Cedar Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We enjoyed the wild boar chops and beet salad. Flavors were great-the sauce on the wild boar was deliciously sweet & spicy. Wine was very good - we received tastes so we ended up with something we would definitely like. Service was friendly and attentive. Nice find.
Small restaurant in basement on E street between 8th and 9th. Quiet with good food for brunch. Fried oysters are fresh and tasty with very light breading. These are featured in both fried oyster sandwich and Hangtown Fry (fried oysters with scrambled eggs and bacon). Portions were adequate -- not large but not tiny; chicken and waffle came as three small waffles with a piece of fried chicken on each. Also tried the wild game sausages (pheasant, boar & elk), which came with a mustard sampler and bread. Sausages had good taste and texture. The butternut squash soup was a bit thinner and less creamy than expected, but it still had good flavor. The only down note was dessert. The recommended creme brûlée was out by the time we ordered, and the chocolate layer cake was dry and stale. To their credit, the cake price was removed from bill when we sent it back.
I went with two friends from NYC, hoping to catch up with them at a restaurant that had really good food and was not too loud. We went on the evening after New Years Eve, and all agreed that Cedar filled the bill. I had eaten there before and found the food to be really good. I did have some concern about the noise level possibly being higher than I would prefer -- especially if there were lots of people in the bar -- because being able to comfortably have a conversation is important to me. The evening could not have turned out better. Because the food was so interesting and exceptional, we all sampled each others' dishes and shared a dessert. The staff, including our server, Lauren, performed superbly. And we were able to enjoy our conversation, something that can be too rare in DC restaurants. I look forward to returning to Cedar soon.
Lovely restaurant that is below street level. Reminds me of an old speak easy. Food was excellent and well presented. The three course pre-Theatre menu was filling. Delicious and fairly healthy. Handmade cocktails are available. The wine list is limited but the wines available are quite good.
This restaurant is wonderful! My wife and I went before a show at the national theater. We arrived late (and stressed) from weather-related traffic and Cedar was just what we needed. They couldn’t have been better to us! The service was easygoing and friendly, drinks were fantastic (and much appreciated), and the food was phenomenal. We left in great spirits and in perfect time for the show. I can’t wait to go back!
The food is delicious and beautifully presented. I was in a group of 5 going to Ford's Theatre for a 7:30 p.m. performance. I mentioned this at the time I made the reservation and when ordering. The service was smooth and attentive until the main course was over. Then there was an unexplained delay before dessert was served (we picked dessert when we ordered). Despite two queries, dessert only arrived in time to gobble it down, pay the bill, get coats and dash two and half (long) blocks to the theater. Don't know what happened with dessert. Otherwise, our group enjoyed this restaurant.
I will definitely be back! We came here before seeing A Christmas Carol at Ford's Theatre. They have a pre-theater dinner option, which is 3 courses for $35. An amazing value with delicious food. I got soup, steak, and cheesecake all perfectly portioned, and all fantastic. It was very quiet when we arrived at 5:30, but got busier around 6-6:30. The staff was wonderful - attentive and helpful. I would absolutely recommend!
The food is always top notch as well as the atmosphere and service. I had the rack of lamb as part of the pre-theatre menu and it was prepared perfectly. I was happy to learn that Cedar will be re-opening for lunch. They are expanding upstairs, but still keeping the lower level dining area which has a wonderful atmosphere. Excellent job Mikias and the enter Cedar team for making this a special dining experience.
We enjoyed the pre=theater 3-course menu - a good value at $35 per person. Cedar Restaurant is below ground level, so be aware that you will be walking down a set of stairs from the street entrance. That said, they've done a nice job with the decor, so you don't feel like you're dining in a converted basement. The food was excellent but our only criticism is that service was slower than it should have been for the pre-theater crowd, particularly the time it took for the first course to arrive. We had to ask for the check with dessert and rushed to our show, barely making it for curtain time.
our family includes a vegetarian AND some serious meat eaters. The vegetarian was well-fed by a full vegan menu and the serious meat eaters were happy with the beef tenderloin. Other good choices were the crab cake side - a a great first course 2 crab cakes ready for sharing the lobster in butter also a close to main amount first course. And delicious as well. Also recommend the wild mushroom casserole. All in all a high quality meal. We will definitely return - at Christmas when our our family will be back in town.
The food at Cedar is always excellent, and that was the case on Thanksgiving. The service at Cedar is sometimes spotty, and that was the case on Thanksgiving. Pairings weren't always served together, and I was told gluten-free bread was available, an order had been put in for it, and then it never arrived. Small frustrations, but frustrations none the less.
The frittata was very different than expected. The Burger and Steak was absolutely great. The waitress acted like she was having a bad day. She was unfriendly. It seemed she was having the worse day of her life. She didn't check on us. Didn't provide a status of our order. Did not say goodbye. The other two waiters were assisting her and they were very nice and considerate. They provided the status of order and brought it out.
Great pre-fixe pre-theater offering. If you are a member of the Shakespeare Theatre Bard Card, you can get select discounts on parking , wine, or specialty drinks too. Fantastic server (Lauren); outstanding chefs; interesting drinks from Sean the bartender. Nice vegetarian options. All around perfect.
It had been close to two years since my friend and I last dined at Cedar. The menu is limited, but very interesting. My friend had an appetizer neither of us seen before: a petite lobster tail. It was served with parsnip puree & sautéed kale in a cider reduction. For her entrée, my friend had pan-seared rockfish served over orzo in a light lemon sauce with grilled baby root veggies. For my appetizer, I had brie baked in fuille de brick and served with fig jam, roasted pecans and toasted brioche crostini. I then had beef tenderloin with baby root veggies and roasted purple potatoes & onion in an awaze sauce. We finished with espresso crème brûlée served on an almond cake. It was all delicious! One thing we thoroughly enjoy about places like Cedar is the servers know how to be attentive without hovering so allowing us to savor the evening.
Went for a birthday dinner date for 2 vegans (honey's okay). We both have decent appetites and left the restaurant a bit hungry. we had the grilled tofu, the chicken fettuccini and for dessert the almond pecan blueberry tarte with vegan vanilla ice cream. The tofu was a bit too vinegary for our taste and the portions of everything were just not filling. Would not order the tofu again but the fetuccini was decent. For the prices charged, there wasn't enough food on the plates. That said, the birthday dessert (they substituted a non-alcoholic drink in place of the regular champagne/wine)and singing were nice and the ambiance was as well. This is a place to try once and I wanted to try the other vegan dishes but probably won't based on this experience. Our server was good, the bread was vegan, and several managers dropped by to check in on us during the meal.
Everything was great. Gracious hostess. Lauren recommended the daily soup--butternut squash and the fish of the day--rockfish. The soup was excellent, the fish was light and moist and the accompanying vegetables were terrific. Cozy relaxed atmosphere makes you feel like you could be anywhere in the world.
Another great dining experience. We ordered from the vegan menu and everything was phenomenal (cauliflower/broccoli soup, Caesar salad, ravioli, and linguine). The manager/owner came to our table to greet us and make sure we enjoyed our meal. A hidden gem in DC and one of my favorites.
