Char - Jackson Ratings and Reviews
Had an early Sunday brunch there for the first time wityh my wife and her mother. We shared spinach crisp (meatless) appetizer which was FABLOUS and gumbo which was just average. Both women had the Southern Style “Benny” which was kind of a huge plate of food but they liked it quite well even if they did not eat it all. I had the Crawfish, Lump Crab and Andouille Sausage Creole Sauté which sounds better than it was. The protein was swimming in a cream and flour based béchamel style sauce that had been liberably dosed with cayene pepper. On the edge of too hot for me and I like hot stuff a lot. We all shared a piece of caramel cheesecake which was superb. The baugettes were as unhealthy as always ... piping hot and delicious.
I ordered the red fish. Though it was edible,it wasn’t that good and the value of the meal wasn’t worth it. The sauce for the fish was okay... basically, the taste didn’t match the value I paid and I didn’t expect it to be that way. Did you change your chef? I dine at Char often and the food seems a bit off from what I’m used to. However, the service and the desserts are still great...
Normally we come here once a month just to get out and have a good steak. We have come here since they expanded and food was great. We always look forward to the surf and turf special with the shrimp, filet and crab cake. This time my wife and I both had to send our steaks back for being over cooked. This is not a problem and I understand things can happen; however, When our steaks were cooked for the second time, the meat seemed like a lower grade than a normal char steak and had absolutely no flavor. It’s like they just picked them out and put them on the grill. This is not the normal Char we have known for years. They were topped with crab meat which was good but we really missed the crab cakes on the side. It will be a while before we return to your restaurant. We might have to find a different steak in town. However, on a positive note, Hannah was our waitress and she did a fantastic job. She was very attentive to our needs and wanted to make our meal was absolutely perfect. I just wish our food could have had the same quality as our server.
I usual come on Sundays. The fried chicken is almost always great. However, for last couple visits the chicken was not all that great. One visit, I had to send it back because it was too greasy. The second piece was great. The most recent time the chicken wing was a bit tough and not crispy. I didn’t send it back because I had enough to eat.
Char was a dissapointment. We had made a reservation but still had to wait for a table and then had to wait for service. The waitress was friendly and polite. The food was a miss. Very chewy duck and tough Veal Oscar. We didn't even stick around for dessert
I had requested to have Caroline T. as the server, as she had shone on two previous visits. She made the difference this time, and deserves to be complimented on her bearing and poise. The food is excellent and a good value. The wine is excellent but overpriced. The noise makes conversation difficult in a booth but might be manageable sitting next to one another at a table or side-by-side in a booth. Next time I will try for 2pm and see if the crown has thinned enough to help reduce the sound level.
