I Had the pleasure of eating at central kitchen for the 1st time in April. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to take my husband on a 6.5 hour drive up from So Cal and bring him as an early Birthday dinner surprise. It didn't disappoint!!! The Fry bread was even better then before. Heaven in my mouth! I look forward to returning again.

We were anxious to try Central Kitchen based on favorable reviews. First the good: (1) with the exception of the waiter who described the pate as smooth when it was, in fact, country style (chunky), the service was friendly and efficient (2) chocolate dessert was a stand-out. Not so good: (1) charging for sourdough bread whose crust was soft and not being warned that it was made at least in part with whole wheat flour (2) charging for smoked butter (no un-smoked butter available) (3) no Chardonnay - and very few domestic wines - available (4) small portions not commensurate with pricing (5) my trout was not cooked all the way through; my dining companion's was. Sorry, won't be back.

Loved the food and the wine. Only disappointment was that even though this reservation was made for a special occasion - noted to the restaurant ahead of time - we were given a table that was essentially in front of the entrance. We felt a cool breeze most of the night - I kept going to close the door - which definitely put a damper on our experience. Also, the restaurant did not "check" me in for the reservation - which I really appreciate when using OpenTable.

The chocolate custard was one of the best desserts I've ever had in my life (and that is not an exaggeration). The pasta dish was also delicious. I was really really disappointed in the yellowtail crudo appetizer and my boyfriends salmon. The quality of the fish was disgusting and tasted soo fishy- fresh fish does not leave a fishy aftertaste and the yellowtail (my favorite fish) was so fishy I couldn't even finish it. Aside from the fish dishes the rest was great. Only other thing was that the beef tartare was pretty oily- but it still tasted great. The vibe of the place was awesome, as was the decor. Also to note- they don't have a full liquor license so they only make cocktails with Sherry, but they do have wine and beer

This is my second visit and food was even better than my first visit. Service very good and although, we needed to be out of the restaurant at a certain time, we did not feel rushed.

Very disappointing. Slow service. Food took a while and server forgot a side dish we ordered. We wanted to leave but entire staff was missing from the floor so we had to sit and wait even more.
Will not return or recommend.

The squid pasta with nduja is simple, soulful and glorious. I keep coming for the chocolate custard, the sourdough they bake and the fantastic service.

Being a sister restaurant of Flour and Water, Central Kitchen projects certain (high) standard but unfortunately was a letdown. We had 4 people and ordered a few appertizers and 5 pasta dishes, and they were all oversalted and overgreased. My squid ink fusilli was literally swimming in olive oil (there was a puddle of oil at the bottom of the bowl when finished). Other pasta dishes were lackluster with too much cream and salt. These might be a successful imitation of cheap Italian food (even found in Italy), but definitely does not make it to the delicate California cuisine. The only bright spot is their salad, which is superb. Unfortunately, everything else, was flat and salty. Too bad we will not return.

Brought my girlfriend here for her birthday. Incredible food, and considering the quality it feels like a good value. My favorite dishes were from the small plates from 'larder' and 'vegetables' sections. Everything tasted extremely fresh and the flavor combinations were very unique. Ambiance is very nice - dark, romantic and the music is well-curated (they even hand out a list of what's playing that evening). All around, a great date spot.

Every aspect of this restaurant is beautiful. The food is so visually beautiful it qualifies as art. The space is absolutely gorgeous. Ingredients are so wonderfully fresh and the pasta should not be missed! I love to bring out of town guests here to get a shining SF dining experience.

We left ourselves in the more than capable hands of the chef's choice. Each course was delicious, and the overall value was tremendous. Did not take the pairings but went for
a lovely Fieldworks instead. Wish CK had existed when I lived across the street 17 years
ago!

In additional comments prior to coming, I put in that I was gluten free. The server knew going in which made me feel so welcomed. Music playlist was a good range and picked up as the energy picked up. It is expensive, but you pay for well thought out farm to table cuisine and feel good eating the food knowing they are forward-thinking with minimizing waste of the animals. Fermented vegetables are amazing and the creativity is insane! My sister just became a server there and loves the standard that is held in great service and being apart of a loving staff family. One of best restaurants in SF and I hope to come on a date someday. Also there are high ceilings, fresh air and greenery everywhere. Ambiance is contemporary yet alive.

We had a really nice meal here. The food was delicious, but I thought the portions were small for both "eating family style" as suggested and for the price. But everything we had was delicious.

Took my boyfriend out to celebrate a promotion. Great food, friendly service. It was the night of the crazy thunder storms and the staff and guests were chatty, experiencing it together. It's almost like sitting outside (under a skylight) which made it that much cooler. Burrata and roasted garlic starter with flatbread was the perfect mix of flavors. Our pasta dishes were perfectly prepared. We will definitely go back to this neighborhood favorite.

Went Labor Day weekend for our wedding anniversary. I had told them in advance that it was our anniversary and had requested a quiet table . . . we actually ended up in the middle of the restaurant at a pretty noisy table.

Our server was nice but appeared to have the entire outdoor area as his section and had 6-7 tables (a couple of them larger tables--more than 4-tops) at a time. This was too many tables. There was always a long wait (several minutes to be greeted, 15 minutes for our glasses of wine after we had ordered them, and a long wait to order food--he said he would be back "in a minute" to take our order but it was more like 20), and over our five courses he never once came back to check on how the food was or how the wine was.

Also, no one ever mentioned our anniversary or did anything. I am not expecting free food or anything, but it would have been nice of them to acknowledge our special occasion in some way, since I did tell them in advance. This was very disappointing as it was supposed to be a special (and rare) night out for us.

However, the food was EXCELLENT. Tomato bread salad was perfect--although it was advertised with pole beans, and there were zero beans on that dish. Charred squash with yogurt was also yummy, but could have used more of the yogurt sauce. Squid ink fusilli and pork with vadouvan were also very good. The chocolate custard dessert was wonderfully balanced, not too sweet . . . I wanted to order another. Wine choices were ok--the Malbec blend was not very Bordeaux-like as advertised. The Mencia was a nice big red.

Overall, I am torn . . . I loved the food across the board; the tomato salad and chocolate custard being real standouts . . . but it really took something away from our anniversary experience to be at a noisy table in the middle of the room with such slow service.

Food was creative and very tasty - service was not at the same standard. We chose the Chef's Choice menu, and the timing of course delivery was a bit off. It also took quite a while before a server came to our table once we were seated.

Wonderful, creative food. Stands out in a crowded field. Food prices exactly right. Wine list is excellent and imaginative, but ridiculously marked up, especially considering the neighborhood. Server did not seem to enjoy talking to people and was annoyed at questions, but was knowledgeable.

Decor was gorgeous and the food was wonderful. The only thing that left me a little bit uncomfortable is that the service seems slightly aloof and lacking warmth. I got this strange feeling that I was supposed to be impressed with the hipness of the staff.

Do yourself a favor and go with someone (or multiple people) who don't mind sharing! The entire menu is best experienced family style.

Everything was delicious from the appetizers to the main dishes. There wasn't anything we did not like.

My ONLY qualm is that the restaurant shares bathrooms with a pretty rowdy bar next door. Otherwise, zero complaints.
