Very average. The food was decent but very small portions, they seem to be having an identity crisis and can't figure out what kind of restaurant they want to be. Service was great, everything else was marginal at best. Felt very rushed, even though we were one of only 3 tables in there.
Food was awesome, and drinks were great. Service was awesome as well. We had a wonderful experience over all.
The food is great, their current menu features various cuisines all over the world. Mostly spicy and their specialty is shareable plates (small servings). We spent $88, pretty full and food tasted great but would probably not cone back anymore, it’s quite pricey for small servings.
I think they must have changed the chef because when it first started the food was amazing, but this time food was not very good, somewhat cold, a bit expensive for the portions they give out and the seasoning was quite bland
The food was very bland and the meats were really tough. The drinks were alright but you can't have some of the menu upstairs, the patio was available but they ran out of propane so it was cold. Overall wouldn't waste my time again.
Food was amazing, our server wasn't too friendly to start but warmed up eventually. Table behind us was quite loud but that was not the restaurants fault. Overall great night!
This was my first visit to Chakalaka and I will definitely go back. The staff are great, the food is unigue and delicious. They also have a beautifully decorated room on the lower level which you can use for photographs.
The service here was great, and so were the cocktails. However, the food was just ok... the hot rock steak and lobster was SO greasy, and the table was so small that we both got smattered all over with grease. The lobster was hard to time and turned out rubbery and kind of flavourless, and the beef was the toughest I've ever had. The sauces that came with it were just ok.
I normally do not write reviews, but felt compelled to in this case. First time here and heard pretty good things and wanted to check it out. Sat on the front patio, took forever for our server to come say hi. We ordered chips and guac and the gyozas to start…got the guac right away…barely even mashed. Ordered food, very unimpressive, I get that it’s tapas but the portions are ridiculous. Still no gyozas though, so I asked and the hostess said they only open at 5 (our reservation time) and they didn’t expect so many walk ins…so the kitchen is backed up…ok fine…another 20min go by, we ask our server, he says he’ll check…another 20min still no gyozas…ask him again, he says and I quote “I don’t know, I’m too busy and haven’t checked” they finally come out after over an hour from ordering them, even though I saw 2 other tables get theirs before us…clearly something was missed. I only was able to order 2 drinks, my bf had 1, cuz he was never around to order more…after all this…got the bill and had to pay for the gyozas! He knew we were clearly frustrated and didn’t even bother informing a manager to come check on us or anything. No apology, nothing to ensure we came back or made us feel like this isn’t the norm….when we left, we looked at eachother and said “wow, that was terrible”
Absolutely awful and will never go back there, super disappointing.
Like I said, I don’t normally write reviews, but in this case, you guys need to know, and hopefully can do better.
Great food and friendly staff. Great date night with tapas and fun drinks
I was excited to try Chakalaka and was pleasantly surprised with how great it was! The drinks and tapas were delicious and affordably priced. The presentation of the food and drinks was also very nice, the service was great, and the ambiance was nice and lively
The food came out very quickly after we ordered and I did advise Yasmin when she called the next day for a review. The food was cold and unappetizing. I was told I would get a $25 open table credit but it hasn’t appeared. Not sure what’s happening. I am not sure if I would return
The food was amazing and the service was excellent
This place is so wonderful and tasty. Perfect sized dishes for sharing between two people. Gorgeous interior. The hostess Yasmine (Jasmine?) was so lovely, as was our server. Lots of flavour in all the dishes. My only recommendation to the kitchen would be that I found the brussel sprouts a little undercooked. I would recommend blanching them before grilling them so that they aren't so tough on the jaws and to remove a bit of the bitterness. Otherwise everything was perfect and will definitely be back.
Really fun place to go. Went for date night and we all loved the steak and lobster, and tried a few different skewers. Some drinks were really strong, but i loved that you can try them on the flight board if you wanted to test them out first. Photo room downstairs was super cool!
Happy hour pricing for skewers is worth it. Not sure they are worth the regular pricing. Kind of disappointed in the cocktails, much better cocktails for much better pricing almost anywhere else on 17th.
Portions were incredibly small, service was very very slow and we left starving
My wife and I went for dinner at Chakalaka and were really pleased with the service we received, the food was delicious and the drinks were fun. I will definitely come back and eat this place again.
Was not impressed with the food whatsoever
Cocktails good. Food awful!
Oyster night was a hit with the girls! Chakalaka's tapas menu is so good the variety is awesome and everything is delicious. I will definitely be going back.
Chakalaka is a whole vibe. Amazing experience with delicious and very flavourful food. Will definitely be back to dine again.
I really enjoyed the service I received at Chakalaka.
