, start to finish! The food is absolutely spectacular. Always special and superb! Service is impeccable. I am a huge fan and recommend without hesitation.
the worst food ever,,, forget it,.. by mistake yelp had a good review.. I think they have never b been in a restaurant and do not want to be,,.. It could not have been worse
The appetizers we had were great. I highly recommend the Brussels sprouts and bacon wrapped dates. Interesting cocktails. Our entrees were just ok. My pork schnitzel was over cooked and dry. The prime rib did not have much taste. We thought with all the positive ratings it would be better. It was our first visit and we agreed that we should give it another chance.
