Central Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
Beautiful environment, wonderful interior decorating, good ambiance and sound travel, I liked the vibe and the location; the service was fine. The food wasn't great. A cold mushroom dish, basic fermented foods, a decent salad and an ever better cold trout dish. Ferments in tiny masonry jars, mushrooms in a wooden bowl, tiny trout on an Ikea plate. There's an old saying, let's not try to reinvent the wheel. Love the place but let's stick to basic plates so all energy and focus can be placed on improving the menu.
We made a Xmas Eve reservation through Yelp at a different place and the restaurant was closed, so we lucked out with this last minute reservation. Our server Corrine was great, with recommendations for her favorite dishes, and just really friendly. We shared a delicious chicory salad and then two pasta dishes, both so fresh and tasty. Mine was the dungeness crab and really tasted like fresh crab. We selected the cheapest wine on the menu ($45/bottle), which was actually very good, but the wine prices generally were a bit steep for us.
We'll definitely be back!
I had been to CK a few years back and it was a memorable meal. The most recent visit was disappointing across the board. The service was ok, but our designated server was cold at best. The appetizers sounded interesting but in actuality we’re underwhelming in terms of flavor. The mains were, two pastas and th Duck were odd in flavor. I am a foodie and love to try new things, but the flavors did not meld and my pasta was overly sour. This was a special occasion so I had high hopes, but CK didn’t deliver.
The food and service was excellent! Our meals spanned a wide gambit from short ribs to seafood to salad.
Definitely a place I would recommend and visit again.
The portions were a little smaller than I expected for the price, but in retrospect the quality made up for the portion size.
Took my son for his 23rd birthday and it was excellent. Did the tasting menu with the wine pairings and everything they brought was amazing. It was a lot of food. Fresh bread with burrata cheese, pate, and antipasti to start, grilled broccoli salad with soft boiled egg, two pasta dishes (beet ravioli and pork short rib pasta), a main course with beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, and carrots), followed by an amazing dessert with brownie, caramel, and coffee ice cream layered in a jar! Overall a foodie's smile for all the surprises. Some items were on the menu, others not.
I love this restaurant. Every time I have come here, the menu has varied slightly, but without fail everything I have ever ordered is delicious. The menu is based on what items are locally in season, and each dish is incredibly well thought out, with each component playing a critical role to the symphony of flavors. One of my favorite restaurants in the city.
I work only 5 blocks from here, but I hadn't made it in until my mom was in town for a visit. I think Central Kitchen does a spectacular job at balancing a beautiful modern industrial kitchen with a homey greenhouse feel. It may be hard to picture, but that is because this restaurant is delightfully unique in decor, and really stands out to me as the exact type of atmosphere I'd love to find in any restaurant I walk into. Excellent service! Our server kept a subtle eye on our table throughout the evening, and I never once had to even think about flagging him down for attention, but I also didn't feel interrupted. Highly recommend this unique dining experience!
I Had the pleasure of eating at central kitchen for the 1st time in April. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to take my husband on a 6.5 hour drive up from So Cal and bring him as an early Birthday dinner surprise. It didn't disappoint!!! The Fry bread was even better then before. Heaven in my mouth! I look forward to returning again.
We were anxious to try Central Kitchen based on favorable reviews. First the good: (1) with the exception of the waiter who described the pate as smooth when it was, in fact, country style (chunky), the service was friendly and efficient (2) chocolate dessert was a stand-out. Not so good: (1) charging for sourdough bread whose crust was soft and not being warned that it was made at least in part with whole wheat flour (2) charging for smoked butter (no un-smoked butter available) (3) no Chardonnay - and very few domestic wines - available (4) small portions not commensurate with pricing (5) my trout was not cooked all the way through; my dining companion's was. Sorry, won't be back.
Loved the food and the wine. Only disappointment was that even though this reservation was made for a special occasion - noted to the restaurant ahead of time - we were given a table that was essentially in front of the entrance. We felt a cool breeze most of the night - I kept going to close the door - which definitely put a damper on our experience. Also, the restaurant did not "check" me in for the reservation - which I really appreciate when using OpenTable.
The chocolate custard was one of the best desserts I've ever had in my life (and that is not an exaggeration). The pasta dish was also delicious. I was really really disappointed in the yellowtail crudo appetizer and my boyfriends salmon. The quality of the fish was disgusting and tasted soo fishy- fresh fish does not leave a fishy aftertaste and the yellowtail (my favorite fish) was so fishy I couldn't even finish it. Aside from the fish dishes the rest was great. Only other thing was that the beef tartare was pretty oily- but it still tasted great. The vibe of the place was awesome, as was the decor. Also to note- they don't have a full liquor license so they only make cocktails with Sherry, but they do have wine and beer
Being a sister restaurant of Flour and Water, Central Kitchen projects certain (high) standard but unfortunately was a letdown. We had 4 people and ordered a few appertizers and 5 pasta dishes, and they were all oversalted and overgreased. My squid ink fusilli was literally swimming in olive oil (there was a puddle of oil at the bottom of the bowl when finished). Other pasta dishes were lackluster with too much cream and salt. These might be a successful imitation of cheap Italian food (even found in Italy), but definitely does not make it to the delicate California cuisine. The only bright spot is their salad, which is superb. Unfortunately, everything else, was flat and salty. Too bad we will not return.
Brought my girlfriend here for her birthday. Incredible food, and considering the quality it feels like a good value. My favorite dishes were from the small plates from 'larder' and 'vegetables' sections. Everything tasted extremely fresh and the flavor combinations were very unique. Ambiance is very nice - dark, romantic and the music is well-curated (they even hand out a list of what's playing that evening). All around, a great date spot.
Every aspect of this restaurant is beautiful. The food is so visually beautiful it qualifies as art. The space is absolutely gorgeous. Ingredients are so wonderfully fresh and the pasta should not be missed! I love to bring out of town guests here to get a shining SF dining experience.
