Cedar Restaurant is Located in the heart of Penn Quarter
in downtown DC within walking distance of many attractions.
We are surrounded by many great theaters including Shakespeare Theaters, National Theater, Woolly Mammoth , Ford's Theater and also E street Cinema.
Sean makes a great cocktail and the service is always good. Food was excellent. They took away the table clothes. Bad move in my opinion.
A beautiful, quiet, and relaxing atmosphere. Food was absolutely delicious.
Despite an unpromising start -- down a very long flight of stairs, to a completely empty dining room, where we were seated in lonely splendor at the opposite end from a small, lively bar, with only the bartender to wait on us -- we had a LOVELY meal. The food we ate was excellent! The pre-theater prix fixe included a fine salad, a delicious bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin (among three choices) and a nifty coffee crème brulée. The à la carte appetizer menu included a delicious brie en croute and a fine smoked salmon on a bed of fresh, crisp greens. Half the menu is vegan, so there is something for everyone. The service, while a little sketchy owing to a staff absence, was very friendly. The restaurant will be opening a street-level room in the near future. That will make our planned return trip even easier.
This is our special date night spot. Love the vegan menu! The caeser salad and vegan meatloaf are incredible. Great service, great atmosphere. We love Cedar.
Okay food and outdated ambiance. Not worth it at this price point.
This was our second visit to Cedar; the first did not impress us and we complained to the manager. To remedy the issue, he gave us a gift card, explained his improvement strategy, and asked us to give Cedar another try. So this visit was to honor his request. Sadly, the issues we encountered the first time are largely unresolved. The waitress was pleasant and the food was ok, but we really did not enjoy having to sit at the bar for 20 minutes when there were plenty of open tables just because we arrived earlier than our reservation time. The servings are still pretentious and expensive and I was appalled by the $8.00 cheesecake tartlet! We are obviously not their clientele and have no intention of returning. Unlike in baseball, with me it’s two strikes and you’re out! I cannot recommend Cedar unless you are more interested in outward appearances than good, we’ll priced food.
Everything was great. I would highly recommend this to my friends. We had three different specials and each one was fabulous!
Great food! Great Location, A bit dark but romantic
Although the restaurant is renovating and expanding, it was a great first visit. Thare is a long staircase going down to the restaurant, but the host was very accommodating in taking us to an elevator that was accessible. Drinks were excellent, the brie appetizer is amazing, and dinner was outstanding. It is a small menue, but all items look creative and worth trying. Service could not have been better. We will be back for sure, especially when attending events near Penn Quarter.
Excellent service and outstanding food for a great price. Go here if you want to impress someone!
Awesome experience.. Perfect for important events. The staff absolutely made our anniversary very special. I haven't been here for years and I'm very glad they are still around and expanding. It was as good as I remembered it the first time we were here. Kudos to the management and the staff.
Perfect. I love that you have vegan choices.
It took longer than expected for our food but the food and drinks were really good. A few hiccups but not enough to say i wouldnt come back.
Crab cake Benedict was delicious! Variety of good options on menu. Server was not as informed about the menu or the restaurant week menu as my table would have liked. He was nice though.
Good food - solid 7/10. The service was top-notch - but maybe because we were the only people at the restaurant! During the 2+ hours we were there, only one other couple came in. Very quiet, nice atmosphere.
This restaurant is my go to for dates because the food is excellent, its affordable (by DC standards) and it’s quiet enough to talk.
In general, across various dishes, the food was overcooked. I had the pork tenderloin and it was dry and oily (?). The lamb was a major disappointment.
Date night at Cedar on a Monday. Nice time, but not sure if I would return again as there are other American restaurants in the DC area that are vegan-friendly (which is a large reason why I chose the place)
Pros: Restaurant with American cuisine and friendly staff. It was easy to make reservations. The food was tasty and well-prepared. Overall, the restaurant was quiet and had a pleasant ambiance. And lots of vegan options on the menu.
Cons: Multiple items that I wanted (mocktail and vegan mille feuille) were unavailable. I find that weird because the restaurant wasn't very busy the evening I went. I liked the privacy and space they gave me and my date, but I was a little frustrated by how slow the service seemed to be.
Fabulous vegan options and customer service was amazing.
Great American food, and one of the quietest places for a meal near the Verizon Center.
The restaurant is going through renovations while they renew their liquor license. We went because it was on the list for restaurants with a remarkable wine list. That was not the case, the wine list was severely limited and not remarkable at all--
Food choices also severely limited and even though we were given the pre theater menus, we were told they were not offering those choices. Why give it to us then??