As soon as we were sat down the server was there with a huge smile on her face and asked what kind of water we wanted either bottled/fizzy or still water.
I asked for a non alcoholic tropical drink and she corrected said, "Oh you mean a Mocktail?" I liked the way the food was plated and the fact that before I start eating, the serve would explain to me what I ordered.
I loved the ambience and the music just reminded me of me of Africa and the fact that its providing a different experience for people who do not know what the name "Chakalaka" means and where it originates from.
If anyone is looking to experience exotic tastes this is the place to be.
I have already recommended this restaurant to my friends. I like the way they make everyone feel special and they always ask if you are celebrating any special occasion, be it a birthday or anniversary. The staff will help you celebrate this with you by bringing sparklers, making the guests feel special.
I have seen a lot of celebrities' coming to Chakalaka with Limousines, even lots of women celebrating their bachelorette parties and many more.
'Thank Chakalaka staff for the memorable experience we had there.
Good was good but they were out of a lot of menu items. For desert the Ferris wheel only had about half of the items listed and try substituted basic Walmart chocolates for the cakesicles
Server was good food was good drinks were very good but overall just average
We had a great experience! The host was lovely, and our server explained everything we needed to know about the menu and happy hour! The manager Mary checked in on us and made sure everything was perfect. We loved the food and drinks!
Yasmeen was AMAZING!!! Atmosphere was awesome. Food was a great experience and the music was FIRE.
Super loud & noisy. We sat downstairs. Way too much smell & smokiness from the kitchen. Their fire alarm went off due to their smokey kitchen which blared in our ears for atleast 20 mins until the fire department had to show up to turn it off!
Food was subpar. Jerk chicken tasted bland, more like teriyaki glaze. The shrimp skewers were dry and flavors pretty subpar.
We were waiting about 25 mins just to get a server to acknowledge us. But later in the night, a server (looks like she was in charge) came over and actually made the night more pleasant. She explained the waitress assigned to our table didn’t show up for work, if all the server was like her it would make this place so much better.
The food was alright, nothing standout but overall the food is what we expected. Value is placed on the ambiance and not the menu item.
I had better Japanese skewers elsewhere. The place is great for “let’s try a new place” but it need to establish itself to be a a go-to place eg The Keg for a steak.
I would definitely recommend it to others to at least try.
Great ambience, customer service was exceptional.
Good experience here, however only part of their menu is available if you sit on the rooftop bar. Got a little loud near 8:30 when they had a DJ come in.
Food was tasty. Would recommend the skewers, the Caribbean chicken was flavourful and juicy.
be aware that many items on the menu are pretty spicy, and food was cold, the raspberry coctail is from a tap and it tastes like fizzy water with raspberry juice in it. The ambiance was nice, the waiter brought me a different coctail free of charge, and the room in the basement is very cool for photos.
Everything was great and we got to experience some exotic meat.
Waitresses were not knowledgeable on the menu and questions were answered incorrectly and wrong items were brought to table for that reason. Wish the restaurant was closer to the core on 17th.
Will probably visit again.
The vibe and atmosphere was great! The patio on the roof was beautiful to eat such delicious food to the sunset all around great place
We walked out, they sat us in a middle table right in the path of the servers, my wife got bumped into several times. She got sprayed with beer from the bartender pouring draught. All this before we even got water. We kindly asked if we could sit at the empty table on the patio. The answer was ‘no’ we cannot move you. That table sat empty for the 10 minutes we sat there contemplating leaving. It was loud and service looked unbelievably slow. I hope it was just a busy saturday dumpster fire. But not sure if I will give a try any other time.
I loved it.. The vibe was awesome. I am definitely coming back.
Very small portions for the price. For example the ceviche is 3 pieces of shrimp on 3 tortilla chips. Lame.
Second time here and I love it
Everything was amazing but the music is WAY too loud downstairs so we sat upstairs. Missed out on a big portion of the menu
The positives: Our server was very nice and prompt. The cocktails were tasty (but overpriced) and the appies had good flavour (but were ludicrously small portions).
Negatives: The bottom level was empty, and some of the staff were sitting around. It was my husband and my anniversary, so I really wanted some nice atmosphere. We decided to go upstairs, even though I knew most of the stuff I wanted to eat wasn't available up there. We were seated in an awkward table, behind a pillar (there goes my atmosphere). The downstairs menu had some good lucking, reasonably priced cocktails, but upstairs they were $18 (?!). The food menu upstairs wasn't quite my jam, but we decided to enjoy some snacks. We got the dumplings, chicken skewers and shrimp skewers. The portions were TINY. I get that they are only $7, but even if you doubled them up, they would be small. We ended up leaving and going to Lulu for dinner.
Love tapas and have been looking forward to trying this place.
