Cedar was a wonderful restaurant for my date and myself. They were very accommodating for a special request that I had of them. They had a varied menu. Food was delicious, service was prompt and sweet, and yet also detached and let my date and I enjoy our time together. My date is a vegan and so bringing her here she said there was plenty on the menu that she could enjoy, and that the food was delicious for her. I admit, tasting the vegan ravioli was like eating real ravioli. I had the pheasant and I couldn't have been happier either.
Thank you Cedar for a great night!
Very well done. Nice decor, quiet environment, great food and great service. Very pleasant.
We went to Cedar because it was within walking distance to the Capital One Arena. The service was a bit slow and it took quite a while for someone to take our drink order and bring us the delicious complimentary bread. My entree, the Sweet Potato and Rutabaga Gratin, tasted burned but the quinoa was delicious. On the plus side, the lamb was the best I've ever tasted.
We really enjoyed the food here very delicious and generous portions. Service was great and very friendly.
We had a group of 8 for brunch after the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler race and were running quite late for our reservation. I called to let them know, and the host was very gracious and made sure to put us at ease as we made our way over! Once we arrived, service was quick (though a little scattered at first with our large group), the food was delicious and didn't take long to arrive, and overall we had a great brunch experience.
Good service and nice people
Excellent food ,friendly staff and good location in this hidden gem in downtown DC
Restaurant is close to the Shakespeare theater, so we made a dinner reservation for Cedar at 6:15 p.m. Glad we did because the place was packed, but we got in immediately!
Cedar's website says to allow 60 minutes for their pre-theater/pre-fixe 3-course meal, however, we were hard-pressed to finish in that amount of time. The food was delicious; I ordered the beet salad appetizer; pork tenderloin, and crème brulee for dessert.
Wait service was attentive and friendly, but the timing of the courses was erratic. Drinks and appetizer were served promptly, but main course took a very long time. Ended up having to rush through dessert and ask for the check to make it to the theater by our 7:30 p.m. curtain time.
Enjoyed the atmosphere and ambiance of this restaurant. I would come back, but would allow at least 90 minutes for the pre-theater meal, especially on a Friday night.
The food was excellent; fresh tasting and in creative combinations. The beet salad was beautiful in presentation. The haddock was cooked to perfection, moist and well seasoned. The espresso creme brulee was delightful.
We went before the theatre and were very pleased and will go again.
Honestly I was disappointed. We had reservations, and I was pleasantly surprised to be sat at a bar table while our dinner table was readied. Unfortunately it all went downhill from there... It took 20 minutes to receive water, another 20 for a drink, and by the time we received the complimentary bread our total time was at almost an hour. We didn't leave because a friend recommended the food, and I was looking forward to their unique dishes. The risotto balls are delicious, but everything else we had was over-salted, overcooked, or just mediocre. When serving elk, pheasant, and boar, I expect care to go into knowing how the ingredients may best be presented. Perhaps the kitchen and serving staff were all having an off night, I get that it happens. It is just so disappointing to know that I would have ordered a bottle of wine if allowed, as well as several small dishes, and wasn't even given the opportunity to order more than two small (but admittedly tasty) cocktails. The cherry on top was how dramatically our sever's attitude shifted once we declined the dessert menu. From friendly to brusque in a moment.
The happy hour looked lively and in retrospect I wish we had just sat at the bar. I will certainly not be returning for dinner.
This was a convenient location, and had vegan options which was important to my guest. Food is good and there are many healthy choices. It is quiet and reasonably priced. Service was attentive.
It’s ok. Not really a place to go if you want dazzle visiting guests. I read they offered vegan dishes, which they do. But cross contamination can become an issue for those with extreme dietary restrictions. The food took quite a while to be brought out even though they weren’t busy. The server although kind spirited, didn’t seem to well versed in the menu. Even as she joyfully encouraged items that were not very satisfying.
Love the menu, it was very diverse. Friendly staff, great food.
Nice place for dinner. Pretty loud when we were there, with lots of folks at the bar. Food is very good, and the service is attentive (and they are very helpful with diners with food allergies or special requests). However, one area of improvement would be with the sides that accompany the main dishes--they are not very imaginative, almost afterthoughts. They need to work on the quality of the whole entree, not just the feature item.
The bartender is far more inspired than the chef. The food was decent, but not for the price point.
Super fantastic evening before the show at the Ford theatre
I think the restaurant is good. Limited seating not a lot of tables during construction. It could be more lit up but it is a basement location...