We were only one of three tables filled and yet, the waiter was rushing us out the door. I won't be in a hurry to go back
Went for Father’s Day. There seemed to only be the host and bartender serving the guests. While there were only about 6 parties in the restaurant, food took over an hour to come out. We had to make sure we put in all orders (including drinks) at one time because you never knew when the server would come back. At one point, we looked around and NONE of the parties had any food on their table. Good food, but not worth the service.
Oor group of 5 was seated in a private room just off the entry which moderated the noise and allowed easy conversation. We enjoyed two each of the delicious appetizers, which was perfect to get us to our play on time.
Food was fantastic, staff were very pleasant and helpful. Too bad I am only visiting in Orlando otherwise I would be a regular here!
The fish and pasta dish was super fresh and well prepared. Beautiful large piece of fish and home made squid ink pasta— not at all sticky or flooded with sauce. Perfect. Service seemed short staffed. But there was a large party in a relatively small dining room with only one wait person who was also tending the bar. Still, he was attentive when he caught our eye and we needed something. I’d definitely go back and would recommend it!
This restaurant is a favorite of my wife's and mine when we venture into DC for a night out. We often go for the prefix, pre-theatre menu selections, as they're a good value and usually quickly prepared. And I often go for the bartender's choice cocktail, which is almost always some interesting and artistically prepared concoction. Our visit this time did not disappoint: great food and outstanding service.
As always Cedar never disappoints. Delicious food, fun cocktails, flawless service. One of my favorite restaurants in DC. And if you want to have a quiet conversation while you dine, Cedar is the perfect choice!
I love this Cedar! It's great for 2 and just as wonderful for a large group. There are plenty of delicious offerings that will accommodate any special diet. The waitstaff is kind and attentive and definitely up for the challenge if you have picky eaters in your party. They're great with kids too!
We celebrated my daughter's graduation from George Washington University on Sunday May 19th. Since my daughter is a vegan, this restaurant was able top please us all for this exciting time - outstanding vegan selections for brunch and dessert while the rest of us had delicious choices of "carnivore" options. The service was impeccable as well! Will definitely go back at our next visit to DC!
The restaurant was under construction, so all tables were in the basement bar. It wasn't an inviting atmosphere. The food and service were both good but there was a fire alarm 3/4 of the way through dinner, right after a bottle of wine had been opened. Had to beg to get management to provide a discount. I don't like when managers aren't empowered to do anything about a negative guest experience. I don't think I'll be back.
Delicious brunch on Mother’s Day. Loved the vegan options on the menu. The vegan Caesar with smoked tempeh was amazing
Fixed price, pre-theatre dining for three adults. Food was mediocre at best. Very noisy because of a small bar crowd. Service was okay. Was surprised that the restaurant is in a basement.
Food was very good. Our server was great. But in a basement, lights on high, tired decor. We had a good time and good food but wouldn’t go out of my way to go back. Solid but not special.
This review is just for our recent visit. Unfortunately there was a reserved group meeting in the bar area that spilled over into the tiny area of the dining room. Very loud. Service was slower than usual. They ran out of one of the desserts that we both ordered. The manager came over to apologize about the noise and the dessert which was very nice. It would've been even nicer if he threw in the cost of one dessert ($8 - not a big deal to them cost wise, but would've gone far PR-wise). The food was absolutely delicious so I'd definitely go back. Good deal pre theater too.
Cedar is a gem. We went for their VegWeek special, and tribute to Rena Roseman, who motivated Cedar to start this program back in 2012. Cedar now has both a full vegan menu and a full meat-eaters menu 100% of the time, which is fantastic...something for everyone. The manager Mikias and our server could not have been more welcoming and pleasant; the food was superb (I had a wonderful chick pea stew and a tasty and smokey Caesar salad); the ambiance is calming and comfortable; and the wine list was diverse and satisfying. And the prices are totally reasonable! Go to the "star chef" places if you like, but you should also have Cedar on your list, whether you plan to be in the Penn Quarter area, or for a special trip.
A lovely place to celebrate a big birthday before heading over to catch the hockey playoffs. The food was delicious as always, the service warm and quick to fulfill our requests.
Thanks for the delicious vegan options. Felt so inclusive for everyone with a great atmosphere.
What an amazing find! Very good food, delightful friendly yet proper service, in a great location. They provided a very nice little surprise after learning it was my wife's birthday the day before. It was very quiet the night we were there, which we thought was great, so more people need to enjoy this great restaurant.
Excellent gem of a place tucked away near Ford's Theater. You walk several flights down to a warm & friendly bar & dining area. Especially nice that there are options for vegans which are creative, making use of grains & sauces to add to tofu & tempeh to result in flavorful & tasty offerings. We are not vegan, but we tried that menu along with some seafood. Additionally the wines are carefully selected & reflect some creative offerings. Definitely will return.
