Cedar Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Our first visit to Cedar was fantastic! Great food; impeccable service. We returned for my daughter's graduation and the food was still good. But, the service was so poor it impacted our entire dining experience. Our reservation was at 8PM, seated at 7:45. We had to keep asking to be served. The waitress couldn't remember the specials. We placed our order and waited and waited. We waited more than an hour between making our order and being served. The restaurant wasn't busy, making it unclear why we couldn't be served. My daughter, a vegan, was especially interested in the vegan chocolate mousse and vegan vanilla for dessert. This dessert was largely the reason why we came. (Otherwise, we would have went elsewhere for dessert). We ordered it and two dishes of ice cream and waited another 45 minutes for these three things to be served. While we were interested in a celebratory leisurely dinner, this was too slow and the waitress was inattentive. The slow service and the constant need to chase down our waitress overshadowed the excellent food.
We came here for our anniversary and I was quite pleased with our experience. The setting is intimate with soft lighting and while the total seating area is surprisingly small, this establishment seems to be known only by the local crowd and therefore is not cramped or crowded. The wait staff was very attentive and courteous, present but not overbearing. Our drinks were delicious and arrived very quickly. The food was very good - the mushroom soup was creamy but not heavy, the beef short rib was tender and juicy, cooked as requested, and had a delicioud sauce on it. The rack of lamb was equally lovely, and both the beef and lamb came with wonderful sides that complemented each dish. Overall, it was a very good experience and we will be back.
The Cedar menu had a variety of options that suited my group's dining desires. Upon entry into the restaurant we were not sure if we were in the right spot, as the reception and dining are down a set of curved stairs. We had a nice greeting and our table for 7 was ready upon our arrival. Seating areas are segregated which helps to have some privacy among diners. Servers were nice and timely. Everyone enjoyed the meal; although the mushroom Cassoulet wasn't a Cassoulet, but was still a tasty dish. I recommend and would return to Cedar.
First time guests. Enjoyed the pre-theatre menu very much - wide range of choices. Welcome person and table server were quite friendly and helpful. Waiter chatted with us happily about future plans for the restaurant, which were very appealing, so we'll be sure to come back. All was very good and fine. Nothing negative at all. I especially enjoyed the generous Sazerac cocktail!
Great service and great food. This restaurant usually has very good ambience however that evening there was a large party that was very noisy. Yelling, talking loud, singing happy birthday. The waiter did a great job of moving us to a table a little further away.
We loved this restaurant. The food was really original and tasty. Our waitress was very nice and gave us really good suggestions. Ambiance was excellent, not very loud and nice decoration.
We ordered as appetizers the soup of the day (leek and parsnip) and the oven baked brie; as entrees the Roasted duck, the Lamb and the Sweet Potato and Rutabaga Gratin; creme brulee as dessert. The soup, rutabaga and the dessert were part of the pre-theater 3 course menu, which was an excellent deal. The entrees and appetizers were delicious; the dessert was ok.
We will definitely visit again next time we're in D.C.
I appreciate the vegan menu and good vegetarian options. I also think the pre-theater menu is a good deal. I was not 'wowed' by the food - it was good but not great. Our server was great and she made the experience worth it. The atmosphere was a little less than desirable, although that could be because we were seated on the lower level with a view of the (fairly tacky) divider beteeen the dining room and the entrance. The upper level appeared to have been a private party. Overall, I would recommend the restaurant for someone wanting to get dinner before seeing a show - especially if they're vegetarian and want more than one choice on the menu.
We always enjoy a dinner at Cedar. We usually go pre-theatre, and the staff are so helpful to keep everything on time. The food is great, as is the service. And it's quiet enough to have a nice conversation, so it's also relaxing. A great refuge from the hubub of Penn Quarter.
A real gem, centrally located in the heart of DC's Penn Quarter and close to theaters, with reasonably priced new American cuisine and great service. The pre-theater 3-course menu is an outstanding bargain, and even though we had less than an hour to show time, our server made sure we enjoyed each course and made it to the theater on time. Kudos to her and to the chef!
The dinner was a mini family reunion and Cedar was a fantastic choice. Our party of 8 was seated in a private area, which wasn't requested, but was perfect for our needs. The staff offered to turn down the music in our area, which again wasn't requested, but was so helpful in allowing us to hear each other. Service was impeccable and our waitress was very helpful and patient with a bunch of people who kept changing orders, had a lot of questions, basically spent the entire time chatting instead of listening to her and then asked her to take our picture on multiple phones. All of that and the food was fantastic!
Food was great, tasty and just the right sized portions (not too huge)! But the service was above and beyond. When we arrived the server asked if we had theater plans (no) and said she'd pace our meal more slowly so we could talk. Not long into the meal, she got slammed with a huge group of people and took the time to come over and explain that other staff would be helping her with our table for that reason. They were all terrific, items served at just the right time and water glasses kept filled. We greatly appreciated how seemlessly the staff adjusted and how pleasant a dinner they made for us.
Perfect place for pre Ford Theater production. They have a wonderful pre-theater menu and a vegan menu (perfect for my daughter)
They know how to serve a lovely meal and get you in and out without feeling rushed and make it to the theater in plenty of time.
Excellent red snapper special and the beet salad is excellent- so often beer salads are over powered with too much goat cheese- this was perfection! We will definitely return!
They forgot to bring us items, we waited 30+ minutes for our entrees, and when we got the entrees the portions were laughable. Boar chops with seasonable vegetables where the chops were half the size of a normal pork chop and half a Brussel sprout with a small carrot strip. For $28!
