we think of central market first whenever we are treating ourselves to a pricey dinner
The food is fresh and inventive w/out trying too hard. Great winelist and the service is nearly always top-notch. Didn't appreciate our server slapping the check down in the middle of dessert on this particular night, but we wrote it off as a fluke. Love CM!
We had an excellent dinner and really enjoyed the whole evening. The halibut cheeks starter was quite wonderful, the duck was sublime, and the macaroons were everything I could desire in a dessert. We had wonderful California wines, and enjoyed every minute of our visit.
The food is usually very good at Central Market, but the service has been universally off each time (and it's been about a dozen) that I've been here for dinner. Whether is late delivery of drinks or a simple ignoring of my table. It's consistent and a problem for this establishment.
You go back for the food, and I have, you think twice about whether you'd like to because of the service.
Central Market doesn't disappoint. The food is top-notch - always very fresh, creative, perfectly seasoned and delivered to the table at exactly the right time. It's not the cheapest place in town, but given the consistently high quality and locally sourced ingredients, it's worth every penny and provides good value. This is the place I recommend to out of town visitors in search of a memorable meal.
The evening was perfect! Our server (I don't remember her name and the check identified her as #11) was knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, and took the time to explain the restaurant's local pig farm to us. Everyone in our party of four had some food allergies and she was diligent in working with the kitchen and us to ensure that we had an allergen-free delightful dining experience. The oysters were amazing! The leg of lamb was beautiful and the two who ordered it devoured every morsel, and the scallops with vegetables were perfectly prepared, tender, flavorful, and delectable. The sea trout was melt-in-your-mouth good and served with a simple accompaniment of fermented carrots, and guacamole. The homemade bread was fantastic, as were the strawberry shortcake and butterscotch pot of cream. We will be back and request server #11.
Dinner was good but uneven. Side of grilled vegetables were so charred they had to be sent back. Fish, although request was for "fully cooked, not raw in center" was served so well done and dry.....not good. The appetizers were great, service very good. Kitchen was uneven.
Room was a little noisy and warm in the early evening. Larger open space. Farm chic / antique market decor. Food was delicious. Service was smooth and relaxed (but not overly familiar). We were well taken care of. We sampled some of their own farm raised meats and they were superb. We would go again.
We had been by in the morning , saw the posted menu and made some choices then and there for that night. When we arrived at the restaurant, we noticed that the menu was different. Our server went into the kitchen to see if they could make last night's dishes for us. When they couldn't (the chef even came out to talk with us), she suggested a couple of dishes that would cover some of the items we wanted. Her suggestions were spot on, grilled corn with cojito cheese, an heirloom tomato and burrata cheese appetizer, and we added a baby gem salad and a grilled scallops main dish. Delicious food, great service...what else could you ask for?
As always, an amazing meal. Always nice to have Tony stop by to chat as well. I loved my sea scallops, my friend thought her ravioli was the best she'd ever had... everything was delicious. My husband and I always start with the wonderful little gem salad to share. You can't miss with Central Market!
I took my nine year old daughter and we went in for the first time. The chef visited our table twice and was very pleasant and friendly. Needless to say, my daughter ate everything on her plate (sea bass)! I had ine of the best sirloin steaks I have ever eaten in my life. The butterscotch pudding was extrordinary and a great way to finish off our lovely meal.
What a gem of a place! We love venturing out to new towns & coming from St. Helena we adore the old fashioned town of Petaluma, but also where we live we have excellent restaurants so we are very spoiled. Central Market has a vintage look & feel, the decor is minimal in this old brick building but fresh & fits the country image of farm to table. We enjoyed sharing our meal. My favorite was the seared scallops. A friend had told me the scallops & the mussels were incredible but they had no mussels the night we dined. The chef was very sweet to come out of the kitchen to greet us & he then sent us out one of his special appetizers. Everything is excellent, with fresh ingredients & creative recipes. Dessert was to die for! A seasonal Santa Rosa Plum Cake that was moist with the plums baked into it served with a dallop of whipped cream. We will definitely be back!
Seriously some of the best food ever. I loved every dish. We opted for a 3 course meal each, which left the 2 of us too full to finish or main course! Fig/ bacon/ blue cheese, brentwood (?) Corn, halibut cheeks, beet salad, wagyu beef, and short ribs were what we had. AMAZING. I will 1000% be going back sometime, and sharing my experience with friends.
Picked it because it is farm to table and great menu. So many great choices, it was hard to decide. The server was extremely helpful for deciding what to get. A little noisy but that's typical with high ceilings. Met the chef, very gracious. Will definitely go back.
Best dining experience in years! For anyone who truly appreciates food sourced from local markets (meats, dairy, garden), this is the place to go. Located in downtown Petaluma, it is a rare find to have encountered a chef who really cares about what he and his team are preparing. His wait staff and everyone on his team are knowledgeable, caring and super efficient. Giving it 5 stars is not enough. I will most certainly be returning and bringing my friends. (We are all wine and food snobs who live in Healdsburg but appreciate fabulous food in a relaxing atmosphere).