The food is good, the service was good. I guess due to the limited seating also allows for less waiters or waitress.
We really enjoyed this place. They have a vegan menu that was wonderful!! We have the soup of the day and the Beet salad the tempeh dish, the grilled tofu and two desserts. Everything was so delicious and beautifully prepared.
Can’t wait to go back!
Nice little restaurant with vegan options also. Would return for sure.
My Mom is in wheelchair and they greeted her and brought her down the elevator. The service was magnificent. The food was outstanding. I cannot say enough about Cedar Restaurant. Cannot wait to go back.
Excellent service and food. Decor a little drab.
I wouldn't revisit Cedar Restaurant after experiencing the poor service during a mediocre, though affordable brunch. Given Chinatown/Penn Quarter's competitive location, there are too many other options to consider for better experiences. I ordered grits and a side of venison sausage, but the grits and sausage - while fairly enjoyable in presentation and flavors - arrived lukewarm and only after two separate jumbled attempts to introduce standard menu items. Our table was served by four very uncoordinated staff members (the host, two servers, and a buser). The poor service culminated when our server dropped six dishes in an epic clatter. Mistakes happen of course, but clearly the staff bears improvements that a restaurant of Cedar's age would not need. I don't regret having tried Cedar Restaurant, but with so many brunch options nearby, it is hard to justify giving Cedar another shot based on my recent and likely only experience.
Great restaurant-nice food including a bunch of vegan options, and the service truly couldn’t be better. Lauren our server was awesome and the manager, whose name I didn’t get, is just the nicest guy! Highly recommend.
great choice in Penn Quarter - we were surprised by the how bright and airy the dining room is, considering it is lower level.
service was wonderful and informative. food quality is terrific - fresh, well prepare and reasonable portions. and fairly priced.
can't wait to return and try more of the menu
Wonderful!!! Recommend by a friend, without any hype, just said if you like good food try this place. Beyond expectations, food, service, hospitality at a different level of GOOD, I would recommend and come back
The food is absolutely delicious! Our server, Lauren was wonderful! Definitely recommend this restaurant!
Very good and authentic Lebanese cuisine.
From A to Z it was awesome! Service with a smile and food that was out of this world.
We were there for Saturday brunch before the Shakespeare theatre. Attractive menu, good service, brunch of banana French toast for my wife and mushroom omelette for me. It had music playing of French and Latin American songs with some jazz riffs. Convivial and relaxing. We are very pleased to find such a nice play so close to the theatre.
We come to Cedars before plays at the Landsburg Theater. The three-course pre-theater dinner is always wonderful.
We were there on a Monday night and had the place practically to ourselves. What impressed us most was how it suited our special needs. In our party of four we had a person with a vegan diet, gluten-free diet, and two pescatarians/vegetarians. The prix-fixe menu was a good deal. I would recommend leaving the bacon out of the butternut squash soup. That would allow the vegetarians to eat it too.
The food was excellent but the service could use some work. We were a big group, with one baby in a stroller. No one was that eager to help get us and the baby situated (very quiet baby) (carrying stroller down the stairs). Once seated, we did not get menus for quite a while and generally were not really checked on throughout brunch.
Nice menu and food was very, very good....smoked salmon appetizer split at table and a salad for one. Two of us chose the bouillabaisse which was a special and the third member at our table had the bison short ribs. All of the food was delicious, including the bread/olive oil served with the meal. The only shortcoming was that our drinks (2 martinis and a wine) did not arrive until the appetizer was on the table....and our bottle of wine for dinner was also brought then. A timing issue that probably doesn't happen often but we felt rushed with our drinks. We would definitely go again.
Cozy, pleasant discreet location in a busy area. Attention by the staff and waitress was exceptional. The pre-theater menu offered good selections and delicious food.
A quiet night at Cedar was just what the doctor ordered! This friendly basement location is sometimes hopping but this Wednesday night was subdued and we had classic meals (lamb and tenderloin) at the bar prepared exactly to order with sauces and vegetables matched perfectly. Bartender Sean poured a wonderful glass of Cabernet for dinner and whipped up a delicious cappuccino and a well crafted cocktail after dinner. The bread deserves separate mention as the best in town! Serious conversation between us and among others at the bar was stimulating and a welcome change from the yelling required at other venues. A perfect evening! Highly recommended!
Great vegan options, super service.
Very nice restaurant, the staff was very attentive, our food was tasty and creative.
Had a great Valentines Day dinner. Girlfriend is Vegan/Gluten-Free and she was still able to have options (hard to find). Good food and nice people.
